Welcome to my primer for "Dreamcatcher", a Dimir Faeries deck for casual Commander.

Maybe it’s because I’m a Brit, and Celtic mythology is part of our heritage, but I’ve always been intrigued by faeries in MtG. Their depiction in Magic lore is far removed from stereotypical Disney cartoons, and far more akin to the wicked, cruel creatures that haunted the darkness in pagan folklore, who crossed the veil between the real world and the otherworld to wreak havoc on unsuspecting victims. They perfectly reflect the Dimir colour identity in Magic, combining blue’s search for knowledge with black’s selfishness and greed. They slip to and from the shadows, and harness the power of forbidden places and dark arts. They’re elusive, mysterious and manipulative, and have been an integral part of the Llorwyn and Eldraine sets. And they’re one of my favourite tribes of all time.

While Dimir Faeries decks have dominated various competitive formats in Magic’s history, Faeries in EDH isn’t really seen as one of the stronger tribes. This is mostly down to card selection: there aren’t many viable Faerie commanders and, similarly, there are relatively few strong cards with the Faerie creature type to form the backbone of a tribal deck. Things have changed however with the release of Wilds of Eldraine and a new Commander precon, and we have a bunch of upgrades for the weaker creatures in our list.

In my opinion, U/B Faeries works best as a tempo deck that relies on subtlety and trickery instead of attacking with hordes of creatures. It plays well at instant speed, disrupting opponents’ board states while gradually amassing threats of its own until it’s ready to take over the board. It delights in thwarting enemies’ plans and likes to play the long game, needling away with interaction and removal before delivering the killing blow.

The Commander for ‘Dreamcatcher’, my Faeries deck, is Oona, Queen of the Fae. She’s unquestionably a bomb card and is expensive to put into play (especially with multiple instances of commander tax), but she’s amazing at generating threats and can take over the game quickly if the tokens she produces are paired with lord or pump effects. Unlike some Oona builds, this deck doesn’t go all-in on a mill strategy, but instead seeks to use her ability to augment some of the better creatures from the Faerie tribe. The result is a deck that’s surprisingly effective and is a lot of fun to play.

Power Level

I categorise decks in my collection according to four tiers of power, from 1 (most powerful) to 4 (least powerful):

Tier 1: Higher powered decks with fast mana, free spells, and infinite combos or instant wins that are searchable with tutors.
Tier 2: Well tuned decks which may have infinite combos or instant wins that are searchable with tutors, but not many fast mana sources and/or free spells.
Tier 3: Reasonably well tuned casual decks that are capable of powerful plays. May occasionally have infinite combos or instant wins but don't generally use tutors to find them.
Tier 4: Lower powered or linear decks, weak enough to play against other casual decks.

I would classify this as one of my Tier 2 decks. It's fairly well tuned and features optimised card selections in most categories, including some fast mana. It has an infinite combo win condition, with the combo pieces able to be found with a couple of different tutor cards. However - and despite its recent power boost - Faeries still isn't one of the strongest tribes and it's quite slow to get going, which means it can get outclassed by faster, more competitive decks. Its win rate at the moment is 50%.

In terms of WotC's new EDH power brackets, I think this list would be classified as Bracket 4. It has half a dozen game-changer cards (Rhystic StudyGC, Ancient TombGC, Mana VaultGC, Cyclonic RiftGC, Fierce GuardianshipGC, Demonic TutorGC and Vampiric TutorGC), which definitely pushes it out of Bracket 3 territory. In the unlikely event that Mana Crypt and Jeweled Lotus get unbanned, they'd be additional GC cards I'd add here.

Budget

The average price for this deck on Card Kingdom is over $600. It's not really a budget list and I've invested in some cards to make it as strong as possible. In itself however, Faeries isn't an expensive archetype to build and it's absolutely viable to build a good Faerie tribal deck on a budget, as many of the key pieces are very cheap. The most expensive cards are the tutors (Demonic TutorGC, Vampiric TutorGC) and some of the other premium choices like Cavern of Souls, Fierce GuardianshipGC, Bitterblossom, Cyclonic RiftGC etc.

You'll also notice I'm running a handful of proxies for some of the more expensive cards eg. Ancient TombGC, Rhystic StudyGC, Three Tree City, Mana VaultGC, Damnation, Volrath's Stronghold, Force of Negation etc. I have multiple copies of each of those cards in various other decks so I'm using proxies to keep the cost down and avoid swapping cards between different builds.

Routes to Victory

This deck’s main route to victory is to generate Faeries – either by playing creatures or putting tokens into play with Oona, Queen of the Fae and Bitterblossom - while keeping the board clear of opposing threats using removal and countermagic. We have various lord effects to give our Faeries a bit more punch. It also has a couple of other bomb cards, Exsanguinate and Cyclonic RiftGC, to support this strategy, either of which can easily be found with Demonic TutorGC or Vampiric TutorGC.

We also have a combo plan. Oona, Queen of the Fae goes infinite with Nyx Lotus and Filigree Sages, allowing us to win on the spot by milling all our opponents’ libraries at once.

The Sprite Stuff

As a tribal deck, we seek to exploit efficiencies and synergies from the Faerie creature type. Here are our highlights:

• Alela, Cunning Conqueror: Encapsulates what Faeries do best: making other Faeries and becoming an annoyance for opponents by goading their creatures. We're quite often playing at instant speed in other players' turns so she normally creates plenty of tokens.
• Archmage of Echoes: Its CMC of 5 is higher than I'd like but being able to duplicate the (nonlegendary) Faeries we cast is quite useful for this deck. Ward {2} makes it a bit more tricky to remove.
• Blightwing Bandit: Deathtouch is useful here as it discourages other players from attacking us. Potentially being able to cast their spells is also fun too.
• Brazen Borrower: Both modes are perfect for this build. Bouncing opposing threats (or resetting Glen Elendra Archmage is a useful Adventure spell and a 3/1 flying body with flash is not to be sniffed at. It's come down a lot in $$ price too.
• Faerie Bladecrafter: Obviously works best when we're able to create lots of Faerie tokens as it can become a hefty flying threat in those circumstances. Opponents will be reluctant to destroy it too as it comes with a sting in the tail.
• Faerie Harbinger: Tutors for our most useful Faerie. Not much more to say other than Scion of Oona and Sower of Temptation are often good targets.
• Faerie Mastermind: One of the more recent staples for a Faeries list. Will draw us a lot of cards throughout a typical EDH game.
• Glen Elendra Archmage: We don't have many ways of exploiting its persist ability (other than bouncing it back to our hand) but even if we don't, a repeatable Negate on a flying body is very useful. Staple for Faeries builds.
• Glen Elendra Liege: A handy lord effect to give our lil' Faeries a bit more punch. Useful for go-wide strategies.
• High Fae Trickster: Playing our spells at instant speed is exactly what we want to be doing. Giving that ability to everything we cast is very strong. Another new staple.
• Hypnotic Sprite: Similar to Brazen Borrower. Its counterspell mode is situationally useful and once we've done that, we still cast it as another flying threat.
• Knacksaw Clique: Nice little {UNTAP} effect that lets us use other people's cards. Note the wording is "you may play that card" which means we can have their lands too.
• Mocking Sprite: Helps with efficiency by making our instants and sorceries cost less. Very good for our counterspells.
• Nymris, Oona's Trickster: In my top 3 of Magic card artworks (along with Adarkar Wastes and Orim's Chant). Otherwise another useful loot ability and his 1/6 stats mean he's often a good blocker.
• Obyra, Dreaming Duelist: I keep wondering whether she should replace Oona, Queen of the Fae as the Commander for this deck. She's already strong in the 99 and her incremental damage trigger can soon add up.
• Oona's Blackguard: Plenty of our Faeries have the Rogue creature type so it can be a nice little power boost. Making our opponents discard cards is often useful too.
• Scion of Oona: One of the strongest Faeries for this list. Giving all our Faeries shroud is huge. Flashing it in at the right time can be game-changing.
• Shadow Puppeteers: Very expensive to cast at {6}{U} but functions as an excellent finisher card when we have lots of flying threats. If it survives a turn cycle then our opponents will likely have big problems.
• Sower of Temptation: It's always fun to steal one of our opponents' best creatures. I love the flavour text too.
• Spellscorn Coven: Similar principle to Brazen Borrower and Hypnotic Sprite. I like its versalitity.
• Spellstutter Sprite: An old-school all-star from the old Faeries days in Standard. A useful Counterspell on a body that we can bounce back to hand.
• Talion, the Kindly Lord: Another potential Commander for Faeries lists. I can see why: he's an excellent value engine. I guess you probably choose {2} or {3} for most casual games.
• Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor: Yet another great value engine and a potential alternate Commander. If we ran more sacrifice outlets I'd probably swap him for Oona, Queen of the Fae.
• Voracious Tome-Skimmer: Has just replaced Likeness Looter. Another useful source of card drawn that suits our tempo strategy very well.

Supporting Creatures

Although it's definitely a tribal deck, we don't just run Faeries in this list. Here's a list of the other creatures in the deck and why they've been chosen.

• Filigree Sages: You might be wondering why this slightly obscure artifact creature is included in a Faeries list. The reason is simple: it combines with Nyx Lotus to form an infinite mana combo that can be used to power infinite Oona mill activations or an arbitrarily large Exsanguinate. I've outlined the steps to execute the combo in the "Playing the Deck" section below.
• Notion ThiefGC: This has recently replaced Dire Undercurrents, which I found a bit clunky. The rationale for including it is to flash it in and catch opponents with their pants down, drawing us a bunch of cards and blanking their additional draws. I wish it had the Faerie creature type but at least it's a Rogue, so it synergises with Notorious Throng.
• Opposition AgentGC: Another useful Rogue. Speaks for itself at higher powered tables by thwarting opponents' tutoring plans. Perfect for this deck.
• Roaming Throne: Similar to Metallic Mimic, it's not strictly a Faerie but becomes that creature type as soon as it ETBs. An important new staple for kindred decks like this, as it doubles all our Faerie triggers.
• Sire of Stagnation: This creature is a card advantage monster. I try to play it in most of my UB/x decks as it's insane in multiplayer games. The only drawback I've found is it tends to be a removal magnet but any kill spell that's used on it is one fewer for Oona and co.
• Tide Skimmer: Pretty much all our Faeries have flying so this little bird is a handy way to drawing extra cards when we attack. Don't forget it counts itself for its triggered ability.

Other Card Categories

To support our Faerie swarm, we have a number of other key cards that I've bracketed into different categories. Our goal is to be a balanced tempo deck that can compete at most casual tables and have a fighting chance against a variety of opponents.

Card Draw & Tutors
NecropotenceGC, Mystic Remora, Black Market Connections, Sire of Stagnation, Notion ThiefGC and Rhystic StudyGC are our main sources of repeatable card draw. Talion, the Kindly Lord and Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor can also draw us cards. I've noticed this deck is missing Bonders' Enclave and War Room, which I try to include in most of my two colour builds where relevant. I'll add them at some point.

We also have a couple of (proxied) tutors to help draw the right cards at the right time: Demonic TutorGC and Vampiric TutorGC (they're proxied because I have multiple copies included in various other decks). Faerie Harbinger is a more restrictive tutor but she finds specific Faeries if needed.

Counterspells
Our tempo-based approach is augmented by a package of versatile counterspells. We run several "free" sources of countermagic: Fierce GuardianshipGC, Force of Negation and Flare of Denial. Alongside those we have other efficient counters such as Counterspell, Mana Drain, Arcane Denial, Mana Sculpt and Swan Song.

Removal
Dimir colours are pretty good for removal although artifacts are a bit of a blind spot. I'll dig out an extra copy of Deadly Rollick and add it here, to go with Withering Torment, Resculpt and Feed the Swarm. In addition to our spot removal, we have access to several boardwipes: Damnation, Toxic Deluge and Kindred Dominance. Each of these can be helpful reset buttons if we fall behind with creatures on the board.

Ramp
The mana curve for this deck is higher than I'd like it to be. I've had games where I've been stuck with a hand full of higher costed Faeries and the deck just feels a bit clunky. It doesn't help that many of our Faeries are costed at 4MV or higher. To counteract this, I've included some of the most efficient ramp lands and spells in the format: Mana VaultGC, Sol Ring, Sword of the Animist, Dark Ritual, Ancient TombGC and Tree Tree City. Other useful mana rocks that support our game plan are Arcane Signet and Thought Vessel.

Finishers
We run a few powerful cards that can be considered game-enders or finishers in their own right. These are as follows:

• Coat of Arms: Our little Faeries don't pack much of a punch individually but this pumps them to become much bigger threats. Useful for when we want to go wide to finish off opponents when we're on our winning-with-combat plan.
• Cyclonic RiftGC: I could've included this in the removal/boardwipes section but this is also a classic game-ender, clearing the board of opposing permanents so we can attack unimpeded. Or we can use it defensively if other players are trying take us out.
• Exsanguinate: Mainly included as a payoff for our infinite mana combo but it can sometimes be enough late in the game if we have enough resources. Just watch out for counters/redirects and have countermagic ready if needed.
• Notorious Throng: Another neat combat trick. We usually want to save it for when we can pay its prowl cost, which is usually fairly achieveable with the various Rogues we run.

Playing the Deck

I’ve played quite a few games with this deck and it’s definitely been one of my more successful builds. Here are some of the things I’ve learned from those games.

- We play the long game. We’re not a hyper-aggressive creature deck that quickly overwhelms its opponents through sheer numbers. Our creature density is too low and we don’t have a lot of early plays to put pressure on our enemies. We’re definitely one of those decks that gets stronger as the game goes on and, while we might not have a horde of creatures in the early game, we’re very good at protecting our board with counterspells and ensuring we build slowly and steadily over the course of the game.

- Our tribal boosts help a lot. Because we don’t have the largest pool of strong creatures to choose from, we can dedicate more slots in our 100 to buff and lord effects. While it’s rare that we can go wide (unless Bitterblossom, Oona, Queen of the Fae, or Notorious Throng can generate a lot of tokens), the creatures we have can often get buffed to the point where they’re unmanagable. Coat of Arms puts in some serious work for this deck, alongside lord effects like Glen Elendra Liege, Metallic Mimic and Scion of Oona.

- Oona is a target. She’s not quite a kill on sight commander but opposing players fear and respect her, and will seek to remove her whenever they can. In my experience, she doesn’t tend to stick around – if you can get two or three decent activations out of her, you’re doing quite well – but fortunately we’re not the sort of deck that needs its commander to win. I think of her as the icing on the cake: if we get to use her then happy days, but the game is definitely not lost if her casting cost becomes prohibitive because of commander tax.

- Card advantage is one of our key strengths. We have numerous ways to draw extra cards, which means we can often outlast other decks when we play the long game. NecropotenceGC, Mystic Remora, Black Market Connections, Notion ThiefGC and Rhystic StudyGC are fantastic sources of repeatable card draw. We might not always pack the biggest punch with our creatures but when we're continuously replenishing our hand with new resources, we can gain a lot of incremental card advantage over our opponents.

- Use countermagic carefully. We have about a dozen different sources of countermagic, which is enough to keep our opponents on their toes, but we have to be selective. When playing this deck, I tend to save countermagic for protecting our team (ie. when someone boardwipes when we have plenty of creatures in play, and we can’t save them with bounce effects); or when a player crosses the line from “doing their thing” to “about to win the game”.

It should also be noted that we're particularly vulnerable to artifacts. As things stand, we don't currently have any ways of dealing with artifacts once they hit the battlefield. Because of this, I often find myself holding countermagic specifically for this purpose, as we can't always rely on other players to deal with those threats for us. Adding Resculpt and Strix Serenade will help a bit, but it's definitely still an Achilles heel.

- We love playing at instant speed. Related to the last point, as a tempo deck we like playing at instant speed. Plenty of our Faeries have flash so it’s always worth leaving mana open so we can play them at the least convenient times for our enemies. Scion of Oona is our instant-speed all-star for its lord effects and for its ability to give other Faeries shroud.

- We have a neat infinite combo. Oona, Queen of the Fae, Filigree Sages and Nyx Lotus can combine to make an infinite mill combo. Here's how it works:

1. All permanents must be on the battlefield with {2}{U} available.
2. Tap Nyx Lotus for {U}{U}{U}{U}
3. Activate Filigree Sages to untap Nyx Lotus.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 to make infinite blue mana, powering Oona, Queen of the Fae's mill ability on all opponents.

Upcoming Changes

Thanks for checking out this primer :) Having a favourite Commander deck is like picking a favourite child but this is one of my top decks of the 40 in my collection. It's now in its final form and I'm not looking to make any changes, unless WotC prints new more powerful Faeries, or if any new Dimir staples come out. I can't recommend this build enough as a fun, potentially very powerful tribal build that suits an aggro-tempo play style perfectly. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I do.
