Who likes maths? You do? Great! Here are some simple equations:

Bruenor Battlehammer + Colossus Hammer = 17 Commander damage.
Bruenor Battlehammer + Colossus Hammer + any Sword of X & Y = 21 Commander damage. Oh dear, someone's dead.

'Steel Force' is a Boros equipment deck, fronted by Bruenor Battlehammer. Its main gimmick is running all ten coloured Swords of X & Y that have been printed, along with other useful Equipment. If you load up Bruenor with the right Equipment he can one-shot opponents with enough Commander damage to kill them on the spot. Don't believe me? The first game I played with Bruenor at the helm, he took out all three opponents in a few turns with just Sunforger and Whispersilk Cloak.

The deck also runs a versatile Sunforger // Mistveil Plains package that enables us to adapt to the needs of each game. Unattaching Sunforger at instant speed means we can choose from a toolbox of red or white instants to cast for free, allowing us to deal with variety of offensive or defensive situations. The toolbox element of the deck is supported by various Equipment tutor effects to find the right tools at the right time, plus some useful utility creatures that support the deck's concept. The result is a fun deck with explosive potential and some surprisingly versatile lines of play that offset its linear win condition.

Deck History

Equipment is one of the most popular Boros archetypes. There's a wealth of powerful equipment support in red and white, with many of the best cards allowing us to equip creatures while paying little to no mana. Equipment provides stats boosts to make our creatures more effective in combat, and offers a range of different protection and evasion effects to make them harder to remove. When I created my collection of Commander decks (I'm now up to 40 in total), I decided very early on that I wanted to include a Boros Equipment build.

The first version of this deck wasn't that different to what's listed here. The main change was that Akiri, Fearless Voyager was initially the commander, as I liked having access to regular repeatable card draw. I added the more recently-released Swords of X & Y (Sword of Hearth and Home, Sword of Forge and Frontier, Sword of Once and Future) as they became available, and then switched the commander to Bruenor Battlehammer once I saw its explosive potential. Finally I developed and refined a Sunforger package to make the deck far less linear and more adaptable. Although I was lukewarm about its early versions, I’m really enjoying playing it now it's more evolved and its win/loss record has definitely improved.

Power Level

I categorise decks in my collection according to four tiers of power, from 1 (most powerful) to 4 (least powerful):

Tier 1: Higher powered decks with fast mana, free spells, and infinite combos or instant wins that are searchable with tutors.
Tier 2: Well tuned decks which may have infinite combos or instant wins that are searchable with tutors, but not many fast mana sources and/or free spells.
Tier 3: Reasonably well tuned casual decks that are capable of powerful plays. May occasionally have infinite combos or instant wins but don't generally use tutors to find them.
Tier 4: Lower powered or linear decks, weak enough to play against other casual decks.

This is one of my Tier 2 decks. It's well tuned and features optimised card selections wherever possible. It has a bunch of tutor effects but they aren't used to find infinite combos or instant wins. I'd therefore categorise it as being on the average to high side of casual and is able to hang at most casual tables against a variety of opponents. The addition of fast mana sources is making it quicker and more explosive. Right now its win rate is around 50%.

Budget

Show

With the addition of some fast mana sources, the average price for this deck on Card Kingdom is now around $1200. Obviously that's well out of the range of most casual decks but it's perfectly possible to build a cheap version without these and to just use whatever Equipment you have lying around. Budget Bruenor Battlehammer builds full of low mana value (and low $ cost) Equipment can be pretty effective. If you're going down that route, the main thing I'd advise is to spend whatever you can on the land base, as lands that ETB tapped will slow the deck down significantly.

Key Cards

The key cards for this deck are Bruenor Battlehammer, Sunforger, Mistveil Plains, Colossus Hammer, the different Equipment to load up Bruenor, and the various tutors used to find those key pieces. These cards are our auto-includes as they combine to execute our game plan. For the avoidance of doubt, our game plan is to whack opponents with enough Commander damage to take them out.

Sunforger lets us pay {W}{R} and unattach it to tutor for any instant in the deck, and then cast it for free. This is a very powerful thing to do and will win games.

Mistveil Plains is Sunforger's best friend. For the small price of {W} {T} (plus controlling two white permanents), we can put any card from our graveyard on the bottom of our library. This includes instants we've cast with Sunforger so we can put them back in our library, ready for us to tutor for them and cast them for free again. This means we have access to a repeatable toolbox of instants, which offers some pretty insane value.

Each of these key card areas is discussed in the relevant section below.

Sunforger Package

Show

Sunforger is the Swiss Army knife of this deck. No Boros equipment deck should be without it. It allows us to do all sorts of neat things at instant speed by unattaching it for {W}{R} (we can equip or re-equip it for {0} with Bruenor Battlehammer's static ability as long as it's the first Equipment we attach each turn). Tutoring for red or white instant spells of mana value 4 or under - and them casting them for free - gives us a wealth of options to suit most game situations. Plus it gives Bruenor a hefty power boost of +6/+0. What's not to like?

Here are my favourite Sunforger targets, grouped into categories of use:

Removal:
White is the best colour in Magic for removal. Stroke of Midnight and Generous Gift take care of pretty much anything we want. Chaos Warp is another instant speed answer to nearly everything. Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile exile creatures. Red Elemental Blast thwarts those pesky blue mages by destroying their permanents or countering their spells. From playtesting, I've found we're weak to pillowfort enchantment decks so I've added Tempest of Light for mass enchantment removal.

Protection:
We can't win the game without creatures so we need to protect them. Fortunately we're blessed with plenty of ways to do it. Teferi's Protection is the gold standard but remember you can't recur it with Mistveil Plains. Flare of Fortitude does a pretty good impression of it though and we don't need to worry about the alternate casting cost with Sunforger. Boros Charm and Flawless Maneuver makes our stuff indestructable. Galadriel's Dismissal is nice because we can phase out our creatures to dodge removal, or use it on our opponents' creatures either to stop them attacking or to remove blockers.

Disruption:
As well as being my second favourite Magic art of all time (the MH3 extended art), Orim's Chant stops opposing players casting anything (tip: use it in their upkeep) and/or their creatures attacking. Dawn Charm is a nice versatile little card that prevents combat damage, counters spells that target us, or regenerates a creature. Settle the Wreckage is an amazing instant speed boardwipe that punishes opponents for going all-in with attacks. I'd also like to add Deflecting Palm to catch people with their pants down.

Tutors

Show

We have two different categories of tutor: cards to find Equipment and cards to find Mistveil Plains. Sunforger works as a tutor in its own right and is already discussed in detail in the section above. Here's what you need to know about the tutors.

Finding Equipment:
Whether it's Sunforger to get our utility package going, Colossus Hammer to smash face, Whispersilk Cloak or Trailblazer's Boots to evade blockers, or the Swords of X & Y to protect creatures from colours and do neat things, the Equipment in this deck is what makes it tick. Open the Armory, Enlightened Tutor, Kellan, the Fae-Blooded (the Birthright Boon part), Inventors' Fair and Axgard Armory are generally the ways we'll find those cards. Enlightened Tutor is the pick of the bunch because we can recur it with Sunforger and Mistveil Plains. Urza's Saga is packed with value and finds Colossus Hammer. I also need to pick up a Stoneforge Mystic at some point.

Finding Mistveil Plains:
We run various land tutors to find Mistveil Plains so we can shuffle the cards we cast with Sunforger back into our library, ready to be used again. Fortunately white has some handy creatures that can find non-basic Plains cards (Mistveil Plains has the Plains land type). We use Knight of the White Orchid, Deep Gnome Terramancer and Oreskos Explorer for this purpose. Weathered Wayfarer is reusable and grabs any land, and we have the option of fetch land effects like Arid Mesa and Urza's Cave (these need to be added).

Let's Rank The Swords Of X & Y!

Top 10 lists are always fun. Here's how I'd rank the 10 Swords of X & Y in terms of their usefulness in this deck (best to worst).

Rank 1 - Sword of Feast and Famine: It's not hard to see why most people rate this as the strongest Sword. The discard effect is often surprisingly disruptive but the icing on the cake is untapping our lands when it connects, effectively doubling our mana and giving us more resources to cast stuff or play around with Equipment. Protection from black is great for dodging removal too. Top draw.

Rank 2 - Sword of Fire and Ice: Boros has historically been the weakest colour for card draw so drawing an extra card is great (or even two if the equipped creature has double strike). There's usually something relevant on the battlefield to pick off for 2 damage and, at the very worst, you just point it at someone's face. Red damage sources are everywhere in Commander so protection from red is useful. Another really good Sword.

Rank 3 - Sword of Light and Shadow: I rank this one so highly because black and white are the most common removal colours. Equipping this sword to a creature usually means it's going to stick around. The lifegain ability is meh but I like the creature recursion option as we'll usually have something useful in the graveyard. Pretty good but not quite amazing.

Rank 4 - Sword of Forge and Frontier: One of the newer Swords and I think it's definitely in the top 5. It offers pseudo-card draw with its impulse ability and playing an additional land each turn is rarely a bad thing. The only drawback is the cards it exiles can only be played that turn so unless you use them, you're going to lose them.

Rank 5 - Sword of Sinew and Steel: Two decent removal options here. There will invariably be artifacts you want to take out so that ability's really good (and at the risk of stating the obvious, it doesn't have to be an artifact belonging to the defending player). Planeswalker removal is less relevant but it's handy to have, especially if someone's clogging up the board with a Superfriends deck.

Rank 6 - Sword of War and Peace: As with #3, lifegain is nothing to get excited about but the extra damage this Sword enables can be pretty explosive. Even more so if the equipped creature has double strike. Would probably be higher on this list if we didn't care about Commander damage so much.

Rank 7 - Sword of Body and Mind: We're getting to the less exciting Swords now. It makes an extra 2/2 body, which can be a useful chump blocker, and sometimes the mill effect can be useful but it's risky to fill the graveyard in EDH as there's usually someone who can abuse it. Situationally useful I suppose but nothing to write home about.

Rank 8 - Sword of Once and Future: Another new Sword. Again, the surveil ability can occasionally be situationally helpful (especially if we have Mistveil Plains in play), and we have enough low mana value instants and sorceries that the Snapcaster effect is sometimes relevant. We don't like that any cards that are cast for free are exiled, however.

Rank 9 - Sword of Hearth and Home: Ramping for an extra land is very good but we don't want the blink effect as it unattaches any Equipment that's attached to creatures. A handful of our creatures have ETBs that are worth flickering but there's not enough value here to make it stand out for this particular deck. So basically it's just a Sword of the Animist that grants protection from green and white.

Rank 10 - Sword of Truth and Justice: We're not the sort of deck that cares about +1/+1 counters or proliferate so it's rare for this Sword to be useful for us. Putting counters on Bruenor means we can do Commander damage faster but that's about it. My least favourite sword in this list.

Other Useful Equipment

Our utility belt doesn't just include swords. We have the option of arming Bruenor Battlehammer and friends with some other useful gear. Highlights include:

• Colossus Hammer: Le Grand Fromage. The best Equipment in this deck. Normally the equip cost of {8} makes it prohibitive but in our deck it basically gives Bruenor +12/+10 for the princely investment of {1}. Tutor it up as soon as you can and go to town. Shame it doesn't give trample but you can't have everything, I guess.
• Whispersilk Cloak: Another amazing Equipment. We want it because it makes Bruenor unblockable but the protection is a nice upside. You have to watch for shroud as once it's equipped, you can't target the wearer with other effects. Sequence it all carefully and you'll be fine.
• Trailblazer's Boots: More useful evasion for Bruenor. Nearly every deck in EDH runs nonbasic lands of some description. You're never disappointed to see this.
• Blackblade Reforged: Not quite Colossus Hammer but another good way to power up Bruenor. Gets better as the game goes on.
  
• Lightning Greaves // **Swiftfoot Boots: Haste is useful because Bruenor can start smashing up stuff as soon as he comes down. Each of these is good in different ways. Greaves has the zero equip cost but grants shroud. Boots gives hexproof but costs more to equip. Neither is a huge issue in this deck. Run them both.
  
• Loxodon Warhammer: The other Hammer - and the only Equipment in this list that gives trample. Important for that reason alone. The lifelink is a bonus if you're trying to race other aggressive decks. Has just replaced Sword of the Animist here as two of the Swords of X & Y have ramp abilities.
• Halvar, God of Battle  : Don't forget the flip side of Halvar is an Equipment (Sword of the Realm). You'll almost always want to play the Halvar side as it's much better but there might be some fringe cases when you need another Equipment instead. Worth remembering.

Utility Creatures

You might be wondering why this list runs so many other creatures if it only really cares about Bruenor Battlehammer attacking for Commander damage. There are a few reasons: many of our creatures have useful effects that synergise well with Equipment; others have handy recursion abilities which bring our stuff back if it's removed; and it's always helpful to have other sources of damage if Bruenor's killed so many times that Commander tax makes him unviable. Here's why I've chosen the creatures in this list.

Evasion
Soltari Priest and Soltari Monk are our Plan B if Bruenor gets removed. Although we might see Dauthi Voidwalker from time to time, creatures with shadow are pretty rare so these two little guys are effectively unblockable. Depending on the pod we're in, protection from black or from red ranges from annoying to lethal, so that's an added bonus. If Bruenor's not around, stick as much Equipment on them as you can and watch them go.

Recursion
The reality of playing this deck is opponents are going to target our stuff. Koll, the Forgemaster, Serra Paragon, Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle and Tiana, Ship's Caretaker allow us to bring creatures or equipment back from the graveyard. Forge Anew has a similar sort of effect but it's not a creature. If our stuff's exiled though, we can't get it back so watch out for Farewell.

Efficiency
One of the reasons Boros is the best colour combination for equipment is because it has cards that reduce the cost of casting or attaching Equipment cards - or avoiding paying those cost altogether. We use Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist, Bladegraft Aspirant, Danitha Capashen, Paragon, Leonin Shikari and Puresteel Paladin for these purposes. Again, Forge Anew and Sigarda's Aid fulfil similar roles but they're enchantments, not creatures.

Card Draw
Boros used to be the worst colours for drawing cards but things are a bit better now. As well as Esper Sentinel, we have an number of Equipment-based card draw effects which they synergise well with the rest of the deck. Creatures we use this way are Akiri, Fearless Voyager (who also has a helpful protection ability), Puresteel Paladin and Sram, Senior Edificer.

Other
Rebbec, Architect of Ascension is a nice way to protect our Equipment. Stick Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots on her and it's much harder to target our artifacts. Reyav, Master Smith gives equipped creatures double strike which can be incredible if Bruenor Battlehammer's tooled up and ready to attack. Magda, Brazen Outlaw has a helpful ramp ability when Bruenor attacks and the buff she gives can be relevant for Commander damage.

Gameplay

Show

Here are some thoughts about playing the deck, the best strategies to employ and how to get the best value from its cards. I'll add to this section as I play more games and become more experienced.

We are a deck that's pretty low to the ground. Around 90% of our non-land cards are mana value 3 or under, we means we can get going quickly without needing to ramp into lots of lands. We can play cheap Equipment in the early turns, ready to attach the first one for {0} to Bruenor Battlehammer when he hits the board in order to start swinging the next turn (or straight away if he's equipped with Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots).

Obviously this is game-dependent but I would first prioritise killing opponents who either (a) might have mass artifact removal, or (b) could prevent you winning with combat damage. This isn't an insta-win combo deck or the sort of build that removes multiple players at once, so you're going to have to make smart choices about who the biggest threat is. Once you've made that decision, go for the throat. One or two swings with Bruenor should do it, especially if he has protection from the relevant colours or is unblockable.

As soon as you start dealing large amounts of Commander damage (usually around the time Bruenor connects with two or more Equipment attached), you paint a pretty big target in your back. That means you usually want to find Sunforger pretty quickly as it's how you'll protect your board or avoid taking large amounts of combat damage when people start swinging at you.

Shroud effects from Lightning Greaves and Whispersilk Cloak can make attaching Equipment a bit clunky as they mean you can't target those creatures with equip abilities. Sequencing becomes important in these instances as you have to make efficient use of your mana to attach and reattach Equipment in the right order as needed. You've always got Bruenor's {0} equip ability to fall back on, and cards like Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist, Bladegraft Aspirant, Puresteel Paladin or Halvar, God of Battle   either reduce or remove equip costs.

Upcoming Changes

There are a few changes I'd like to make to further optimise the deck. Most of the card selections are locked so it's now about speeding it up a bit. I want to add Mana Vault to complete its fast mana package, to replace The Irencrag. I'm not sure how to fit it in but I'd like to include Magnetic Theft too.
