Razaketh Combo: Second Draft

Major improvements have been made. After some advice I got on the cEDH subreddit, I've decided to drop the Nooze combo and make Aetherflux Reservoir the main win-condition, using No Rest for the Wicked and Yawgmoth's Will to recycle 0 drops. This makes tutor lines able to be longer, and frees up about six deck slots. Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth + Walking Ballista is still combo plan B. Deck has increased speed, turn 3 wins are possible, and turn 4 wins are standard.

I'm still testing, but I'm loving the way this came out so far

Goal of the deck is to play creatures while ramping into Razaketh, and then immediately use his ability to combo out and win.

The combo lines you can use to do this will vary depending on what's in your hand and on the battlefield, but suffice to say that if you have 0 useful cards in hand and 0 mana left over after casting Razaketh, then you will need 3 other creatures in play to win the game that turn. The combo line would look like this:

  1. First tutor: Mana Crypt or Lion's Eye Diamond (Make sure to sac LED at a time when nothing useful is in your hand.)

  2. Second tutor: Genesis Chamber or Pawn of Ulamog (If LED was used earlier in the game, you have no extra mana, and Genesis Chamber is unavailable, then you may need to grab 2 mana sources to cast Pawn of Ulamog. This isn't likely.)

  3. Third tutor: A zero drop creature (Memnite, Ornithopter, Phyrexian Walker , or Shield Sphere )

  4. Play the zero drop and sacrifice it to tutor another zero drop and net a Myr or Eldrazi Spawn along the way. Repeat three times. (You can grab some mana with a token and do the same to Priest of Gix, Blood Pet, and Overeager Apprentice if you want.)

  5. You now have 3 to 5 extra creatures to sacrifice, and two combo paths you can take:

Option A (You're Flooded):

  1. Tutor Lotus Petal or Mox Whatever, Sacrifice or Songs of the Damned, Buried Alive, Reanimate or Animate Dead, and either Lightning Greaves or Thousand-Year Elixir.

  2. Cast your 0-drop mana and your ritual to get 8 mana.

  3. Play your haste enabler and Buried Alive. Put Necrotic Ooze, Palladium Myr, and Pili-Pala in your graveyard.

  4. Reanimate Necrotic Ooze and use it's abilities to generate infinite mana of any color. Use your infinite mana to replay Razaketh if you sacrificed him.

  5. Sac Necrotic Ooze or any creature you have left over to tutor Walking Ballista. Burn everyone for the win.

Option B (Mana Saver Edition):

  1. Tutor Lotus Petal or Mox Whatever, Songs of the Damned, and Rings of Brighthearth.

  2. Play all three and double your next tutor with Rings of Brighthearth. Search for Basalt Monolith and Sensei's Diving Top .

  3. Play them and generate infinite colorless mana and infinite draw.

  4. Burn everyone with Walking Ballista for the win.

There are other chains you can do, and some of the tutors will be unnecessary if you ramp past 8, but that's the gist of it. As you can see I like having 2 of everything.

Our landbase is very standard for monoblack ramp, and is pretty much pulled exactly from ANT Sidisi. The simplicity of the landbase is one of the main factors as to why this deck can be built well without very much money. For more on that check out the Building on a Budget section at the end of this primer.

Notable lands:

  • Lake of the Dead (ALL): Best Land in the deck, and almost the best ramp, If you need to tutor for a land it should probably be this one. Be sure to tap the Swamps you're sacrificing before sending them to the yard.
  • Blinkmoth Nexus (MM2) and Inkmoth Nexus (MBS): These turn into extra creatures to feed to Raz later. Ideally you should use mana you've tutored for by sacing other creatures, but if you're forced to, waiting until you have nine mana and playing Raz is viable.
  • Cavern of Souls (MM3): Counterspell protection for Raz.
  • City of Traitors (EXO): Ramp on a land, but a little tricky. You're going to want to play this the turn before you expect to combo off. Netting extra mana that turn and your combo turn, when you tap it before its trigger resolves.
  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx (THS): Testing for the time being. Might get cut if devotion doesn't get past 3 fast enough.
  • Cabal Coffers: Not tapping for mana by itself makes this too slow for a deck that's not looking to play past turn 4.
  • Mishra's Workshop: I thought it would be great here, but since it doesn't help cast Raz directly and half of our ramp is non-artifact it wound up hurting more than helping.
  • Peat Bog and Ebon Stronghold : These come in tapped and I hate them. Lol, just kidding. These two work well in ANF Sidisi where all you need it to cast Ad Nauseam, but this deck is really focused on pumping out creatures on turn 1 to 3, so making sure we have extra mana to work with on those turns is top priority.
  • Boseiju, Who Shelters All: While a mainstay in ANF Sidisi, casting Ad Nauseam is not nearly as important for this deck, and beside AN there aren't really many instant's or sorceries we wil care about being countered. It also comes in tapped, and eats life.
  • Shocklands: There's not point, and we have better things to do with our life total.
  • Volrath's Stronghold: Also no point.
