Rakdos, the Showstopper Discussion

Ravnica Allegiance was great for clan Rakdos! Time to make some changes..

Flexibility is king in Commander. Blow up anything that Rakdos can blow up!

2 cards for one mana? Yes please! Also, Torgaar is a bit of an awkward card. Typically, we've done a huge amount of damage by the time we cast this (presumably with discount from Rakdos's ability). So it turns out to be "win more" most of the time.

Damage to summon the king. Vial Smasher was also awkward because we typically don't want to cast spells before getting our mana discount. And by himself, he probably won't help us get any damage.

A wrath for only 2 mana that conveniently won't destroy our commander. And let's face it, the variance on this card is what makes it both memorable and so Rakdos! Also, remember that you don't have to play it just because it's in your hand. If you're winning, keep winning...

Damage to summon the king. 4 mana spent to get an 18 (EIGHTEEN) mana discount!

Damage to summon the king. The Spawn alone can get us a 7 mana discount!

Those are all great suggestions triproberts12. I was aware that Rakdos, the Showstopper does not interact with Chance Encounter , and instead am using it as a pseudo-boardwipe with a big upside (6/6/ flying trample). The splash for black was for the tutors more than anything else, but you have a good list to supplement there as well. I chose not to go with Zndrsplt and Okaum as the commanders because I felt together they would be too over costed for the deck (as commanders go) and not come down early enough to impact the game - instead Vial Smasher the Fierce helps put pressure on our opponents while we are casting our spells that allows us to flip coins and Kraum, Ludevic's Opus nets us 5 damage to opponent plus an additional 4 in the same turn. I will definitely consider some changes though to the tutor package.

What about Rakdos the Defiler and Rakdos, the Showstopper ? They are pretty decent demons, and fit the theme of demon tribal very well. Lord of the Void is just a blast to play as well, and Demon of Wailing Agonies can be good if played well.

Deck looks pretty cool!

Actually, I'm guessing it's Rakdos, the Showstopper that prompted the black splash. You might already know, but, in case you don't, since it's a common misconception, Rakdos doesn't work with Chance Encounter , since you never "win" a coin flip, having never called heads or tails. The tutors are nice to have, as well, but I would personally use Muddle the Mixture and Whir of Invention to grab Krark's Thumb and chain Mystical Tutor , Personal Tutor , or Dizzy Spell into Gamble . Long-Term Plans is also pretty easy to set up when you're drawing like crazy with Zndersplt.

Thanks :) very interesting idea, and I understand what the demon is for. If I get it right, bitter ordeal doesn't do that much for you now as gravestorm counts permanents, not permanent card. I think you got some ideas on how to get the combo going, but how about some recurrable lands to still be able to cast something after the demon trigger? Oh, and I feel like Rakdos, the Showstopper could do a similar thing for you if you were to splash red.

Updates for Ravnica Allegiance! But first:

It's unfortunately become necessary to implement some changes to increase the quality of discussion on this page, which has been rife with personal attacks and uncharitable debate. We've banned the most egregious offenders from posting here, and have sent warnings to others that need a reminder to keep discussion high-quality and civil.

Making it very clear: personal attacks will not be tolerated. Treat others' opinions with charity. Treat your own opinion with humility.

Overall, a lot of the card analysis (often especially from confident posters) is often misguided or inaccurate, so please take what you read in the comment section with a grain of salt. Apologies to anyone negatively impacted by other commenters; please get in touch with the maintainers of the list if you have further concerns.

Changes: (Remember - these are early placements and may change with more development)

Judith, the Scourge Diva added to Mid Power

Lavinia, Azorius Renegade added to High Power

Nikya of the Old Ways added to Mid Power

Prime Speaker Vannifar added to High Power (*)

Rakdos, the Showstopper added to Mid Power

Teysa Karlov added to Mid Power

The Haunt of Hightower added to Mid Power

Zegana, Utopian Speaker added to Mid Power

Xantcha, Sleeper Agent moved to High Power, with plans to evaluate potential placement into Competitive.

Xantcha Combo-Control

Commander / EDH mmcgeach

Yeva, Nature's Herald moved to High Power.

Yeva Draw-Grow Combo

Commander / EDH Inkmoth_

(*) A note on Vannifar: Vannifar has caused a lot of excitement in the Competitive community, but the decklists and lines that have emerged so far seem to be below the threshold we would be comfortable considering Competitive. We plan to keep a close eye on this high-potential commander and will move it to Competitive if and when a suitable decklist has emerged.
