Rakdos, the Showstopper Discussion

Rakdos, Lord of Riots can be a decent Commander, and you could run Rakdos, the Showstopper in the 99, but he requires some build-around. Cards like Subversion , Pyrohemia , Pestilence , and Palace Siege can help you get damage in to be able to cast him and use his mechanic to cast creatures for less. Some small CMC critters that tap to deal one damage are also good for getting him out onto the field. But this suite of cards can take up much needed slots, so consider carefully when building around him. Cheap, early drop aggro helps too, but you need to include at least around 7 to hope of getting one early enough to do what you want.

If you want to go big creatures, I'd suggest Rakdos, Lord of Riots : he is group slug + gives you the ability to cast huge creatures for cheap, or zero if they're colourless, like Eldrazis or big artifact creatures like Blightsteel Colossus .

Rakdos, the Showstopper makes for a good enough tribal deck, but could be a little underpowered overall. I wouldn't go with him if you were considering to be slightly competitive (which means you wanted to try to actually win).

Another good commander in RB is Xantcha, Sleeper Agent (is run by one of my friends): super fun, high interaction, easily gets to the lategame. I can link it if you will.

As for Vial Smasher the Fierce , it's a good commander, again group slug, but only hits one of your opponents. I'd definitely put it in the 99 of one of the previously mentioned commanders.

A massive update this time. One that I'm very excited about. Here are the changes:

Overall, the deck is faster and more consistent. Here's a summary of changes by card category:

  • direct damage is now at lower cmc
  • -1 Ramp
  • +1 protection/haste
  • +2 tutor
  • +5 draw
  • +1 anti-control
  • -4 Creature removal
  • -2 graveyard hate
  • -1 discard
  • -1 extra attack
  • -1 lifegain/recursion
  • +1 removal

So the changes overall are lower cmc, more draw and tutor, less creature removal and less utility (graveyard hate, extra attacks, etc.) Overall, the early turn plays to get direct damage and get Rakdos out are far more prevalent. The deck is more aggressive and more focused now, and plays much smoother.

And yes, this is the only deck I have where I've taken out Sol Ring . It's simply better to have only colored mana in order to cast Rakdos as consistently as possible!

Hi_diddly_ho_neighbor I like the idea of Cavern Harpy since it's so cheap and can also get many of the value creatures in the deck. I was actually contemplating a legendary-only version of the deck and had Saffi Eriksdotter in to serve the role of Niv protector but I need to do more testing, so far I never felt much need of replaying Niv consistently, replaying him when he got killed seemed enough. Rakdos, the Showstopper was there as well since I really enjoy the flavor of that card but I ultimately settled for a non-legendary list.

Sorry for the double post, but Rakdos, the Showstopper could be another fun inclusion. It's a boardwipe, which fits the rest of you deck, but also comes with a 6/6 flying trampler attached to it.
