Maybeboard

just a goodstuff illuna deck.

Used to do Shapeshifter stuff, but it's a lot less fun since it doesnt get flying/trample when you morph on to it. it's a little too clunky.

Current potential cuts:

Scroll Rack (cut 6/3/20): This deck just doesn't have enough raw card draw to really make it worth it. It's felt pretty lackluster so far. It sets up plays with Illuna's mutate ability but its a little slow and the deck's curve is low so it never saves all that much mana.

Transmute Artifact: Only really here to get Birthing Pod. Might be better with a better artifact count, or more artifact creatures that do stuff when they die. If Birthing Pod went, this very likely would as well.

Gaea's Cradle Sounds crazy, right? I've been cutting cheap mana dorks and other utility dudes for non-permanents that do similar things to get better average value from Illuna/Starix. Sometimes it's really good (as one would expect) but because I've been trimming utility creatures it hasn't been nearly as good as it could be (I'm also brewing a Karador deck where it would fit much better, so it's almost guaranteed to get cut at some point).

Birthing Pod Same reasoning as Gaea's Cradle above.

Manascape Refractor A lot of good utility lands have been getting cut, causing this to loose a lot of value.

changes:

Squee, Goblin Nabob -> Mind's Eye Trying a new approach to value. The Squee value train never really got where I wanted to go, and 5 mana goodstuff permanents feel like a good place to be. Also gives me another good card to get with Transmute Artifact when I don't have the board to use Birthing Pod.

Barrin, Master Wizard -> Skyshroud Claim More ramp, simple as. Barrin was really in here for Squee. Maybe he can come back in, but I think points where I had permanents I could afford to sac to use his ability I was already in a sort of 'win-more' state anyway, so he was never terribly useful on his own.

Llanowar Elves -> Nature's Lore Joraga Treespeaker -> Cultivate These are just for the sake of Illuna's ability. Not as many good T1 plays now but it helps to not have so many cheap permanents to whiff with Illuna or Auspicious Starix.

Volrath's Shapeshifter -> Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

I guess this was always going to happen. Oh well. Shapeshifter just didn't have enough synergy after cutting the combo package. It would be a lot better if it worked like the original wording says, but it doesn't. Ugin is strong and I think since the deck is a little more casual, it really needs some more top end value engines. Ugin generates value and can be a really good wrath at the same time.

Flowstone Hellion -> Dockside Extortionist

Old combo piece for some of the best red ramp. There's lots of artifacts at my table also so he routinely generates oodles of mana.

Geier Reach Sanitarium -> Zealous Conscripts

Last of the Shapeshifter combo cards. Cutting a land is fine even though we've increased our curve a bit, 35 lands with how much ramp this deck has is quite a bit (I may cut another at some point). Zealous Conscripts combos with Kiki-Jiki and steals fun stuff.

Intuition -> Fire / Ice

Intuition always felt excessively slow even though it's an instant. To get what you need you usually have to have 3 of the same effect in a deck; often I only wanted to tutor boardwipes and there's not many options for that in RUG. I love the card but I'm trying out some more fun stuff in the slot in the slot for the time being. Fire/Ice is probably a little underpowered but I have an original foil and possibly sniping mana dorks early seems fun.

Wheel of Fortune -> Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker

I wanted ways to get more value. Wheel of Fortune is fun, but I think I would really need more ways to synergize with it if I really wanted to make more use of it. Sometimes it was a bit of a blowout where I would discard opponents' important cards, but other times my opponents just drew good stuff (the problem with every wheel...). Kiki-Jiki can generate value right away and sometimes sticks around at slower tables. He also combos with Zealous Conscripts.

Deflecting Swat -> Counterspell

Since cascading into spells with useless targets isn't an issue anymore, Counterspell is much preferred to Deflecting Swat (I think swat is very, very good in non-blue decks, but we get access to a proper suite of counters in blue)

Ramunap Excavator -> Barrin, Master Wizard

I don't think I really want two of this effect; I'd prefer the version that dies less. I don't generally feel like I want to GSZ/Pod into it, either. Barrin is a nice way to deal with some painful creatures repeatedly, and gives us something to do with our ETB dudes that have exhausted their usefulness (and interacts nicely with Squee/Genesis in some stalled board states).

Scroll Rack -> Heroic Intervention

Scroll rack continued to be not that great. It would probably be way better in a more top-heavy version of this deck, but average cmc in this deck is kind of low so I can typically just cast stuff instead of having to ship it back. Cheap wrath/spot removal protection is much preferred.

Shivan Reef -> City of Brass

Red is a bit of a light splash in this deck; blue/green lands are the most important, especially early (I want to be able to cast counterspells or mana duders early without much trouble). City of Brass provides all of our colors, albeit it always hurts us.

Karplusan Forest -> Arcane Signet

More ramp. The deck was pretty land heavy, so I felt it was fine to cut one; same reasoning for this specific land as Shivan Reef.

Shardless Agent -> Squee, Goblin Nabob

Violent Outburst -> Lore Drakkis

Phyrexian Dreadnought -> Parcelbeast

Jokulmorder -> Auspicious Starrix

Oakhame Adversary -> Reclamation Sage

Dualcaster Mage -> Taurean Mauler

Ancestral Vision -> Thrun, the Last Troll

The cascade setup was just not working as nice as I would like. This will make it nicer to play more counterspells, also.

Dualcaster Mage was kind of neat, but didn't really do as much as I had hoped. Taurean Mauler is much better to mutate on.

Riku is probably a better general for what I was trying to do with these.

With Oakhame Adversary, I just don't have enough green in my local groups to play it, believe it or not.

I cut Ancestral Visions since its way worse without cascade in the deck. Thrun comes in as another dude. The creature count is a little high though. I'm probably going to look to make cuts for counterspells (Mana Drain and Counterspell are likely to come in first).
