Maybeboard

This is an early version of a Trynn and Silvar deck.

Please use the custom view to see the deck's breakdown by primary purpose.

Also please note that budget is a concern, which is why there is no Imperial Recruiter, Stoneforge Mystic or Demonic Tutor and other expensive cards that might be desirable. Just ignore the Blackcleave Cliffs - I had a spare.

The game plan is pretty straightforward: win in one of 3 ways:

As I've tried to avoid including creatures that weren't humans because of the synergies the Human tribe brings through Xathrid Necromancer, Jirina Kudro and so on, the emphasis is on option A.

A few specific card choices:

Odric, Lunarch Marshal: have Silvar eat a token before combat, and suddenly your board state is indestructible until end of turn, which replicates the effect of Frontline Medic. Also frequently shares around:

  • Menace (from Silvar)
  • First Strike (from the many humans that come with it)

and less frequently:

Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero: provides some degree of protection from board wipes (tokens can be cashed in for power on Silvar), but also combos with the free sac outlets and death trigger to double up on their effects. Also tutorable by both Recruiter of the Guard and Thalia's Lancers.

Thalia's Lancers: the deck contains a lot of Legendary cards, it makes sense to include a tutor on a body. Despite the relatively high CMC for such an effect, a lot of said legendary creatures are in the 3 cmc range, meaning being able to tutor and immediately cast them later in the game isn't inconceivable

Nahiri, the Harbinger: I'm on the fence with this card. The theory is that she is flexible, offering both card selection and removal. This is one that playtesting will provide me enough reason to keep her.

Thalia, Heretic Cathar: see that player using Fetchlands for his fancy OG Duals ? Yeah, now they are Guildgates that come down one turn later. Slowing down our opponent's ramp makes sense in an aggressive deck, as it means we have more time to wear them down before they hit a critical mass of value we can't overcome. It also means token decks have a harder time putting up defenses against us.

Steelshaper's Gift: though there are few equipments in the deck, the ones that are included are quite valuable - especially Skullclamp. For this reason, a 1 mana tutor to get the equipment I need seems worth a card slot.

A few points to finish, for which I would especially like to have feedback on:

  • The boardwipes included are aimed at being one-sided as much as possible, since this deck relies heavily on building and holding a creature-based boardstate. I could substitute Citywide Bust for Mythos of Snapdax, but for now I'd like to see if a 3 mana one-sided boardwipe works out.
  • I think the deck lacks a bit in card draw, and may have a bit too much in either Buffs or Ramp. Mardu colors struggle for mana fixing though, so I'm reluctant to cut one of the Talismans. In addition, though Demonic Tutor is currently outside of my price range, Diabolic Intent may be attractive enough to be worth the inclusion.
  • I'm also aware the deck contains a lot of lands that will enter tapped. Part of it is due to the Mardu manabase being not great if you don't go for Fetchlands or OG Duals because of cost, and part of it is down to me wanting some utility. I'll cut Emeria, The Sky Ruin in favor of something like Battlefield Forge if it turns out that I never get to use it's ability.
  • Many of the cards I chose were primarily for one role, but could fit in several. Judith, the Scourge Diva is mostly an anthem in this deck, but can also act as a Goblin Bombardment when sacrificing non-tokens. Etchings of the Chosen is an anthem that is also a sac outlet and a piece of protection. Oblation is mostly removal, but can be used as backup card draw by shuffling a token away in a pinch.
  • The deck has some recursion for creatures, but definitely lacks the ability to recur non-creature permanents. Sun Titan is a strong contender for making it into the list - the main reasons he hasn't so far are because of his 6 CMC and that he's not a human.
