Leovold, Because Everybody Else Is Doing It

Commander / EDH*

This is (what I believe to be at least) an optimized decklist for Leovold, Emissary of Trest. The goal of this deck is to lock every player out of ever having cards to play, and then just sit there for a little while until you win.

Keep in mind this is the douchiest way you can possibly play this commander, and that the deck costs four thousand dollars.

Card choices explained:

The Landbase

Pretty typical, meant to get any color combination as fast as possible.

Accelleration:

Arbor Elf, Birds of Paradise, Bloom Tender, Burgeoning, Chrome Mox, Deathrite Shaman, Dryad Arbor + Green Sun's Zenith , Elves of Deep Shadow, Elvish Mystic, Exploration, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Lotus Petal, Mox Diamond, Sakura-Tribe Scout, Skyshroud Ranger, and Gemstone Caverns.

Not really much going on here, a suite of 16 1-mana accelerants that make Leovold come down on turn 2. Preference was given to cards that fixed colors. Bloom Tender is special in that it gets us Leo + a three mana wheel turn three.

Carpet of Flowers could also be super good, but is a little meta dependent. If you're up against a lot of blue, I'd swap in for an Elvish Mystic.

Wheels and Other Torture Devices:

Dark Deal, Day's Undoing, Diminishing Returns, Timetwister, Whispering Madness, Windfall, Wheel and Deal, Jace's Archivist, Anvil of Bogardan, Teferi's Puzzle Box.

With Leovold out these dump our opponent's hands while refilling our own. Teferi's Puzzle Box is the best, but if you resolve any of these with Leo you're probably going to win.

For Wheel and Deal, if there's a player you want to screw over in particular, wait until their draw step to cast it and give them a turn with no cards instead of two.

Counter Suite: To Protect Your Stuff.

Arcane Denial, Counterspell, Daze, Dispel, Flusterstorm, Force of Will, Mana Drain, Mental Misstep, Misdirection, Muddle the Mixture, Negate, Spell Pierce, Swan Song.

To protect your stuff. The cheaper the better so you don't have to hold up tempo. Usually 1-for-1 counter magic isn't the greatest plan in multiplayer, but our commander offers us such a massive swing in card advantage that it really doesn't matter.

Tutors: To Find Your Stuff.

Demonic Tutor: Vampiric Tutor, Imperial Seal, Grim Tutor, and Cruel Tutor: Duh.

Mystical Tutor: Grabs your wheels, or on rare occasion, a counter or some spot removal.

Personal Tutor: Grabs wheels.

Tezzeret the Seeker : Grabs Teferi's Puzzle Box or Anvil of Bogardan.

Muddle the Mixture: Grabs Anvil, grabs Hermit Druid, doubles as a counter.

Clutch of the Undercity: Grabs Puzzle Box, doubles as removal that lets us wheel things away after. Also grabs Wheel and Deal if you need that for some reason.

Green Sun's Zenith: Grabs Hermit Druid when you're not ramping with it.

Spot Removal: For Getting Out Spots

Clutch of the Undercity, Dismember, Nature's Claim, Pongify, and Rapid Hybridization.

These follow the same rules as countermagic. Cheaper the better, and should only be used on things that were going to disrupt your strategy. They come in handy for commanders that don't need to draw, like Zur and Yisan, because you can quickly make them uncastable if your opponents never get to draw their 5th land.

Draw: Because It's High Noon Somewhere...

Necropotence, Phyrexian Arena, Sylvan Library, and Dark Confidant.

All four of these can come down early enough to help you get what you want if you don't have it already. Necropotence has a nice bonus of stopping our hand from cycling with Puzzle Box all the time. (This also make Necropotence a "kill-on-sight" card if an opponent plays one.)

Wincons: Can't Win Without Em.

The wincons in this deck are mainly superfluous. If you lock everybody out of ever having cards in their hand they're not likely to be able to stop you from killing them. Extra win conditions are here just in case that plan fails.

Laboratory Maniac: Your main wincon, both Hermit Druid and Doomsday lead into him.

Hermit Druid: No basics! Yay! Once you have everyone locked down with the Puzzle Box, you can activate him to flip your library and cast Memory's Journey. Shuffle LabMan and Gitaxian Probe into your library, then flashback Deep Analysis, cast LabMan, and win. Total cost: and 4 life. Alternatively, if you have everyone locked you can just shuffle LabMan in an wait a turn.

Doomsday: At first I was not bothering with same turn win Doomsday stacks because the cards needed for them are super dead most of the time, but I figured the deck should have alternate ways to win without Leo, so the stack is current like so: Predict, whatever, Laboratory Maniac, Gitaxian Probe, Street Wraith. Total cost: first turn, and 4 life second turn. However, similarly to everybody's favorite hermit, if you have everybody locked down, you can just cast this, put LabMan and four lands on top of your library, and proceed to wait the turns. It's not like anyone's going to be able to stop you.

(I know there are faster/cheaper Hermit Druid and Doomsday routes than this; I just didn't want to detract from the deck's main strategy by including too many dead combo cards. These are back up plans.)

Leovold, Emissary of Trest, What? You thought he was just good for denying everyone's fun? Nope, if you lock everyone out of playing anything, you don't really need another wincon. Just hit everyone seven times. The only card that can stop our lockdown that can't be answered is Krosan Grip, so be sure to hit the green players first.

Notable Exclusions:

Sol Ring and Mana Crypt: This deck isn't really hungry for colorless mana, and with that in mind these were really just eating space.

Pact of Negation: This seems great, but usually our critical point for casting counters is at or before we have four lands. :(

Merchant Scroll: Worldly Tutor, Sylvan Tutor, Transverse the Ulvenwald, There just aren't really any creature's or blue instants we really want to tutor for.

Fabricate: Had this in for a little bit, but it's just so horribly off curve for Leo/Puzzle, and Puzzle is the only thing I'd be searching with it.

Time Reversal, and Time Spiral: Extra wheels would be nice, but these are a little over curve.
