Today this is true for your opponent's creatures. Tariel, Reckoner of Souls is here, which means that creatures will get no rest in paradise or Damnation . Rather, they will spend their days being resurected to serve their new mistress. There is no escaping the Dread Summons of the Wheel of Fate unless you want to spend eternity suffering the Wrath of God . Tariel is your new god now, and you will obey her Austere Command until your dying breath if you ever hope to find rest. Now go, Reforge the Soul within you and find new life within the all-mighty Tariel, Reckoner of Souls !

Someone once told me "Mardu is the Boros of the 3-color combos". I took that as a personal offence, I believe that Mardu can be quite good if built correctly. So, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! I mean seriously, everybody knows that Naya is the Boros of 3-color (This is just a joke. Please don't hurt me.)! So, I took it upon myself to build a fun, but still pretty good Mardu deck. So, I went a searching for fun Mardu Commanders. Upon the return from my epic quest (AKA a quick search on gatherer) I had three possibilities in mind: Tariel, Reckoner of Souls , Queen Marchesa , and Oros, the Avenger . Queen Marchesa looked pretty fun, but I see her brewed a lot. Marchesa wasn't the chosen one. Oros, the Avenger also looked interesting, but I wasn't quite sure where to go with him and he can draw hate from the table. Oros wasn't the chosen one. That left us with Tariel, Reckoner of Souls . Now this card had me excited. Tariel lent herself to a fun strategy, and her randomness seemed fun. Additionally, I have never really seen Tariel decks around, so I knew that I could do something at least partially original and fresh. I knew Tariel was the one for me. That leads us to today, and the deck you are looking at right now!
This deck is pretty straightforward: steal all the creatures from your opponent's graveyards so that they can fight for you. Essentially, we need to survive until our commander, Tariel, Reckoner of Souls , can hit the field. To do this we must control the board since our deck don't produce a board presence on its own, we have to rely on other decks for that. This is done through a multitude of removal spells, with a good chunk of them being boardwipes like Damnation . The hope with this is that we will pretty much always have a reset ready to go in case an opponent gets out of hand, and single-target answers for those annoying threats that our opponents may put out. We also want to be casting some of our wheel spells like Reforge the Soul and Wheel of Fortune to get as many creatures in our opponent's graveyards as possible. Hopefully, if all goes well, once Tariel hits the board people have been wiped a few times, wheeled, and generally aren't in a great position. This means that we can now start enacting our game plan. Now is the time to start pulling creatures out of opponent's graveyards with Tariel and our other recursion spells like Rise of the Dark Realms , Animate Dead , and Debtors' Knell .
Tariel is central to this deck, it was based on her after all. Because of this there are a few cards that are in here specifically to take advantage of Tariel.

Filling the graveyards with creatures is the central focus of the deck, along with bringing those creatures back out to fill your board. Doing this can be divided into two basic subthemes: Wheels and Removal.

  • Wheels: Our wheels, and similar effects, have one singular goal: take what is in our opponents hand (and in some cases library) and put them directly into the graveyard. Our discard is things such as Wheel of Fortune , Wheel of Fate , and Magus of the Wheel . These cards are an effective way to get lots of cards in the graveyard quickly (plus they also have the benefit of being absolutely bonkers with Smothering Tithe on the field ;P). Additionally, Dread Summons , Syr Konrad, the Grim , and Geth, Lord of the Vault also allow us to put libraries directly into the graveyard.

  • Removal: Removal is the other way that we get creatures into graveyards for us to then take out later. Our main tool to do this is the infamous, and dreaded, boardwipe. We run a decent amount of these. This is because wiping the board will rarely harm us, but it can really set back opponents (especially if it is done multiple times). Lastly we also have single target removal like Bedevil and Anguished Unmaking just incase our opponents get out a creature that we really don't want to deal with, but when a full boardwipe is unnecessary.

  • Bringing creatures back to life from the graveyard is the main theme of the deck, and our main source of this will likely be Tariel, Reckoner of Souls . However, that doesn't mean that we can't have other recursion sources. Recursion can be broken down into two categories: Single target where we pick and choose what we want, and mass recursion where we just decide to dump everything from everywhere onto the table.

  • Single Target: Graveyards not full enough for you? That's fine, just go find the best creatures from the graveyards and slap them onto your side of the board using spells like Animate Dead , Debtors' Knell , and Reanimate !

  • Mass Recursion: The moment every necromancer dreams of, casting something like Rise of the Dark Realms and watching their opponents tremble in fear!
