Commander / EDH BR (Rakdos) Competitive Storm

Rakdos storm is probably my dream deck, but for the longest time it suffered from not having a viable commander. Most people think that Rakdos storm is gimmicky/janky, but I believe that it can be made into a competitive deck. It may not have the variability and interaction that most people look for in EDH, but it is extremely satisfying to storm off in these colors.
Xantcha, Sleeper Agent is the miracle of Rakdos Storm. Previous BR commanders in this theme were Rakdos, Lord of Riots for the reduced generic mana cost of creatures, Lyzolda, the Blood Witch for the low mana cost, damage, and draw effects, and Dragonlord Kolaghan for the haste effects on all creatures. Notice that these alternative options are all focused on the theme of creatures. Focusing on creatures is very difficult and unreliable for the purpose of this deck. Xantcha is the perfect commander because she is cheap, feints a politics/group-hug-slug deck, and has a COLORLESS mana outlet to both deal damage and draw a card. (Don't worry about other people drawing cards from her; they will only get one chance to use her ability before the game is over)

Strengths

  1. Early game competitive
  2. Turn 3 wins
  3. It doubles as a brief politics deck until your opponents realize what is happening.

Weaknesses

  1. Bad against blue control decks (The storm count/wincons won't suffer, but getting ad nauseam counterspelled turn 3 will hurt)
  2. Bad against early game aggro decks that focus on dealing damage with hasted creatures (loosing life means loosing card draw in black, especially with Ad Nauseam, Necropotence, and Necrologia

Both of these weaknesses can be reduced by your style of gameplay. Keep track of your opponent's mana usage and interest in the game.

Your goal is to cast ad nauseam as early as possible. The deck runs plenty of 0 CMC sources to obtain either red or black mana in case you finish casting ad nauseam with 0 floating mana, but I do not recommend relying on this strategy if you are in a safe position. If you can, wait one more turn (turn 3-->4-->5) before attempting to begin the combo. Use your judgement when casting ad nauseam. I typically find myself in the range of 6-10 life remaining after using it. Most of the black tutors are being run for the sole purpose of bringing ad nauseam out early.

You should attempt to build up the CMC chain of ritual cards while maintaining the ability to float one mana of each color.

In most cases you will find that you have an abundance of red mana floating in your mana pool. If the combo begins to fail or you find yourself struggling, dump your red mana into Xantcha to deal 2 damage at a time and draw a card. She should pull you through the barrier and give you enough cards to continue the combo; meanwhile, you will accidently kill someone with the instances of 2 damage at a time.

Aetherflux, Tendrils of Agony, and Guttersnipe should be able to kill on their own due to the high storm count. Grapeshot is bit slower, but it should also be able to finish off any stragglers after casting any of the cards in "Recur" category. Young Pyromancer is useful because of the early game body and protection, but it won't be your finisher in most combos.

Out of all of the "Recur" cards in the deck, there is one card that is worth a special remark. Mizzix's Mastery is a recursion card that both CASTS a copy of a card from your graveyard and makes the payment free. Additionally, the overload ability allows you to CAST EACH instant and sorcery in your graveyard. This also means that you can choose how to place the copies on the stack, allowing you to significantly increase your storm count before resolving that final Tendrils of Agony or Grapeshot

What Should Be In My Opening Hand?

You will always need at least 2 lands in your opening hand. A tutor is necessary if you do not have ad nauseam, necropotence, or necrologia in your opening hand.

Everything else should be focused on either giving more mana/reducing costs or contributing to a storm count.

That is okay! This game just got a lot harder, but you can still combo off. You will need to focus on using the black tutors to fetch out cards like Necropotence, Necrologia, and Insidious Dreams. These methods are A LOT slower and much more dangerous. If you can, fetch for Thought Vessel or a Reliquary Tower to prevent yourself from having to discard your whole hand. If you can't, discard the cards that you know you can use effeciently from the graveyard (for non-necropotence draw power); there are plenty of "Recur" cards in the deck. If you are using necropotence with handsize limitations, make sure to keep the 0 CMC artifacts, rituals, and wincon cards; exile the recursion cards and lands.
This is storm! The whole deck is a combo! In all seriousness, the deck really is a combo. Besides the previously mentioned Mizzix's Mastery, Bonus Round combined with any of the rituals is a quick way to build up plenty of mana to dump into Xantcha, especially with Inner Fire and recursion cards.
I'll update Card Choices as I recieve more commentary and questions.

Why Not Use...?

Gilded Lotus - Too high of a CMC. There are better cards to mana fix red floating into black mana. It hinders the deck more because of the tendency to rely on ad nauseam.

Reforge the Soul - Too high of a CMC. Winds of Change is way better for our purposes. Miracle is unreliable, and we should hardly ever need wheel effects in the first place.

Toxic Deluge and other black removal/board wipe - Field wipes are only needed if the deck has failed to successfuly storm to victory. Also, we need every bit of life.

Ricochet Trap - The deck is lacking in ability to stop blue control decks; however, the 4 CMC is too high for this deck. Any cards that are 4 CMC are pretty much reserved for win conditions or cards that set up the win conditions. (Yes, it has an alternate cost, but we don't want to run into the issue of loosing life from this card's CMC) My #1 goal is staying at ~2.00CMC or less

Whipflare - This card has a few downsides for this deck. Overall, we want to be storming-off before having to deal with the field state of other players. This card hurts 2 of our only creature win conditions, has a higher CMC than Lightning Bolt, and doesn't hit artifact creatures (which are fairly common in EDH).

Burnout - In my opinion this is a slightly worse version of Pyroblast or Red Elemental Blast. We will typically need a counterspell in cases where we are casting a high mana cost draw spell, meaning that the difference of 1 mana can be gamebreaking when trying to storm off. Additionally, if the card is successfully casted, then drawing one more card will not make much of a difference. Finally, this card is completely useless when contributing towards the storm count if no one tries playing a blue instant during our turn. With Pyroblast & Red Elemental Blast we have the ability to target blue permanents to increase the storm count at will.

Why Am I Using...?

Lightning Bolt - Compared to alternative early game answers for aggro decks, I personally prefer lightning bolt. Although this card only hits 1 creature, the 3 damage is typically enough to halt the lifeloss from aggro decks I.E. "lord" creatures(Adaptive Automaton & Metallic Mimic), multipliers (The Notorious Krenko, Mob Boss & Marrow-Gnawer), and haste/attack threats(Alesha, Who Smiles at Death & Kaalia of the Vast). Additionally a fair amount of high tier commanders are killed by lightning bolt, like: Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge, Thrasios, Triton Hero, Tymna the Weaver, Animar, Soul of Elements, Arcum Dagsson, Captain Sisay, Edric, Spymaster of Trest, Grand Arbiter Augustin IV, Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, Sidisi, Brood Tyrant, and Yisan, the Wanderer Bard. Yes, there are better options for mass damage, but I prefer the lower CMC. This deck has to maintain a low mana curve if it wants to successfully storm. Also, with the influx of Planeswalker commanders, this card has become even more important.

Sideboard Cards/Cards Being Currently Play-tested

If there are any suggestions for cards that should be removed to replace with these, please let me know.

Boseiju, Who Shelters All - I love the versatility of this card. It helps the deck ensure the casting of draw power cards and finishers that do not have storm. However, I am not entirely convinced. The card has an expensive life-loss effect, and most importantly, we loose out on colored mana in the early game. Typically, the deck needs at least 1 land that produces red mana and 2-3 lands that produce black mana. In combination with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth this card would be a definite "yes". However, I will need to playtest the consistency of the deck with this card included.

Slaughter Pact - YES! 0 CMC. It contributes to storm count. It also removes annoying creatures with control abilities. The payment on the next upkeep is not too important for us, as most wins will occur during our main phase. The upkeep payment will only be relevant in cases where we might want to be casting ad nauseam at instant speed/delays the casting of ad nauseam. I am currently looking for a card to remove for this.

Abrade - This card will most likely not make it into the deck; however, I will play-test it for now. If the competitive EDH decks that I run into tend to run early game artifacts that influence my success/ability to storm, then I will probably include it.

Pyroclasm - This is a better version of Whipflare for the purposes of this deck. It is an answer for early game aggro decks, but it needs to be play-tested first.

Imp's Mischief - I love this card in Toshiro Umezawa. It is a lower mana cost alternative to dealing with control decks at the downside of loosing life equal to the CMC of the spell that is targeted. It will almost always be used to counterspell a counterspell in this deck.

Pyroblast & Red Elemental Blast - These cards will most likely make it into the deck. They are the BEST option for dealing with blue control and early game counterspells. I am currently deciding which cards must be removed to include these two. The only downside to them is that they won't be able to contribute to the storm count if no players on the table are playing blue, but most of the time we should be able to destroy a blue permanent to increase the storm count.

More Coming Soon! I'm hoping to bring it to some local stores during FNM. Some stores around my area hold EDH tournaments. (I'll update)
