Hey Fektoer

First of all very cool decklist! I kinda like the fact that you don't want to play the teysa combo. Im a bit in a struggle with my teysa deck (Orzhov Friends. It's no where near as streamlined as your deck is and I mostly started it because I wanted to make an Orzhov Superfriends deck (even tho I don't have green or blue). Turns out what started out as a joke, kinda rolled and I rolled with it. So I switched from Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim to Teysa, Orzhov Scion , only played the walkers that make tokens or support tokens.

So that's where I am now. I really like your list and I'm trying to pick up some ideas (your point on Grave Pact vs. Dictate of Erebos was super valid for example. I also saw that you only play Swords to Plowshares and no Path to Exile so I went with that as well.

I just have a few questions:

  1. How are Krav, the Unredeemed and Regna, the Redeemer working out for you? Do you have enough lifegain triggers for Regna to work out? Krav's value is hard to miss, but I'm affraid he is a bit costly. The only thing why I dig them is because I try to have a bit of a legendary theme in it. Regna I ran in a Karlov of the Ghost Council deck and she was often on the list to be cut, cause she was so high in mana.
  2. You are not running a lot of removal. Hardly any boardwipes and you rely more on Teysa to do the removal for you. Of course there are a few other creatures (Elesh and Massacre Wurm), but do you have the feeling you can control the boardstate enough?
  3. You don't run the usual suspects of Blood Artist , Zulaport Cutthroat and the new Cruel Celebrant . You don't have the feeling you miss them? They do provide triggers for Regna for example.
  4. You don't run a lot of sac outlets, to generate tokens. Can you get enough value out of Teysa?

If you want it would mean a lot to me if you could have a look at my list. Cause I have the feeling I'm mostly just staring anymore and a new opinion would help a lot :)

Spirits on Kaalia of the Cruel

LordKunai,

I use all those same tricks in my Budget Commander League deck Glissa, Scrap Trawler $50 EDH.

It's difficult because the A/D/D use the same abilities so the obvious Torpor Orb is out.

The best way is using Haste, Lightning Greaves swing with Kaalia of the Vast , if you've tutored and resolve a Iona, Shield of Emeria naming you should be in pretty good shape for example.

Avacyn, Angel of Hope can protect you from Woodfall Primus .

Leyline of the Void is the best, if it's in your opening hand then It's CMC0, otherwise CMC4 is quite reasonable. Shuts down the recursive component of the deck. Bojuka Bog is a classic. Rest in Peace / Grafdigger's Cage but since you have some recursion too might hurt you on occasion. With either you could combo with Helm of Obedience . Some others Angel of Finality (Angel). Nihil Spellbomb (Draw). Keep in mind that Leyline of the Void also means Meren of Clan Nel Toth isn't getting experience counters since the creatures are exiling not "die"ing.

Cauldron of Souls might also help, but they can see it coming, and CMC5. Cauldron Haze is a bit more tricky. Archangel Avacyn  Flip but doesn't help against Sacrifice (shes no Sigarda, Host of Herons ). Teferi's Protection works good.

You can also just have fodder to sacrifice, Angel of Invention or Bitterblossom or Abhorrent Overlord or Regna, the Redeemer something like that.

Replace the cards with something like Harvester of Souls but he might get killed, or Midnight Reaper .

Another way is to pick an Infinite Combo (like my Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Restoration Angel ). Winning on your turn (maybe with a Grand Abolisher out), is the easiest way to avoid the conflict!

Or just haste + Master of Cruelties him lol, if the board is clear.

Teysa and her Orzhov Syndicate got some upgrades ^_^

Krav, the Unredeemed and Regna, the Redeemer are sooooo good and also super theme.

Priest of Forgotten Gods has put in some for real work for me.

Man I forgot how much I love this deck ^_^

Rome921,

Have you considered Arvad the Cursed ? I might even play him as your commander, since he gives an anthem effect (+2/+2) and drop Athreos in the 99. Honestly Atreos shines when he protects low CMC creatures. I don't think you will find a lot of people not paying the 3 life when 1 of your, often very powerfull, creatures dies. Next to that you play black and have a range of (under $9) tutors to fetch him.

You could throw in a little token/lifegain theme as support (very Orzhov) and play your deck as the guild extorting people and if they don't pay up exile their creatures. (Then Atreos might be super on theme again).

Legendaries I would run in a token/lifegain theme are: Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim Teysa, Orzhov Scion Karlov of the Ghost Council Kambal, Consul of Allocation Obzedat, Ghost Council Teysa Karlov Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts Regna, the Redeemer / Krav, the Unredeemed Ghost Council of Orzhova Vona, Butcher of Magan Aryel, Knight of Windgrace Elenda, the Dusk Rose Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder Yomiji, Who Bars the Way Whisper, Blood Liturgist Darien, King of Kjeldor Heliod, God of the Sun Brimaz, King of Oreskos Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle Oketra the True Elspeth, Sun's Champion Sorin, Lord of Innistrad Kaya, Orzhov Usurper Eight-and-a-Half-Tails

Support these guys with the following cards: Soul's Attendant Soul Warden Dictate of Erebos Grave Pact Smothering Tithe Ethereal Absolution Dawn of Hope Skullclamp Suture Priest Blood Artist Zulaport Cutthroat Crested Sunmare Regal Bloodlord Pious Evangel  Flip Authority of the Consuls Blind Obedience Anointed Procession Hidden Stockpile Vindictive Vampire Twilight Drover Mentor of the Meek Priest of Forgotten Gods Pitiless Plunderer High Market Shizo, Death's Storehouse Divine Visitation Intangible Virtue Attrition

A few sac outlets like Ashnod's Altar

And ofc, you have your generic Orzhov stuff like Path to Exile , Anguished Unmaking , Utter End , Wrath of God , Merciless Eviction

What maybe would also work are all the Afterlife dudes like: Ministrant of Obligation , Tithe Taker

Of course all of this above is just a suggestion. I think in this way you can easily you can keep the Legendary theme alive in your deck, but point in a bit more towards the Orzhov Syndicate. (wich in my opinion is an awesome guild!!) I think I kept a bit on a eye on your budget of $9 a card. If I missed a few my apologies.

Hey Mono_White_EDH

Nice first build on Karlov! He is my main commander and my pet deck wich I keep changing constantly because there is just too much to choose from. I've been playing him for more than a year now and in my opinion there are 2 subthemes you can go for. Of course your main theme is lifegain, wich I'll get to in a bit.

  1. You go for the removal package. Boardwhipes/Spotremoval/Graveyard Hate. This is currently the build I play and the build I really enjoy since it let's me deal with a lot of threaths on the battlefield. You play a very big removal package. I play around 16 incl. Karlov. In this build you don't care that much about lifegain on your removal, since almost every other card in your deck revolves around lifegain. Signature cards: Anguished Unmaking , Utter End , Swords to Plowshares , Merciless Eviction , Kaya, Orzhov Usurper , Return to Dust

  2. The Token build is the other option, trading in much of your removal for the ability to go wide with Karlov. Often triggering cards like Soul Warden . You'll play lots of cards benefitting creatures entering and in an aristocrat style devouring the tokens. Signature Cards: Regna, the Redeemer , Grave Pact , Blood Artist , Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim .

This brings us to the first problem with Karlov, he can't really do both. You just don't have the room to do both. The first build really lends itself to dump in an equipment theme to hit for commander damage, all while giving karlov protection of colors or can't be the target of spells of abilities. This is the other main problem of Karlov. As a voltron commander he has no build in protection, wich makes him very easily removed.

If you check my build you'll see the category I run my cards in, wich gives my deck a nice balance of lifegain/removal/tutor/draw/recursion/evasion and protection. It's not perfect, but it's really fun to pilot.

If you have any question about cards you run right now, or are in doubt of some of them. Let me know and I would really like to help a fellow Karlov commander :-)

This is my deck:

Reasons for the two questions above:

If you are winning 1/4 games, you are on par with the rest of the decks in your meta :). Either way though, tuning our decks is part of the fun and will make our playgroup improve as well.

As for the other question, for me the cards that "aren't bad", but aren't great most of time, are the signals for weak links. Either I take those out in favour of cards that synergize, increase card advantage or make a pathway to, and support, my win condition... Or, if they are cards I want to focus on, I keep them in and remove others in place of cards that'll make the "aren't bad" cards great.. Of course it all depends :).

I admit, I do not have much experience with STAXish or Control, and I'm still low on the learning curve. I do have some thoughts to share that I think can help :). I like to find a balance between flavour and function, cards that synergize and have the same "feel" while helping achieve more focus. The focus is a big step for a deck to take to get more wins. Coming up with some clear pathways to your wincons is important.

If you don't have the $ to pickup the Demonic Tutor , Idyllic Tutor and Enlightened Tutor s, there are options like Insidious Dreams . I always look at scryfall.com for transmute cards that could work as well. I just saw Brainspoil , it would be cheaper to activate than Diabolic Tutor . You would pay 3, discard it and go for any card that's 5 cmc, with special thought to either piece of your wincon. It'd also offer another removal in a pinch, or if your wincon is in hand.

If the Blood-Bond combo is your win-con right now, I'd recommend adding in recursion to get them back if they're destroyed. Argivian Find for example. Monk Idealist is a good option if you want to be more creature based. Tragic Poet is slightly slower but lower cmc. Dawn to Dusk costs a little more but pulls double duty as enchantment removal. Open the Vaults could get them both on the battlefield if each are in the yard, and for cheaper than casting both from your hand - you could make getting them from your library to your yard and casting this one pathway to your wincon. I've heard of someone using Insidious Dreams to put combo cards on top of their library, then using something to mill themselves (blue is good at this) and casting an Open the Vaults type spell. Either way you want to go, it'd be worth having at least two recursion spells to support your win-con.

If you add that enchantment recursion, a Sunbond might work to good effect, synergizing with both your lifegain and counters, but also allowing you to beef up a creature for a big strike. Spirit Loop is fantastic on big strikers, if you find your getting one in 75-80% of games. It doubles up with lifelink. Underworld Coinsmith could be a nice flavour/function addition if you start leaning into the enchantment side a little more. Basilisk Collar is a great value card giving some big creature deathtouch as one more disincentive for attacking you, while giving you another tool for lifegain when it's time to go on the attack. Imagine these on Defiant Bloodlord ?!

Worn Powerstone could be a good addition to your mana-base, something the deck might need to be able to keep responding. Smothering Tithe is one that’s off flavour but could be what you need to help ramp.

As Kaigz recommended, Dawn of Hope would go well and give you good card draw.

Krav, the Unredeemed and Regna, the Redeemer could be a nice little combo in this deck - but they both do great as solo includes. I have Krav in a deck that has the colours for Regna, but I already make plenty of tokens. In this deck, you don't have as many creatures to sacrifice to Krav, and if Regna was removed he'd be less useful for you. However, I'd say Regna might be useful? If you had a few more token generators, they'd be a great addition. Casting a creature and getting another to your hand is pretty big value in itself, but with tokens Krav is fantastic value while also making a big creature. I have him in my life leaching Ghave deck

Purity seems sweet. Do you have much red in your meta, enough to make this worth the slot and cmc? if so... Auriok Champion could swapped in for Soul's Attendant , 1 more, it has protection from red making it not just immune to red spells, but an invincible blocker against any creatures (meta dependent).

Imp's Mischief is a powerful little "counterspell" that isn't a counterspell and it goes into the bucket of cards the teach people not to target you... This style of deck is a good place to take that strategy that punishes people for coming at you. Deathtouch and instant speed removals help with that as well.

Suffer the Past is a fun flavour one I like especially because there's some graveyard based decks in my meta. It does graveyard removal while also acting as a Exsanguinate .

Batwing Brume is a cheap$ fog for your colours that also fits the flavour.

Obzedat?

Here's some thoughts on cards to take out - of course this is from online review and opinion, I don't have the gameplay experience you have.

Do you regularly have plenty of cards in hand to make the of Venser's Journal worth it?

Pontiff of Blight I don't think there's good value between his cost and what he offers you. There's cards that'd do far more for you.

I THINK cards like Night Terrors are better for much faster and competitive metas where you will know who is going to most likely be able to stop you from comboing off. Or in 1v1 games. I haven't found a place for those cards in semi-competitive group metas yet, and definitely wouldn't guess to see it fulfilling the cardslot's deserved value. It's a 1for1 trade off leaving you and the person you targeted one step behind your other opponents in card advantage. I DO see the times it could be fantastic, but it's one of those corner-case cards in the multiplayer slower style of EDH.

I feel like with the slow lifegain you have, I'd take Aetherflux Reservoir out until you consistently, after many, many games, find yourself getting to 90-100 life. I understand it to be mainly good in Storm or in a deck with more explosive life gain, like Firesong and Sunspeaker , or one that uses lifelink or Spirit Loop on a giant voltron commander. I might, if this were my deck, take it out for cards that make your deck tick a little more, just for now. Then, if you are gaining plenty of life (multiples of 50) over many games or created strong pathways to get Exquisite Blood onto the battlefield, you will by then see what is worth taking out for this. Exquisite Blood and the Reservoir are pretty their own Blood-Bond combo, but you need to make sure you have that 55 or more life consistently.

Felidar Sovereign ... Personal opinion alert .... When I first got back into magic I was so excited to pull this in a booster pack... I personally dont enjoy these alternate wincons and feel there's cards that could fill this slot that'd synergize with other cards for more diverse interactions and make the deck far more interesting. But that's just me :)

Lord_Loss931 NP, happy to help! And I know how hard it can be to make cuts, often you get a blindspot for a lot of cards. :)

Ah it's shitty its difficult to get those cards for you, are you from europe?

Well as always if completely depends on your meta! For me, there is a lot of blue so cards like Erebos do get stolen. If it wins you games i Would definitely run Fumigate. Just keep in mind that when your local meta steps up and makes decks with more control elements it would be smart to switch them around.

Regna, the Redeemer I've put in my deck for now again. My meta also runs a lot of black and cards like Plaguecrafter were wrecking karlov over and over. She provides with some bodies. Krav is still out. But that being said, the moment a good lifegain payoff arrives like Archangel of Thune shes out.

Ripwater Thanks man! Can't wait till I'm home and can start working in this deck and make some of these changes! Super excited about them, and appreciate the suggestions as well and suggested cuts as I always find that's the hardest.

I'll definitely look into the swords as I've always wanted them but honestly didn't know about Eight-and-a-Half-Tails ! So thanks

And yup Archangel of Thune would be wicked just is always sold out at my LGS and I like to buy from them as much as possible. I live in a smaller city so cards don't come in to fast.

As for cuts, Krav, the Unredeemed and Regna, the Redeemer I agree 100%. Was testing them out since I packed them but they are to expensive. Rhox Faithmender was another experiment and honestly haven't tried him out yet but included him to help win cons like Test of Endurance but will be cut if I don't ever see him do work. Again I didn't know of Arguel's Blood Fast  Flip but will consider it though I do like the protection of Erebos, God of the Dead and don't often run into copy or steal effects in my play circles. Again in my circles there are alot of creatures (and not enough removal XD) and I have won many games clearing with Fumigate and just being at a ridiculous life total either with Atherflux Reservoir or Test of Endurance .

And yeah will do man! Thanks!
