[Mayael] From the Pinnacle to the Pit

Commander / EDH* Battlecruiser Multiplayer RGW (Naya)

Hello, welcome to my Mayael the Anima deck. Mayael is my first and my main commander, I play her since 2013. It's a funny, a bit random, deck for a casual meta ! Perfect if you like big creatures with some unique effect.

The goal of the deck is a classical battlecruiser ("control" the board until you can attack with few big creatures), but I added a big pillowfort package. The strategy is to find some big fatties who will block your opponents to attack you or do what they want, protect your board, and attack few times with big creatures. So some of the creatures inclusions can be really meta dependant depending on which kind of opponents you want to block.

The deck design can be a bit different from others Mayael decklist (but not that much). I focused a lot more on cheating creatures (or others permanents) from the top of the library and keeping them on the board. That's why some Mayael staples are not there like Elvish Piper , Quicksilver Amulet etc...

The deck can be easily divided in two parts : the first is the creatures with power > 5 you will cheat with Mayael (or other cards), the second part is the engines helping to filter the library or to cheat more cards. Of course, there is also a ramp package, a removal package. But no draw package.

There are some some one-shot way to know the top (like scry land), otherwise there are some filter engine you can use every turn. Useful with Mayael of course, but mostly they will help you to don't draw high CCM creatures.

One-shot scry :

Need creatures to work :

Most reliable :

Change the top :

  • Worldly Tutor : There are not a lot of tutors in the deck (by choice), but this one at instant speed is really great because there are a lot of ways to cheat creatures at instant speed.
  • Oracle of Mul Daya : With the other filter engine, you can easily put your lands on top and you will be able to dig faster (and ramp a lot)
  • Scroll Rack , Penance : You will certainly draw creatures so they are useful to put them back on top.

One-shot cheat :

Cheat from library :

  • Call of the Wild : Doesn't cheat creatures into play put the price is not really expensive. Also you can do it at instant speed.
  • Etali, Primal Storm : You can cheat your own stuff but you also make a lot of value by stealing your opponents spells.
  • Lurking Predators : In multiplayer, it generate tons of value too. Even without way to filter the top of your library, you will be sure to be one or two creatures in play.

Cheat from hand :

  • Ilharg, the Raze-Boar : I'm not really into cheating from my hand. But Ilharg is nice with Mayael because you can play it again and again quite easily. There are not a lot of nice ETB, but a Blightsteel Colossus sneak attack can hurt.
If we reduce the number of cards in the library, we improve our chances to find interesting cards with Mayael. That why most of the ramp spell are looking for at least two cards and there are severals fetchlands.

Lands :

Ramp package :

Tier List Creatures

Balefire Dragon : The "one-sided wrath" seems nice. It's also nice with Warstorm Surge

Ilharg, the Raze-Boar : It's a bit against my strat to don't cheat from my hand. But Ilharg is really hard to deal with, work well with Mayael because I can cheat him easily again. I have only a few ETB big creatures so it's not perfect.

Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger : I don't like to attack with all my creatures, so I like to have a really big one who can kill someone alone. The new Ulamog is nice because it's indestructible, and the exile is less strong than Annihilator but it's still really powerful.

Dragonlord Dromoka : I want to put some cards to protect me against counterspell. I mostly play during my turn, so Dromoka protect quite well.

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed : I don't like it deals 6 damages to me too and I don't play only creatures. But I think, after I put my engines on the board and I need to lock the game, it can be useful. I also don't like I need to attack with it everyturn.

From my point of view, the top tier creatures you can take with Mayael. You will often be very happy to take them and they are usually always useful.
