Muldrotha - Permanents Are All You Need

Commander / EDH* BUG (Sultai)

This deck is an experiment in running absolutely no instants, and only a single sorcery ( Primal Surge ). In place of the sorceries and instants, the deck has a slew of permanents which fulfill the same purposes. Don't have a Counterspell ? Try using Daring Apprentice or Glen Elendra Archmage . Need creature removal but don't have a Murder ? That's fine, just evoke Shriekmaw , or crack Seal of Doom . Artifacts or enchantments giving you trouble? Sacrifice your Sylvok Replica or Seal of Primordium . And as for a boardwipe, Pernicious Deed has you covered with the added benefit of not killing your own commander so long as x is less than 6.

  1. Cast Avenger of Zendikar late into the game (when your graveyard contains many lands) and then kill World Shaper .

  2. Summon Titania, Protector of Argoth and sacrifice any of the following: Terramorphic Expanse , Evolving Wilds , Myriad Landscape , etc... Then recur that card using Muldrotha, the Gravetide 's ability and repeat for a free army of 5/3 elementals.

  3. Equip Muldrotha, the Gravetide with Helm of the Host for additional instances of her ability. Having two copies of Muldrotha, the Gravetide means you can cast 2 cards of each permanent type from your graveyard each turn, three of her means three of each permanent type each turn, and so on. Eventually, you don't really have to care about restrictions on the number of each permanent type, and your graveyard truly becomes and extension of your hand.

  4. Play Thespian's Stage and use its ability to target Dark Depths . Let the original Dark Depths die to legend rule, leaving Thespian's Stage as a Dark Depths with 0 ice counters on it, which immediately cracks for your 20/20 flying indestructible Marit Lage. And remember, Muldrotha lets you play lands from the graveyard, so even if someone manages to deal with Marit Lage, you can do it all again in 2 turns.

  5. Feed Reef Worm to Razaketh, the Foulblooded , then feed the 3/3 Fish and 6/6 Whale to him as well for more tutors than you'll know what to do with. Use Muldrotha, the Gravetide to re-play Reef Worm to do it all again.

  6. Bind Deadeye Navigator with:

  1. Relentlessly cheat the mana cost of It That Betrays by getting it into your graveyard and then using Animate Dead , Body Double , or Journey to Eternity   (flipped) to get it onto the board.

  2. Cast Primal Surge and have it successfully resolve. The rest of the deck is entirely permanents, so the spell allows you to put as much of your library as you like directly onto the battlefield. As long as Laboratory Maniac is either on the board or in your library, letting Primal Surge resolve is basically GG.

  3. Ult with either Liliana Vess or Kiora, Master of the Depths .

  4. Flood the board with plants and buff them using Avenger of Zendikar .

  5. Go for the face with the Marit Lage you got from the Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage combo. Use Muldrotha, the Gravetide to re-cast Dark Depths and Thespian's Stage but don't activate Thespian's Stage just yet (Marit Lage is legendary, so making a second one would trigger legend rule). Instead, just leave dark depths and thespian's stage on the board so everyone knows that using removal on Marit Lage is pointless since you can replace it whenever you want.

  6. (My Favorite) Cast Card: Defense of the Heart, and when it triggers do the following:

I chose to include only permanents (with the exception of Primal Surge ) for three reasons:

1) The more permanents you have, the more use you get out of Muldrotha, the Gravetide 's ability.

2) It's such an interesting idea, and with this commander, I think you can actually get away with it. When's the last time you saw a commander deck, especially one in blue, running no instants or sorceries? Sure Glen Elendra Archmage might not be as convenient as a Counterspell , but I think that when you start using her over and over again, the scales start to shift in her favor.

3) Lastly, there's the Primal Surge combo. Having even a single sorcery or instant in the deck changes primal surge from a win condition to an unreliable play of questionable value (especially since knowing my luck, the instant or sorcery will be the first damn card I flip).

A goal of mine for this deck was to make it effective without going down the route of "you can all sit still there and watch me play Magic by myself" style stax decks. I've "played" against many decks like that, and while I can't deny their effectiveness, they just aren't fun to play with or against. I believe that Commander is a format that is first and foremost about fun, and forcing everyone else to band together against you like you're playing Archenemy is the exact opposite of fun for everyone involved. If you're trying to win in a competitive environment and feel stax is the way to do it, more power to you. But if you try to bring that kind of a deck to a friendly game with no stakes, then you're quickly going to learn that nobody at the table is going to like you. As a result, I am fully aware that cards such as Merciless Executioner , Fleshbag Marauder , Butcher of Malakir , Grave Pact , Dictate of Erebos , Smokestack (god forbid), and similar cards all have powerful synergy with Muldrotha, but I have no intention of putting them in here.

Changes:

-1: Card: Secrets of the Dead to make room for...

+1: Laboratory Maniac to make Primal Surge into an instant win

-1: Forest to make room for...

+1: Exotic Orchard . Since , , and are arguably the most popular colors in commander (they definitely are in my playgroup) this is likely to tap for at least 2 of our colors in most games, if not all 3.

-1: Ravenous Chupacabra to make room for...

+1: Defense of the Heart

Upgrades:

  1. Add Lion's Eye Diamond (LOL I WI$H), and replace Body Double with Phantasmal Image . This enables an infinite combo which lets you reset Muldrotha, the Gravetide 's ability an unlimited number of times in a single turn.

  2. Add dual lands with basic land types (also expensive):

Other Cards:

There are far more cards that could be powerful in this deck than the 100 card limit allows. Aynthing in the Maybeboard of this deck is either a planned upgrade or a card that I think is worth taking a look at, but couldn't find a spot for in my deck.
