Myojin of Blooming Jankpiles

Commander / EDH Mono-White

Welcome to probably one of the most jank, slow, casual (despite that stat to the right) builds in Commander: Myojin of Blooming Dawn.

With this deck, we actually want to USE our commander to create a small army, and then possibly a large one, to overwhelm our opponents. This isn't the only path to victory, but let's cover this first.

First, we need ramp and let's face it, this is Mono White. A number cards can help us get there though. Wayfarer's Bauble, Tithe, Environmental Sciences, Thaumatic Compass  , The Restoration of Eiganjo  , The Birth of Meletis, these among others will help us find the lands and mana sources we need. Angel of the Ruins and Sunblade Samurai should also be cycled early in the game for those plains card. I also want to mention the inclusion of Lotus Field here, because it is used to turn on the effects where we need less lands than our opponents to search for lands. Make no mistake, NOTHING happens with the Myojin without these, so if you make cuts, it's not in this section.

I also avoided a few things like Pearl Medallion and Helm of Awakening. In testing, they didn't help out as much to get the Myojin down, but Oketra's Monument, which I'll cover later, is a must include. Here I will also mention the includes of Gauntlet of Power and Caged Sun. These can really help the deck, but if you lose them, don't feel too bad about it. Protecting the Myojin is all the matters. You could also add Extraplanar Lens if you want, especially with snow lands.

Honorary mention to Gift of Estates. It would be on the list, but it is bugged on MTGO, where you can find a gameplay video of this deck under DurdleMTG.

Even with the "ramp" package, this deck will likely only get the Myojin of Blooming Dawn out on turn seven, but that's fine. What we want when the happens are 2-3, if able, of the "rescue" cards in hand to return the Myojin to our hand. These include Scapegoat, Light the Way, Whitemane Lion, Jeskai Barricade, Stonecloaker, and Stormfront Riders. There are 2-3 other cards that also do this, and ideally we want 2 in hand and mana up for them when we cast the Moyjin. Many of them have flash, with the Whitemane Lion being the cream of the crop here. If you can, you save the Lion for later.

While lands are put onto the battlefield, we have other spells we can play in the meantime. Some, like Spear of Heliod and Angel of Jubilation can deter attackers and halt some strategies from going off. They also provide an anthem effect, +1/+1, to all of our creatures, which will be important when we create our army of (for some reason colorless) spirits. The Immortal Sun gives the +1/+1 bonus to all our creatures as well. Our mana doubling effects in Gauntlet of Power and Caged Sun also provide +1/+1, but to only White creatures.

Keeper of the Accord and Ao, the Dawn Sky are more cards we can drop in anticipation of the Myojin's arrival, providing extra defense and possible boosts to power later. Esper Sentinel, Endless Atlas, Mangara, the Diplomat, Mentor of the Meek, and Welcoming Vampire will provide us with other sources of card draw to keep momentum and hitting those land drops after we cast our commander because we will need them then too, along with other "rescue" cards.

Board wipes also help us out here to get to turn 7-9. Phyrexian Rebirth, Austere Command, Fumigate, Slash the Ranks, Settle the Wreckage and Winds of Abandon all helps maintain us at a sufficient life total when it's time to cast our commander. Each wipe was chosen for a specific reason; Phyrexian Rebirth to wipe the board and have a potentially large blocker, and possible Scapegoat target, Austere Command for flexibility and getting rid of things like Ghostly Prison and Moat, Fumigate to help heal us both before AND after the Myojin, Slash the Ranks so we can use the Myojin's ability to swiftly outnumber our opponents, Settle the Wreckage to save ourselves from aggressive, hard hitting decks, and Winds of Abandon, which can hit one target we don't control, or all the creatures we don't control. IN using these, keep track of how many cards are in each hand to gauge recovery. This deck needs A LOT of set up, and opponents able to recovery hamper all the work we do.

Likewise, these wipes were chosen with the Myojin in mind as well. None of them can affect our commander when it's indestructible, but that comes a turn or two after we cast them, and they can all be cast before our commander to ready the board state. There are advantages to being a slower deck.

Now, we come to casting our commander. At 8 mana, it is an expensive investment. We need to be ready to defend our position on the table. Having the Flash enabled "rescue" creature or instant effects in hand, and having the mana for them, is a must to protect against removal. Remember, the Myojin of Blooming Dawn DOES NOT have an indestructibility counter unless it is cast from our hand. "Rescuing" it and then recasting it is our only option outside of Command Beacon and Sun Titan interactions. Once our commander is in play, leave it there for as long as you can until the end step of the player before you. Then, hit that rescue button and return it to your hand. Cast it from you hand, game permitting, on your turn, and it will be indestructible. At minimum without considering Lotus Field, who should be able to then, at a whim, create 8 1/1 spirits. Often times I found this number to vary between 10 and 14.

Tips and Tricks

Do not hesitate to plains cycle Angel of the Ruins for land. You need the land more than you need the angel.

Karn's Bastion is a good way to save on rescue creatures and effects by simply adding another indestructiblity counter to the Myojin. You then remove a counter from it to increase your army size without sacrificing its safety. It also works well with Cathars' Crusade and if you choose to add it, Sword of Truth and Justice.

While not in the deck you could add something like Ajani's Presence or Daxos, Blessed by the Sun and similar to abuse the Whitemane Lion and Oketra's Monument interaction for life gain.

Likewise, having both the Monument and Stormfront Riders out and casting Whitemane Lion over and over again will produce even more tokens.

Annointed Procession was a concession for monetary reasons, but it could have a place in the deck. I'd rather have the Smothering Tithe, so I chose one or the other.

Panharmonicon would also find a home here if you go more creature heavy with the build, and the deck would need more ETBs to make its inclusion viable.

A combo that you can put in the deck with minimal changes is: Whitemane Lion + Oketra's Monument + Phyrexian Altar for infinite creature casting (it only works with Whitemane). You add a Requiem Angel make infinite FLYING spirits what are WHITE (Myojin makes colorless 1/1 groundlings), or God-Eternal Oketra make a bunch of 4/4s. You would need to add the Phyrexian Altar (which might be good for some emergency mana) for either combo line and Requiem Angel to the list otherwise.

Some intersting cards may include:

Eldrazi Monument, because it does gives evasion to our colorless spirits and protects our board state. I was leery of adding it to the deck with all the set up I had to do, so I didn't, but it may work fine in here and my fears be unfounded.

Throne of the God-Pharaoh, which would help hits people that can't be hit with combat damage. This deck is very singular in its focus, and a well timed Cyclonic Rift or Sphere of Safety could spell disaster.
