Courage in Crisis

Sorcery

Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature, then proliferate. (Choose any number of permanents and/or players, then give each another counter of each kind already there.)

Epicurus on Grumgully Tribal

Doubling Season is a wickedly good card, and I would almost never recommend cutting it from a list if you are lucky to own one. However, in this deck token producers are limited. I could conceive getting into situations where either it sits in your hand because you have other things to spend the 5 mana on that are situationally better, or you fall a turn behind by casting it and get very limited returns on that investment. To be totally honest, I would swap it out for Hardened Scales, which costs less, and I believe you'd get more value from it.

Also, I love that you're going Goblin tribal with Grumgully! I did the same thing with Wulfgar. In either case, it's definitely not the ideal way to build for that commander, but it's hella fun, and if you get it right you may win just by being unexpected. Having said that, there are definitely a few more appropriate cards that you could include which synergize with your commander. Bloodspore Thrinax, Champion of Lambholt, Evolution Sage, Runaway Steam-Kin, Rishkar, Peema Renegade and Courage in Crisis, just to name a few ideas. Not that you have room for all of that, but a few of them wouldn't hurt.

That's all I got, just off the top of my head. As for your comment about sac outlets, really your only options for infinite mana would be the two altars (Phyrexian Altar and Ashnod's Altar), both of which are incredibly expensive. Maybe Druids' Repository would be a good choice for ramp? And you may need more draw power, so possibly adding Skullclamp, Colossal Majesty, Return of the Wildspeaker and/or The Great Henge would be helpful.

Cheers!

Rebullet took in your considerations and then copied deck you made.

I think it looks much better. I love The Great Henge but for budget purposes I'm keeping out for now and replacing it with Implement of Ferocity which I may actually replace that with another copy of Courage in Crisis.

How does the sideboard look? Is it spread out too thin? Should I remove some cards and increase the number of others?

Hey man, your deck is very similar to my abzan scales deck. I made mine when Khans first dropped and have made small improvements to it but it's still a pretty consistent deck.

For creatures I do run 1 Abzan Battle Priest and 2 Mer-Ek Nightblade. I Appreciate the buffs they give but that's usually after a few turns. Ainok Bond-Kin and Abzan Falconer are also great to have as they come out earlier and give creatures first strike and flying. You already have the falconer of course.

For spells I run Citadel Siege, Brave the Sands, Bioshift, Feat of Resistance, and Solidarity of Heroes. Kin-Tree Invocation is also very nice. Recently I paid two mana to get a 9/9 spirit. For removal I use Hunt the Weak, Naturalize, and Putrefy.

Don't forget about proliferate. You're using Planeswalkers to create tokens which will work, but I always find that Planeswalkers are easily removed. Cards like Courage in Crisis and Grateful Apparition are cards I've been thinking of adding and they might work for you too!

The problem with Everflowing Chalice is that the mana is not green, and you have a lot of creatures. You might look at reducing some of them or some of the chalices - 4 might be too many, although it wouldn't be bad if you're focusing on Animation Module & the Champion. I think I would drop Courage in Crisis for something like Plummet or Vines of Vastwood or Naturalize or Beast Within.

Hello rog0325. Sorry for taking a while to respond.

It looks like you made some adjustments to your deck already and it is looking better. I Would try to add another copy of Nissa, Who Shakes the World to your deck and maybe 1 more Cultivate . The reason for these additions is they will help your Hydroid Krasis become a much stronger payoff if you play it after resolving the previously mentioned cards.

To make room for the cards, I would personally cut Courage in Crisis or Stealth Mission .

I hope the deck is working out for you if you have had a chance to try it with the changes.

Heyoo, hope you don't find this weird. I was bored and just looking through the decklist you sent me 5ever ago. I had some thoughts on cards you might want to consider, just food for thought.

Overwhelming Stampede - awesome sorc, and you normally have at least 1 stupidly massive creature. 3 to 4 dollars.

Zendikar Resurgent - double your mana, draw cards for playing creatures, 4 bucks.

Stonecoil Serpent - not a hydra, but an X spell for you to double counters on later with vorel. I have one of these that you can just have, its like 4 or 5 bucks.

Courage in Crisis - counter on a creature and a proliferate trigger for 3 mana, pretty solid. trash common card super cheap.

Invigorating Surge - another super cheap instant, doubles counters similar to vorel's ability.

Solidarity of Heroes - same effect, more double trouble ;).

Inexorable Tide - proliferate whenever you cast a spell... pretty OP. 5 bucks.

Increasing Savagery - wowsa, that's a lot of counters, and ONLY A DOLLAR. nasty.

Bred for the Hunt - Draw cards for creatures with counters dealing dmg, cheap too.

Rampant Growth - great counterspell in these colors, worth considering since you cast really expensive spells. 1 doll hair.

Lazotep Plating - you probably have 10 of these lying around. way to protect your shiz.

Beast Within - staple removal in green.

Zameck Guildmage card draw dawg, card draw for counters. tight tight tight.

Its practically hydra tribal, get yo'self a Coat of Arms , I think you already have one in your binder.

If you decide to shell out on some cards, I think a few more expensive cards worth your while would be: Primal Vigor Branching Evolution Cyclonic Rift Rampant Growth - I have this in my Kenrith deck, its pretty great. Double Vorel's effectiveness with an equipment.

Id also put in more common ramp spells than the "draw X cards, put an extra land into play". cards like Cultivate , Rampant Growth , etc.

Lands lands lands, need better lands. Get some stuff like Command Tower , Yavimaya Coast , Llanowar Reborn , Temple of Mystery , Oran-Rief, the Vastwood , Simic Growth Chamber .

Alrighty, my rant is over.

Heyya Tanman, taking a look at the list and I have some broad critiques and some smaller ones. Let's start big.

  • You don't have enough +1/+1 counter cards to make it worth including payoffs for.

  • If you're playing infect, you're gonna need evasion, because no one in their right mind just lets an infect creature through, and honestly they're pretty small bois to begin with. Fleshing out the +1 counter package may help with this, big creatures are more troublesome to block and effects like Tuskguard Captain and Abzan Falconer can provide evasion beyond just being big and chunky.

  • You could do with a bit more ramp and a LOT more card draw.

  • Cards that are probably cuttable include:

Melira, Sylvok Outcast: This synergizes with Phyrexian Unlife, yes, but what else does it do? I don't think this card does enough to justify ots inclusion.

Oko, the Trickster: I see this walker being cast for 6 mana, putting two +1 counters on one of your dudes, and immediately being focused to death by the rest of the table because its ult wins the game. You'd honestly be better off with Citadel Siege, it's harder to kill.

Arrest, Luminous Bonds, and Pacifism: in our meta, with so many creatures that either don't need to attack or can just be sacrificed, you're better off using kill spells like Mortify, Putrefy, or Swords to Plowshares (especially Swords bc exile beats recursion).

Grave Betrayal: such a sweet card, but much too slow.

Omen of the Dead and Omen of the Hunt: neither of these really do anything to further your gameplan. The fact that they're enchantments doesn't matter to this deck, and there are stronger recursion and ramp options.

Sunbond: There are 5 cards in this entire deck that gain you life. Goes great with your commander but there are a lot of things I'd rather spend my turn 4 on.

Courage in Crisis: Three whole mana for this effect? It's not a horrible card, but definitely inefficient.

Debt to the Deathless: This card would only be okay if damage was your primary win condition. As is? Not good.

Duneblast: The 7-mana slot may not be ideal for a wrath? Maybe this one is fine tho, idk.

Planewide Celebration: 7 mana to proliferate four times? No.

Storm Herd: Once again, this might be fine if damage was your wincon. You'd get a bunch of evasive attackers. As is? Probably not good.

Insidious Will and Memory Drain: probably go for cheaper counterspells, like Disdainful Stroke, Negate, or Essence Scatter.

Altogether though, great first deck, this would've kicked the crap out of my old Marath build back in the day.
