The Lifegain is real!

My approach to a focused Trostani Lifegain Deck with a slight token subtheme. The initial version of the deck had a serious lack of carddraw. Well of Lost Dreams , Return of the Wildspeaker , Mangara, the Diplomat and Shamanic Revelation did some help to mitigate this issue. Main issues in this deck are oppressive control mechanisms, dying to commander damage and big enemy flyers, should you not be able to get your angels stick to the board.

Trostani & Darien, King of Kjeldor make for a great combo. Any damage you receive is turned into 1/1s which generate you life. If your opponents do not manage to oneshot you, this combo makes you quite untouchable, damage-wise and puts all opponents piloting any incremental damage decks like Nekusar, the Mindrazer or any Impact Tremors / Purphoros, God of the Forge decks in misery. Divine Visitation will make your lifegain absurd should you receive damage. With Archangel of Thune on the board, those 1/1s grow enormous quite quickly. If your opponents stop dealing damage to you, you can generate tokens with your pain mana sources (Crypt, Vault) or by creating tokens with March of the Multitudes or Finale of Glory .

Crested Sunmare , Regna, the Redeemer and Tendershoot Dryad have excellent synergy with Trostani as they will create tokens also during your opponents turns. Ageless Entity is an absolute powerhouse with the amount of lifegain in this deck. If you manage to give it protection from your opponents colours with your swords you can easily swing for lethal.

Another backbreaking combo is any indestructible effects (Avacyn, Heroic Intervention , Frontline Medic ) plus a wrath. Magus of the Disk will constantly cripple your enemies with Avacyn on the field. Shalai, Voice of Plenty will protect your Avacyn, Angel of Hope and Sigarda, Host of Herons is an excellent protection from sacrifice shenanigans.

Usually the win con of this deck is delivering combat damage but with enough lifegain you can also take your opponents out with Aetherflux Reservoir . It is not unusual to have three-digit lifepoints, especially if you manage to make Soul Warden and/or Essence Warden stay on the battlefield. Otherwise, just drop your Ajani, Strength of the Pride and perform an asymmetrical board wipe.

Maybeboard and potential replacements

• Felidar Sovereign is not in this list, yet, as I usually do not want to have to wait for my upkeep to win, but I keep considering to cycle it in. If I do so, I will probably implement at least one flash effect like Vivien, Champion of the Wilds , as well.

• Sword of Feast and Famine is the best of all the swords. I decided to implement Sword of Light and Shadow and Sword of Fire and Ice instead, though. Usually you ramp enough in Selesnya and I wanted to focus on card draw and graveyard recursion, instead, as those are the two weaknesses of this deck.

• Ancient Tomb , Mana Confluence and City of Brass are an tempting add on to this decklist. You do not have reliable access to Darien, King of Kjeldor , though. Therefore they are not implemented to not interfere with your lifegain too much.

• I gathered mixed experience with Fertile Thicket during playtesting. It is very situational and many times I had to put some sweet cards I had been waiting for to the bottom of my library due to its ETB effect. Considering to replace the card.

• Growing Rites of Itlimoc   looks to be a tempting insert. As I did dial down token creation effects during fine tuning I am considering replacing Doubling Season with it but could not make myself do so, yet.
