Rakdos, the Showstopper Discussion

thegigibeast on Commanders by Power Level [EDH Tier List]

Updates for Ravnica Allegiance! But first:

It's unfortunately become necessary to implement some changes to increase the quality of discussion on this page, which has been rife with personal attacks and uncharitable debate. We've banned the most egregious offenders from posting here, and have sent warnings to others that need a reminder to keep discussion high-quality and civil.

Making it very clear: personal attacks will not be tolerated. Treat others' opinions with charity. Treat your own opinion with humility.

Overall, a lot of the card analysis (often especially from confident posters) is often misguided or inaccurate, so please take what you read in the comment section with a grain of salt. Apologies to anyone negatively impacted by other commenters; please get in touch with the maintainers of the list if you have further concerns.

Changes: (Remember - these are early placements and may change with more development)

(*) A note on Vannifar: Vannifar has caused a lot of excitement in the Competitive community, but the decklists and lines that have emerged so far seem to be below the threshold we would be comfortable considering Competitive. We plan to keep a close eye on this high-potential commander and will move it to Competitive if and when a suitable decklist has emerged.

I called my LGS the day after the set was fully spoiled to preregister... Gruul was already sold out. 1 Day after spoilers. They are clearly the early favorite for strongest limited potential.

I can't decide if I want to go Rakdos or Orzhov. Mostly just for the solid removal I will likely need against gruul and simic folks.

I like Rakdos, the Showstopper a lot more in limited than Kaya, Orzhov Usurper and I think in general Rakdos has more solid limited cards. The new Teysa is awesome and all but it would be tough to build around her for limited... so if im gonna pray for a bomb rare/mythic I think I should go Rakdos. Thoughts?

I like the idea, but I believe you will loose pretty hard to anything creature based, e.g. white weenie, golgari, merfolk, even boros angels and similar. If you use your burnspells to kill creatures, they won't go into their faces. If you don't, you most likely get overrun, as you are not as fast as a traditional RDW or Burn deck.

My suggestions: A) either go all in on captive audience to win the game and put in some bordwipes mainbord like Ritual of Soot or even Rakdos, the Showstopper or Tetzimoc, Primal Death . However, the card you want to cut for that is most likely sword point diplomacy, so you go down a choice card.

Or

B) cut captive audience. I know, it is another choice card, but 7 mana in a mostly Burn Deck is something you never want to reach. Your Opponent should be dead before. Maybe you can put in in your sideboard against control as a finisher, this way it is technically still in your Deck . Loose a few lands, put in another damage source like Viashino Pyromancer or Sovereign's Bite and you should be good to go.

In any case, even if you don't like those suggestions, I recommend swapping firey cannonade in your sideboard to ritual of soot, as it kills Wildgrowth walkers and generaly creatures with counters on them.

This just might be my opinion: Rakdos, the Showstopper seems a bit too risky with the coin flips IMO

Thanks for the suggestions triproberts12. The Gustha's Scepter idea is pretty cool and would be a nice way to get around losing cards I don't want to lose. I did have Goblin Lore and Burning Inquiry in the deck, but the random discard was too, get this, unpredictable. Rakdos, the Showstopper is sweet, but I think I would need Krark's Thumb for him. Urza's Incubator would obviously be good, not sure what to cut for it, maybe Jet Medallion .

I'm glad you're not being "that guy." If the plan isn't to make empty hands hurt equally all around, though, there's a couple cards you can include to make it hurt less for you: Gustha's Scepter allows you to stash away your reanimation cards so you don't have to discard them, and it's completely mana free! Mindstorm Crown is another copy of Phyrexian Arena . I'd also run the new Rakdos, the Showstopper , Patriarch's Bidding , and Urza's Incubator , since you're going demon tribal.

My top card has to be Teysa Karlov. It is amazing, and just gets me so excited to build around it. After this it goes something like this:

  • High Alert this is amazing in Arcades, the Strategist decks. It enables your walls if Arcad,es isn't out, and gives them pseudo vigilance.

  • Rakdos, the Showstopper, this card is just cool. It has good stats and, to me, embodies what Rakdos does. Not to mention he is the perfect commander for my demon tribal deck.

  • Revival // Revenge, this card is just amazing. Recursion straight to the battlefield is always great, not to mention the second half. Doubling your life total while simultaneously cutting your opponent's in half is amazing.

  • Here it's a toss-up between Kaya, Orzhov Usurper and Kaya's Wrath. Kaya, Orzhov Usurper is a decent planeswalker, especially for 3 mana (at least in my opinion). Kaya's Wrath is an amazing board-wipe, especially since 4 cmc ones are rare these days.

  • Priest of Forgotten Gods, this is a good sac outlet for many decks. NOt to mention that it also has the upside of basically doubling as removal.

  • Essence Capture, blue hasn't really tickled my imagination this set. However, I love this counterspell. While it only counters creatures, the added bonus of a c+1/+1 counter is nice.

  • Tithe Taker, I like how this card is akin to Grand Abolisher. It limits what your opponents do, while also deterring them from killing (a little bit) it because of the token you get.

  • Biogenic Ooze, this card is just so cool. #OozeTribal

  • Smothering Tithe, ramp for white is always nice. While opponents can pay to stop it, it will end up being a cost that people just don't want to pay do they just let you have it (like Rhystic Study).

That's my thoughts on cards from the set, just keep in mind that I see these cards from an EDH perspective.

Might actually redo this AGAIN with the new Rakdos, the Showstopper Triple Tribal Deck if anyone cares. Or is this good enough. If you guys still care for Xantcha, Sleeper Agent, what suggestions for replacements would you recommend?
