Kothophed, Soul Hoarder Discussion

Flarhoon13 on Erebos' Totally Devoted to Death

Thursday night report, so much mana!

Tonight, finally added Crypt Ghast (replaced Ivory Tower) as I also put in Cabal Stronghold. Wow, amazing! I mean, no duh, right? I had Crypt Ghast most of the game and untapped a turn or two with those newly acquired cards plus Caged Sun and Cabal Coffers. Mike was borrowing my Kynaios and Tyro of Meletis deck and had the Insurrection but that was effectively countered by my Sudden Spoiling. I untapped and attacked, eliminating Arvad the Cursed because Angela's top deck was revealed by Brendon's Daxos of Meletis techy Lantern of Insight to be Urza's Ruinous Blast. After a Corpse Harvester sacrifice, Sheoldred, Whispering One reanimated Gray Merchant of Asphodel for the win. I was drowning in mana for enough turns to have over 20 devotion.

Of course, the previous game was more ignominious as I used Sidisi, Undead Vizier to get Bojuka Bog for Tori's Alesha, Who Smiles at Death deck rather than Cabal Coffers to further my own agenda. She was at a low enough life total I need not have done that. Kothophed, Soul Hoarder was then my final undoing as Tana, the Bloodsower had four swords equipped and enough tokens with a sac outlet to finish me off.

With all the removal in this I am surprised that you dont have Kothophed, Soul Hoarder which will allow you to capitalize with card draw.

Also, razaketh, the foulblooded is really nice when needing to fetch control peices. Id suggest adding Bruna, the Fading Light and Gisela, the Broken Blade. In a pinch you can sac Gisela to fetch Bruna, hard cast Bruna to bring back Gisela on main phase 2. EOT meld them.

Fervor and Anger are....ok. Dragon Tempest and Hall of the Bandit Lord are where you make your money. Urabrask the Hidden is technically a better option over Anger.

My deck is not 1v1 French, but you should be able to get some ideas from it: Kaalia, Beyond Heaven and Hell.

In terms of mana base, is there a reason you're playing so many Plains? Since your deck isn't biased towards white, you could balance out the basic lands unless you plan to run Emeria Shepherd. You're also missing Temple of Triumph. Clifftop Retreat, Isolated Chapel, and Woodland Cemetery would also be helpful to complete the cycle. Take out Boros Garrison and Rakdos Guildgate. You could cut Ash Barrens since you don't need colorless mana. Rampant Growth would be a better replacement.

Archangel of Thune grows all your creatures by a lot with Ikra's ability. You could try Goldnight Castigator for a flying high toughness creature. The new Evra, Halcyon Witness is pretty powerful if you're gaining lots of life. Malignus can be pretty big too.

I'm not sure Zacama synergizes that much with your gameplan considering the mana cost. If you want big dinosaurs, Zetalpa, Primal Dawn would probably be good for this deck. Maybe Verdant Sun's Avatar.

Well of Lost Dreams seems mana-heavy for card draw. Rishkar's Expertise might not be very reliable with your creatures. You could try Tymna the Weaver, Promise of Power, Soul of the Harvest, Kothophed, Soul Hoarder, Baleful Force. Necropotence of course would be amazing since you're gaining so much life.

You might as well add in Exquisite Blood for more lifegain and the potential combo with Sanguine Bond. You could cut Solemnity, Erebos, Vizier of the Menagerie, Deathrite Shaman, and Blind Obedience.

You want boardwipes that synergize with your deck by killing smaller creatures. Stuff like Languish, Hour of Devastation, or Subterranean Tremors.

Journey to Eternity  Flip could be good for recursion.

Nerd_253 I would use Kothophed, Soul Hoarder but my CMC stops at 5. I would be willing to put it in but not sure what to cut.

zombob57 Super glad you thought of the lich. My original plan was to make a B/U deck with both and ETB creatures and Conjurer's Closet. That way you could deck yourself with Laboratory Maniac or control with creatures like Venser, Shaper Savant. Great thought though! Torgaar, Famine Incarnate may have a place in my Queen Marchesa lich deck.

Have you considered a Harvester of Souls/Kothophed, Soul Hoarder effect? It seems pretty dumb with Pox.

You might consider running Kothophed, Soul Hoarder as your commander. He provides amazing card advantage in a deck like this.

Catalog9000 on Pact of Four Demons

Do you enjoy brewing? Do you love challenges? Do you love going big, fast, and dangerous?

This challenge might just be for you.

Make a Pact of Four Demons playable deck in the format of your choice (Probably easiest in EDH).

The only rule is you must use all four of the Demons Liliana made her pact with. They are:

  1. Demonlord Belzenlok

  2. Griselbrand

  3. Kothophed, Soul Hoarder

  4. Razaketh, the Foulblooded

The common element between all of these Demons is card advantage. They all either draw, tutor, or otherwise get something into your hand by some means. This means you'll want a deck that has a very strict goal in mind and you use one of these four to get there. What that goal is however, is entirely up to you. :)

And yes, I am aware of the T2 (T1 potential) Gris deck that slings with Goryo's Vengeance + Fury of the Horde. This isn't that deck. There'd literally be no point to using the other three Demons, lol.

Rakdos the Defiler, who shuts down opponents on the sneaked drop Kaalia gives him while negating his initial effect that one turn. Basically a second Master of Cruelties.

Kothophed, Soul Hoarder is a decent shell that gains you draws on the cheap. Crucible of Worlds, Sinkhole, and Ghost Quarter is a nice add on to this if you go land destruction later. If you added him Id get rid of Unburial Rites instead because he would trigger off of Living Death for each creature they sacrificed.

Magus of the Moat is just money for a Kaalia deck.

Bastion Protector is a nice add on for protection and commander damage buff that most dont consider for Kaalia. Death by commander damage using Kaalia? Is tha even a thing? Yep.

Demon of Wailing Agonies is lovely for forcing sacs.

Archfiend of Depravity is solid.
