Turntimber Basilisk

Creature — Basilisk

Deathtouch (Any amount of damage this deals to a creature is enough to destroy it.)

Landfall — Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, you may have target creature block Turntimber Basilisk this turn if able.

Licecolony: Thanks for your feedback. Your suggestions are really good. Some of the cards you mentioned I either do not own, or I have mycopies locked in other decks. This one is a really recent build with cards I had lying around, so it isn't fully optimized, yet. A card I'll add very soon is Turntimber Basilisk. I decided against it, at first, but then again, from this pretty terrible tribe, it's propably one of the best cards.

Love it. Why no Scute Swarm or Tireless Tracker? Also, this might be an unusual option, but I like Turntimber Basilisk in this deck specifically. Lastly, Vandalblast.
Also unsure why you have Whitemane Lion or Zendikar's Roil or Primeval Bounty or Inspiring Leader or Retreat to Kazandu.
Wouldn't Retreat to Emeria or Felidar Retreat have anthem-like effects in this deck?

@shadow63, No I specifically mean provoke found on cards like Deftblade Elite and Hunter Sliver . I know the effect has largely shifted to green for cards like Prized Unicorn and Turntimber Basilisk , but I want to see provoke return on some non-green cards as the effect hasn’t been completely scrubbed off of white and red cards such as Odric, Master Tactician and Impetuous Devils . Provoke also has this cool rules interaction when it’s put on a creature with Menace. If a creature with provoke and menace provokes a creature an opponent controls one of two things happens depending on their boardstate. If the opponent only has one creature to block with, that being the provoked creature, the creature doesn’t block the creature with provoke and menace but instead loses the ability to block for the turn. If the opponent has two or more creatures that can block the opponent must block the creature with menace and provoke with their provoked creature along with another creature of the opponent’s choice. I love how this interaction works out and I’d love to see a creature or even an equipment that lists provoke and menace on the same card. I have this custom card dedicated to the idea actually, it’s a 0/1 artifact creature with menace, provoke and the text line, “As long as this creature’s power is 0 it has indestructible.” And if that last effect makes it too strong I could put some drawback on top of all that like giving it prowess or some line of text that boosts it’s power off of something an opponent does just to make it vulnerable to removal/combat. I like the concept of provoke so much that I use Deftblade Elite and Infiltration Lens in one of my commander decks as a draw engine and I’d love to see a new/better creature to replace the deftblade, preferably one with menace or haste along with its protection ability, but at this point I think I’m making too specific of a wish to have happen. Regardless I seriously want to see provoke get a shoutout in some creative way in Modern Horizons 2, or at the very least give me some cooler art by reprinting Deftblade Elite in the set!

Turntimber Basilisk is better than Wasteland Viper for budget creature creature removal

Riku is a fun commander and can be built many ways. Generally, you want creatures with useful or powerful enter the battlefield abilities to make token copies of and generate extra ETB triggers and spells that scale up well when copied. Acidic Slime , for example is a fantastic creature for this deck. Using the ability plus the cost of the creature is mana intensive, so some more ramp might be useful. Creature ramp like Wood Elves and Farhaven Elf can be copied once your commander is put and ramp you early while for spell based ramp it is hard to beat Nature's Lore , Cultivate , and Kodama's Reach . Some recursion like Eternal Witness , Regrowth , and Archaeomancer can get key stuff back that has been destroyed and refill your hand as the game goes on. Cuts I would make to make room for some of those things would be Chalice of Life  Flip since you are not doing much life gain, and some of the more generic creatures like Beast of Burden , Turntimber Basilisk , and some of the other big beaters. Oh, also, Mulldrifter . Amazing and super extra amazing if copied with Riku.

Interesting Commander choice! Definitely don't see too many Baru decks around. I play mono green as well, though my commander is Titania instead. They do have in common that they use lands to good effect though.

I definitely have some suggestions most of which I'll keep budget as your total deck cost is 100$:

  1. Lands: since you are mono green you can afford to run a few utility lands (but I get that a high forest count is particularly important for you): Myriad Landscape and the various Panorama fetch lands - not quite sure about this suggestion but I imagine it can be strong to crack multiple fetches in the same turn for multiple Baru triggers.

  2. Mass forest ETB triggers: Scapeshift is on the pricey side but damn it would be strong here, Avatar of Growth , Boundless Realms , Collective Voyage , Circuitous Route , Explosive Vegetation , Far Wanderings , Perilous Forays , Traverse the Outlands +++.

  3. Kamahl, Fist of Krosa is both a strong card in here and a flavor win.

  4. More things that care about lands/manasinks: Howl of the Night Pack , Sporemound , Wolfbriar Elemental and Courser of Kruphix .

  5. Finally I'd like to highlight a few cards you are currently running that I would consider cutting: Grazing Gladehart , Traproot Kami and Turntimber Basilisk stick out to me.
