Heroes' Bane

Cthu1uS4uru5R3x, 8 years ago

I added the Heroes' Bane and removed a Golgari Guildgate. I had found that I was getting plenty of lands, and wanted to add the Heroes' Bane to the deck.

Amonkhet Update

CrimsonWings3689, 8 years ago

Rhonas's Monument to replace Sword of the Animist, as a way to cheapen the cost of my creatures and simultaneously get a pump effect to make Selvala tap for more mana seems like a no brainer.

Prowling Serpopard might make the cut as well if for no other reason that it makes my creatures uncounterable, is uncounterable itself and has a decent body, especially for the cost.

Amonkhet Update

CrimsonWings3689, 8 years ago

Manglehorn will replace Vithian Renegades as it's a less color restrictive casting cost with an additional upside.

Choke is replacing Monsoon as my meta has gotten more competitive as of late. It costs 1cmc less than Monsoon, and will prevent blue players from comboing off. Monsoon is great, but it merely forces blue players to tap out or go all in on their turn if they're not going to be able to counter anything.

Currently trying to find a cut for Dragon Broodmother as it's a very useful pet card, and can generate ridiculous value if unchecked. Also, Dragonlair Spider is another contender for the deck for similar reasons. Unsure of what to cut for those options. Possibly Silklash Spider... it hasn't performed as well as it does on paper, due to a lack of fliers to blow up at the time, or when it's on the board, my field is already beyond caring what my opponent's have for fliers. Oblivion Sower does work, but because it's an on cast effect, I can't abuse it and cheating it into play won't benefit me.

Testing Voltron

BarfQuackers, 8 years ago

Finally started playing at a more competitive level so I switched Sram to the command zone. With the switch I'm gunna be testing out:

+1 Sword of Light and Shadow -1 Quietus Spike, the spike was really nice when I was taking people down from 40+ but with Sram I think graveyard recurrence would help better.

+! Silverblade Paladin -1 Etched Champion, I think the double strike redundancy will be nice in place of an unblockable creature that I won't use anymore. However I will miss the indestructible blocking so maybe I might take Duelist's Heritage because of the amount of pro-white.

+1 Recruiter of the Guard -1 Plains, the deck needs Puresteel Paladin to function at its full potential so I added one tutor for him and if he's ever in the grave the added recurrence will help. I took out a land because 35 lands seems like enough but we'll see.

Edit: After playing with the voltron build here are some possible/ unlikely tests I'm trying.

-1 Silent Arbiter +1 Tenza, Godo's Maul, with the voltron change we don't have to worry about being attacked and want a more aggro strategy +3/+3 for 4 isn't bad.

-1 Ghostly Prison +1 Grafted Wargear Read above. Pillowfort strategy is out aggro is in.

-1 Avacyn, Angel of Hope +1 Bonesplitter Seems too high of a CMC to be played but it has dropped before testing out bonesplitter for higher commader damage

Total Revamp! thanks MarlFox

I played 8 games over this last weekend and was able to get a better feel for what the deck was missing. That being said, my "few cards to add to the deck" pile grew to well over 100 cards as it sits now. Going to be filtering through and posting up an updated deck list later this evening, hopefully. Thank you very much for your response MarlFox. Really got the wheels turning..

Removing Counterspells

MegaMatt13, 8 years ago

I've decided to remove all the counterspells in the deck. All of my other blue deck have them and I wanted the challenge of having at least one blue deck without them. This is the least control-oriented deck of my blue decks so it made sense here.

I've thrown in Genesis Wave and Part the Waterveil as other game finishers. Path to Exile has been added to ensure I still have a decent amount of removal.

I've also updated the deck description in a way that helps explain how the deck typically plays

another rework

Dropped completely the Planar Bridge plan and went for more aggressive planeswalker approach and mainboarded more counterspells.

Messing with non-land mana sources

Beebles, 8 years ago

I'm messing around again with this list. The deck was light on additional mana sources and I get mana screwed with this list relatively often due to that. However, I've not been sure on what to use to solve this. Cards like Wild Growth are nice, but too risky imo. And cards like Cultivate are not really what I want with this list + have negative synergy with Land Tax. I would also want some of those cards to fetch non-basics to access the many land options this deck has to offer. So now I went for other cards with a similar mechanic as Land Tax, including Weathered Wayfarer. Not sure yet on the selection, as there are other contenders I'd like to include, like Gift of Estates and Knight of the Reliquary. I'll ponder on it some more, but feel free to give me your ideas about this.

Cheers,

Beebles

Considered changes

seshiro_of_the_orochi, 8 years ago

I'm currently thinking about kicking Nemesis of Mortals. He's strong, but kind of boring. Ideas for a replacement are something like 2x Nessian Asp and putting Prey Upon up to four in the main deck. Thoughts? Other ideas? Please let me know :)

Mana Base

I am still waiting for the Amonketh spoilers, when they are done I will check if the manabase is still good or if I have to change it a little bit.

Get more value out of your dying creatures

Dark_Danda, 8 years ago

Cut one Chord of Calling and put in one Abzan Ascendancy

will make Blood Artist very deadly and also resets Kitchen Finks and in general helps to put up a clock with +1/+1 counter.

Its been a while

chaosumbreon87, 8 years ago

Haven't had much time to update between college, work and etc but it seems like you liked the deadeye palinchron combo so that matches infinites 1, 2 and 3 so I'll add those in. Ill also add in some tutors at the $8 range/cards from kaladesh (shouldnt be that far over the 5$ budget). Its been a while so any underperforming cards? cards you want to see more of? Less of? anvil, time warp not added due to high price relative to budget

Final games soon to be played.

As sad as this is, Xenagos is going to be retired for good. I have come up with a great Naya Partners concept and I can't afford to repurchase all of the R/G lands found within Xenagos. In addition to this, I shall be making a mono green deck at some point as a lot of the cards within the deck are too good to let sit idle. Ergo, sometime soon Xenagos will be hitting the table for the last time. However, Xenagos will not be forgotten. #XenagosLives!

Major adjustments

Daedalus19876, 8 years ago

The deck has been tuned to include many more burn elements, plus some cards profiting off of Hazoret being indestructible (like Pariah's Shield). This reduced the creature count, making my board wipes more asymmetric but making Rites of Initiation worse. Out it goes!

Tons of Playtesting

Bengernaut, 8 years ago

After playing solitaire-type playtesting against some of my other decks, I think this is in a good spot. The Simian Spirit Guide + Boom / Bust + Darksteel Citadel combo for a turn one LD is still something I would like for the deck but the financial cost is a bit much for such a tenuous combo (having all three in hand for turn one is not a guarantee, obviously).

Instead, I stumbled upon Strip Mine which is really a broken card, but whatever. With four of those in my deck I can use Raze + Strip Mine for a turn two, 2LD combo by sacrificing Strip Mine which I would have to do anyway. This is far more reliable and financial available so this is wonderful.

Additionally, I tried out Surgical Extraction and that card can really make the difference between an opponent coming back or being totally knocked out of the game early. I want 2-3 of them for this deck but the problem again arises where the cost is simply absurd. If I can manage to get my hands on the card for a reasonable price, I will.

Otherwise, the addition of the mana-generation cards like Seething Song and rite of flames have been really helpful, especially with Strip Mine removing a good chunk of my mana from the deck. I had Koth of the Hammerfoil in the deck earlier and he didn't feel as valuable. His -2 ability is really awesome but since his hp starts at 3 and I do not run a creature heavy deck I feel Chandra, Torch of Defiance is a more reliable source of mana when considering Seething Song and rite of flames.

--That all said, I have gone ahead and purchased the cards I need for the deck with the exception of those I mentioned above and Chandra, Torch of Defiance because they are prohibitively expensive. I may be able to pick up Chandra, Torch of Defiance and 2x Surgical Extraction soon, though.
