Crouching Windgrace, Hidden Gitrog

Commander / EDH BRG (Jund) Competitive

fRkrX76s21Xd4G4

An attempt at using Lord Windgrace as the commander for Gitrog cEDH. This is meant as a bit of a meta-game deck for staxier metas where keeping the frog on the field may be harder to do. It's going to try to grind out the game and slow every down until you've sculpted a hand that can go off with protection. It was not built with a TnT or combo meta in mind, that was not my LGS. If your meta is all really-fast combo (FCFS, etc), you may want regular Gitrog instead. If your meta is all TnT, I have no idea (maybe don't play Gitrog in that meta?). But this deck gets up to speed quickly and grinds out games. It may not win, but it will have a presence. YMMV.

I've broken down some pros and cons below. There are some pretty large downsides (obviously), so this is likely not fully competitive, but it still seems strong. Hopefully enough to have fun with. I'm a filthy casual, i like to have fun.

Much of this list was cribbed from the following two lists. Check them out for more competitive variants.

  • I am running Riftsweeper and a couple reanimations, but there are ways of having Gitrog destroyed/exiled that'll be harder to recover from and without Gitrog the deck straight fails (that's a pretty big negative)
  • Have to tutor for three things instead of two; there are a decent number of tutors, but it slows things down and makes the deck more tenuous.

These are... no longer here. Since i'm trying to flog this list at high power, i've finally purchased Mana Confluence and City of Traitors (lands i've needed for a while now). RIP casual cEDH, i may be the only mourner...

I don't need these otherwise dead cards. I can instead win by looping Wheel of Fortune until death. If needed i can crop rotate bojuka bog to remove graveyards at instant speed in case of titans.

In most decks the point of Ad Naus is to draw at the end of the turn before yours to start your turn with a bunch of cards. With Gitrog running Ad Naus on your own turn is fine, and Necrologia is a way of doing exactly that. Just as strong as Necropotence, without the downside of adding an exile trigger on your own graveyard.

This will be replaced by Stinkweed Imp when I next go through my collection to find it.

I'm not sure if this is a good fit for a typical Gitrog deck, but this isn't a typical Gitrog deck.

I want to put this card in, but have to find slots. It offers graveyard recursion and an alternate wincon (looping LED and Wheel) in one package. Seems strong.

This seems like a good value engine to churn through the deck, however I don't think the deck currently has enough land to make solid use of it. I'm still a couple lands shy of a typical Gitrog deck. That said, if I can find room for it, it would be a good inclusion.

Trades:

Still need to try and find room for 2-4 more land, but hopefully this will be an improvement.

Minor bump, two small replacements:

  • Wild Mongrel for Skirge Familiar
It doesn't matter how nice discarding a card for mana is, if i don't get the 5 mana i need to cast it than it's sitting useless in my hand while i go search for a cheaper discard outlet.
  • Bloodstained Mire for Verdant Catacombs
Thanks to dual-lands I can replace this (though technically i need both) to remove Prismatic Vista from a different deck that needed a better fetch (and was already running Bloodstained Mire).
Minor bump, one replacement:
  • Survival of the Fittest for Wrenn and Six
W&6 is a strong value engine in this deck, but it doesn't help win, it just helps grind games. Switching out for Survival to have a better chance of getting Frog in hand.
Minor bump, two replacements:
  • Lotus Vale and Lotus Field are out. Mana Confluence and City of Traitors are in. RIP casual-ness. This was partly because of some gold-fishing i did where they were just always "feels bad" lands in the early game, which is just too risky when trying to threaten turn three.

Retired.
