Kothophed, Soul Hoarder Discussion

Hi! Thank you for creating this deck, i was looking for some cool demon deck, but only what i found were just decks filled with some expensive demons. However this deck has interesting engine in it that can cheat out demons or bring them back again from graveyard, and i love it! I'm playing it often, and still enjoying it. I made some personal changes, because not every card was available to me or i just wanted different demons there. :)
From sorcery i just cut out Duress, because i didn't need it, and it created space for more demons. :)
So for creatures: i kept all small dudes spawning small creatures - basically your nice cheating engine is kept untouched. However i made changes to some demons. Here is my list of demons:
one more Abhorrent Overlord because this card is fantastic in this deck as it spawns small creatures to sacrifice or chump block. So overall i have 2 of them in deck.
i kept Eater of Hope
i kept Kothophed, Soul Hoarder
i added 2x Overseer of the Damned because it creates more small creatures and can destroy enemy threat each time u pull him out.
added 1x Harvester of Souls as another card draw engine, and potential blocker for enormous creatures.
added 1x Lord of the Void cuz he is just so damn strong and people freak out when i pull him on board. :D
as an experiment i added 1x Desecration Demon but eventually i decided to remove him because if opponent have a lot of creatures, sacrificing one of them is not good enough for you and you have nor attacker or blocker. I put there 1x Griselbrand instead, because this deck lacks lifegain a little bit. I wish i could put there Westvale Abbey Flip to get Ormendahl, Profane Prince but this card is unavailable for me.
Having Liliana's Contract as an alternate win condition is great, because some decks like to get tons of life, so with that you can surpass it.
Overall this deck performed very well for me, it is also good against mill, because if he mills your demons into your graveyard, you just need to pull them on board, you don't want to draw them anyways. :D

I do have some changes, although I haven't gotten around to updating the list yet - I'll hopefully get to that later this evening.
I haven't yet had a chance to test Gravebreaker Lamia yet, but at first glance it looks perfect for this deck - a Goblin Electromancer in black, almost. The tutor-to-the-graveyard ability is almost just icing on the cake - there aren't a lot of specific cards we're looking for in the yard (although if we've got a reanimation spell ready, nabbing Kokusho or Gray Merchant could always be fun). In fact, I think I'd most likely end up grabbing Succumb to Temptation, Dark Bargain, or Moonlight Bargain most often, since kill spells are plentiful and card draw is a little tighter.
Kothophed, Soul Hoarder I'm a little less enthusiastic about. I don't think it's bad, per se, I would just rather have Harvester of Souls, most of the time. They cost the same mana (and are pretty close in price too). Kothophed has a bigger body, but Flying is a better offensive mechanic, and Deathtouch is better on defense, which is where I find I usually want to be. More importantly, I think it's dangerous to put ourselves in a position where an opponent with a sac outlet might kill us, given how much life black already tends to pay to draw cards. So I'd say run it as a second copy of Harvester of Souls, but definitely don't drop Harvester for Kothophed.
One other card I want to talk about quickly, that (again...) I haven't had the chance to actually try out but looks sweet is the new Liliana, Waker of the Dead. Her +1 doesn't hurt us as much as it will hurt our opponents, since most of our cards can be cast from the grave anyway, and her -3 could prove to be solid removal, given that our graveyard should always be fairly well stocked. And of course, should we protect her long enough, her ult is game winning. I'm going to give her a try and see how she does!

Hello! For starters I think your land count is a bit low for your average CMC. You should either add more lands or replace some spells with cheaper and more efficient ones. Vampire of the Dire Moon and Gifted Aetherborn are great cheap drops, giving you life and deterring attacks and blocks with deathtouch. Vampire Nighthawk has the same effect, with flying to boot. Exsanguinate might be easier to play than Debt to the Deathless. Another Wrath or the cheaper alternative Day of Judgment should also be easier to cast than Garruk's Wake. Diabolic Tutor is better than Razaketh's Rite.
For removal you can use Go for the Throat, Victim of Night, Fatal Push, Tragic Slip, etc. I think you have a lot of 1 of's and you could focus your strategy more with better cards and more copies of them. Still, this looks fun to play in multiplayer with friends

Destroy your opponents with nice combos like Athreos, God of Passage + Edgewalker + Shadowborn Apostle and combine them with loads of infinite combos, that'll give you: 1. Infinite mana and one alternative win Strategy ( Ashnod's Altar, Pitiless Plunderer + Revel in Riches ) 2. Infinite creatures ( Xathrid Necromancer ), infinite creature removal 3. Infinite carddraw combos ( Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos, Reaper from the Abyss + Kothophed, Soul Hoarder ) 4. Infinite Health and Damage towards your Opponents with Blood Artist, Cruel Celebrant, Daxos, Blessed by the Sun, Falkenrath Noble, Pious Evangel / Wayward Disciple, Zulaport Cutthroat, Syr Konrad, the Grim 5. Infinitly big creatures with Cathars' Crusade, Ob Nixilis, Unshackled 6. Infinte Mill with Altar of Dementia and with Razaketh, the Foulblooded 7. (Infinite mana + Rune-Scarred Demon) you have infinte tutors. 8. If you want, you can have Infinite carddraw directly through the Harvester of Souls or Skullclamp. Remember that you can tutor all demons for one mana by sacrificing six Shadowborn Apostle. You can get theese really fast with Remembrance. Also you have enough ramp (apart from the infinte combos) through Dark Ritual, Orzhov Locket, Orzhov Signet, etc. If you want all that faster, just put in Teysa Karlov in, who doesn't only trigger all aristocracy abilities twice, but also boosts the Xathrid Necromancer. If one of your Opponents wants to pay your Athreos tax, you can return all of your Apostles with Immortal Servitude really cheap. Then I added some removal, some boardwipes to round it up a bit and yeah. Now you'll get tired of MTG, because you almost always win.

@TheSimikBOat: Thanks for your suggestions!
- Savvy Hunter : When Food tokens came out, I was reminded of my experience with Clue tokens in this deck, which was very underwhelming, so I didn't test any of the cards in here. But you sound convinced, so I will test it (and also Gilded Goose and Witch's Oven , which also seem kind of promising to me).
- Korvold, Fae-Cursed King : Yeah, I want to run him (maybe instead of Kothophed, Soul Hoarder ), but he's a little too expensive right now.
- Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper : I tried it when I still ran Bloodghast , Nether Traitor and Reassembling Skeleton and even then it did very little. Right now, I mostly only want to sac tokens... Fun fact: The first iteration of my Shadowborn Apostle deck ran Sek'Kuar as commander, which worked quite well, but then I made it Abzan...
