Cut Suggestions:

Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip is something I experimented with, but in the end all I could ever really do was activate her +, which is pretty weak in this deck. But my meta is pretty hard on planeswalkers. Maybe yours is more lenient, idk.

Lord of Extinction is sorta just weak here. I mean it combos great with Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord , but how often are you going to christmas-dreamland into both of those two? And Nighthowler is kinda just a worse Lord of Extinction .

I have played Sheoldred, Whispering One before and, like all of the praetors, all she does is get you targeted to death- especially if you can recur her.

Smothering Abomination and Grim Haruspex WILL draw you to death in a deck like this (a deck where you have no real wincon other than Plaguecrafter away your opponents' boards and chip in).

Deadbridge Chant 's randomness makes it pretty bad. You're aiming to have like 10 or 15 cards in your grave by the time you play this, it makes that number 25. 1 in 25 is not very good. Like the card is a decent value engine, but it's not likely to get you what you're looking for.

You have a lot of cards that I looked at and though ... "but you can get a creature to do that." Krosan Grip , Green Sun's Zenith , Reanimate , Grave Pact ? All have creature alternatives.

Suggestions for Adds:

Acidic Slime : flexible removal

Diligent Farmhand : okay ramp (see also Dawntreader Elk )

Farhaven Elf : better ramp

Phyrexian Delver : nice recursion- Reanimate on a body

Thragtusk : a BIG pillow to lie back against- five life and two blockers!

Treasure Keeper : good value

Veteran Explorer : never hurts to have the table on your side

Vindictive Lich : hits each opponent where it hurts

Wall of Blossoms : big-butt creature and a draw

Wurmcoil Engine : just insane

Hell's Caretaker : good recursion

Attrition : repeatable removal

Perilous Forays : repeatable ramp

Priest of Forgotten Gods : repeatable Plaguecrafter

Quagmire Druid : repeatable enchantment removal

Sadistic Hypnotist : repeatable hand hate

Thoughtpicker Witch : f.ck somebody's draws

Viscera Seer : free, instant-speed sac outlet, provides some card advantage

Vraska, Golgari Queen : + is great, - is great, and ult is insane

Deathreap Ritual : lots of draw

Savra, Queen of the Golgari : Grave Pact , but with a nicer mana cost, and the potential for recursion if it dies

Shadows of the Past : so. many. scries.

Zulaport Cutthroat : pings opponents to death, gains life

So I commented on this deck over 6 months ago and now I saw it on the feed so... Imma do it again. And Imma be more specific this time. Let's start with cuts.

Bane of Progress is not great. If all goes well you'll absolutely be hitting your own enchantments and artifacts.

Butcher of Malakir is no Savra, Queen of the Golgari.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel is not anything exceptional in this brew. Yeah his ETB is really strong but it draws a ton of hate and you don't seem to have many ways of subverting or withstanding that hate.

Greenwarden of Murasa is really mana-costly. 6 mana for an eternal witness effect? Pass.

It That Betrays is really bad. Better when you can reanimate it, but still unless your opponents are running aristocrats or you're forcing them to sac things (and yeah I know It does that but that's not enough), really bad. Oh yeah, and that thing I said with Gray Merchant about drawing hate? That.

Lord of Extinction's lack of trample makes him pretty meh.

Massacre Wurm is pretty meta-dependent. If your buddy runs weenies he's decent but if not...

Mycoloth is great, but the 5-mana slot is competitive.

Pathbreaker Ibex honestly doesn't seem that great. Most he's giving your guys is +5 unless you find Lord of Extinction.

Terastodon is really cool and all, but it does have one huge drawback... You can EITHER repeat the etb OR have it as a beater. And for 8 mana, repeating the etb is not enough.

Wood Elves only tutors up forests. I'd rather run Farhaven Elf in a deck that's half black.

Abundance is probably not as good as Phyrexian Arena.

Consistent token generators like Awakening Zone and From Beyond are nice, but there are better cards for the mana cost.

Greater Good is great when you have larger creatures than this deck does. As it is it's just gonna make you discard a bunch of cards, probably.

Torment of Hailfire gives your opponents something you don't want them having: choice. They'll just sac a bunch of useless crap or discard lands. Without steps to limit their options, it's not a great card.

So I looked at your maybeboard and holy crap dude, you need to put some of those in. Night Incarnate, Whisper, Blood Liturgist, Savra, Queen of the Golgari, Craterhoof Behemoth, I'm actually adding the first two to my brew now. Thanks for the ideas, sorry for stealing them.

Now Imma give you some card suggestions.

Blisterpod and Tukatongue Thallid are both 2 creatures for one mana.

Diligent Farmhand and Veteran Explorer are good early ramp.

You forgot Fleshbag Marauder when you got the rest of the edict gang!

Noxious Gearhulk could be a great substitute for Massacre Wurm if you're playing against beefier bois.

Thragtusk is pretty underrated in aristocrats.

As is Treasure Keeper, but that's less good in your deck since you have a really high mana curve.

Vindictive Lich gives you options!

Wall of Blossoms is good protection and a draw!

Wurmcoil Engine is just the best. Has a similar problem to Terastodon but it leaves tokens behind, lifelink to eat small creatures, and deathtouch to fell unreasonably large ones.

Hell's Caretaker is reanimation and a sac outlet.

Phyrexian Delver is also good reanimation.

Attrition is excellent removal.

Diabolic Intent and Vampiric Tutor are hard tutors. They're any card you want!

Perilous Forays is an awesome card for this deck, I love it.

Quagmire Druid isn't the greatest ever, but it's enchantment removal.

Sadistic Hypnotist can play the long game, run opponents out of resources.

Thoughtpicker Witch can screw combo.

Vraska, Golgari Queen is an epic sac outlet and the ult is perfect for this deck.

Westvale Abbey  Flip is pretty good. And a land.

Entomb is legendary.

Grim Flayer is great card advantage.

Fauna Shaman is like Entomb but better maybe?

Underrealm Lich is good card advantage.

Deathreap Ritual, Lifecrafter's Bestiary, and Skullclamp are all great draw.

Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat are both nice sources of damage.

Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Hi, i love your deck. What are your thoughts on these:

ZendikariWol on Generic Meren Deck No. 97

Link to my Meren deck here: Okay, the Whole Death Thing? Minor Setback. That being said, here are some of the very best.

Targets: Acidic Slime for noncreature removal, Ravenous Chupacabra and Noxious Gearhulk are good creature removal, Primal Druid and Viridian Emissary are great ramp, Vindictive Lich and, Solemn Simulacrum Wurmcoil Engine are all fantastic.

Outlets: Champion of Stray Souls may seem odd, but really he's very useful. Sacrificing large quantities of creatures, getting the same amount back. Hell's Caretaker does the same, at a smaller scale. Disciple of Bolas is good card advantage. Killing Wave is either a board wipe or a massive burn spell. Perilous Forays is legendary ramp. Quagmire Druid is a little meta-dependent, but good. Sidisi, Undead Vizier is a tutor AND a sac. Stronghold Assassin is good removal. Vampiric Rites really pretty good card draw.

And now for the passive stuff: Catacomb Sifter, Shadows of the Past, and Reaper of the Wilds are good. Deathreap Ritual, Smothering Abomination, and Lifecrafter's Bestiary are all stellar. Savra, Queen of the Golgari and Dictate of Erebos are terrifying. And, finally, Zulaport Cutthroat, while not the greatest, is pretty subtle and drains a good amount.

Hi ZendikariWol, those were a lot of interesting suggestions! Il do my best to give feedback on all of them (this post might get long so sorry in advance xD)

Baloth Null, Greenwarden of Murasa and Noxious Gearhulk are difficult inclusions given the amount of great 6 CMC cards there are. Off the top of my head I can think of Grave Titan and Kokusho, the Evening Star and those didnt make the cut.

Too many players from my playgroup run Homeward Path for me to be able to include Sepulchral Primordial but I would say normally it is a great inclusion.

Veteran Explorer is definitely worth testing but I think it might be dangerous to provide so much mana for your opponents (this is a somewhat stax build)

Killing Wave seems like it would most of the time be an overly expensive board clear. Wouldnt Torment of Hailfire be better? If possible I would like you to elaborate a little more on your reasoning for this one.

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord has been getting a lot of attention recently but I think I prefer Hell's Caretaker. More testing is needed for this one though.

Shadows of the Past and Golgari Germination dont seem to do enough to take up a slot unless you have a strong token theme.

Plague Boiler is interesting and does contribute to the political game but Pernicious Deed is just too good and I dont think I can make room for both...

Primal Druid will be tested. Seems pretty solid.

Thoughtpicker Witch is a really cool card but having to pay mana to sacrifice makes it worse than Viscera Seer and Carrion Feeder unfortunatelly.

Catacomb Sifter is likelly a future inclusion and its just a metter of figguring out what is going t be replaced.

Savra, Queen of the Golgari - how often is she triggering in your games? Ive been thinking of adding her but Im not sure she would do enough

Quagmire Druid and Stronghold Assassin are too slow. Generally speaking you want removal to work the turn you cast it and theese two might put you in some awkward situations more often than not.

Lifecrafter's Bestiary is a clear oversight on my part. Ill be adding it soon

Sifter of Skulls costs too much but I might include Pawn of Ulamog instead. Might even end up running both.

Vampiric Rites is a fine inclusion and I wouldnt blame anyone for running it. Like I mentioned above, the sacrifice cost not being zero makes other cards better in my opinion.

Gutter Grime is too slow and easy to stop given that all the tokens die with the enchantment

Butcher of Malakir seems worse than Sheoldred, Whispering One which Im currently testing

I agree that Joraga Treespeaker, Birds of Paradise, Big Game Hunter and Deathrite Shaman might not be good enough. Ill be paying moe attention in future playtesting to see if I shoul replace them.

Like most of your comments, this is about to be a long one.

I run a meren deck myself, equally beatiful as a mix of casual and competitive. Check it out here: Okay, the Whole Death Thing? Minor Setback..

So, here is a list of cards to consider:

Sac Targets: Baloth Null, Eternal Witness, Greenwarden of Murasa and Sepulchral Primordial are all good semi-reanimators. Sacrificing one creature per turn is awful. These guys will keep the late game engine flowing. Yes, their mana cost is a touch hefty but you may not even use the Primordial and the other three are honestly fine if you throw in some ramp. Speaking of, Primal Druid and Viridian Emissary are good, but Veteran Explorer is truly spectacular. Lots of ramp, and you may just get the table on your side. Noxious Gearhulk and Vindictive Lich are both so scary. People don't want to attack into Vindictive Lich and they don't want it dying, so they all leave you basically alone. That's been my experience, anyway.

Now for the outlets. You NEED you a Killing Wave. It may not be recurrable (recursible?), but dear GOD it messes up everyone's day! Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord can be really good, especially with the aforementioned Vindictive Lich. Perilous Forays is just some of the best ramp ever. Plague Boiler is a fun political piece, if you can hold it up. Quagmire Druid is very useful. Stronghold Assassin is great removal, but maybe to spiky for you. Thoughtpicker Witch can PICK apart combo, pun intended. It sounds far fetched, but honestly Vampiric Rites can do a lot of work!

Passive effects that you may wanna get your hands on include Catacomb Sifter, Reaper of the Wilds, and Shadows of the Past, Golgari Germination and Sifter of Skulls, better yet Gutter Grime, Lifecrafter's Bestiary is piles and piles of card advantage. Zulaport Cutthroat is not as bad as it may seem, doing some nice noncombat damage. However you may want to spread out your sacrifices with these effects on board, big turns always attract attention. Also possibly too mean/spiky for you are Butcher of Malakir, Savra, Queen of the Golgari, and Dictate of Erebos. I would make a case for Savra, Queen of the Golgari, however, as the sacrifice effect is optional and it could gain you some nice life.

I have a definite contempt for stax in commander. Leave the spiky trash for legacy.

So for outlets, the all-stars are, maybe Corpse Traders if you have a combo-y meta, Disciple of Bolas, Perilous Forays, Quagmire Druid is a MUST, Stronghold Assassin, and surprisingly Vampiric Rites.

A couple wraths: Killing Wave, Necromantic Selection, and Plague Boiler (a great bluff if your opponents can't remove it).

Targets include Dawntreader Elk, Entomber Exarch, Mesmeric Fiend can be sac'd in response to the etb which resolves in this order: first you sac it, then it leaves the battlefield, then it enters. Essentially exile a card in an opponent's hand. Primal Druid, Reclamation Sage, Thragtusk, and Veteran Explorer.

Sounds good! I have a few suggestions... this is always the hard part of deck building xD

Let's first go through and look at things that are not pertaining to your two win conditions, (Prossh or devour creatures)

We could take out Charnelhoard Wurm because it really doesn't help you out that much. All the creatures you sacrifice now (as opposed to the original deck list) are going to be tokens so you really don't need to much recursion. If a creature dies, just move along! Same thing with Hua Tuo, Honored Physician, Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper (as far as the whole "you aren't sacrificing non tokens" thing)

maybe take out Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder, I just feel like you can do much much better with a token creation engine. The sacrifice thing kinda turns me off to it.

Hellkite Hatchling is a bit underwhelming for a devour creature.

Ophiomancer is a very fun card but is just slowing you down.

Shattergang Brothers is just not quite good imo. You aren't going to sacrifice anything else but a creature except on very rare occasion.

Quagmire Druid is not bad, but is a slot taken up in your deck. Keep it close by just in case you need more enchantment removal.

Smothering Abomination is good in a vacuum but I feel like if you get it out.. that you'll find its hard to have things to sacrifice at the beginning of your upkeep as you fuel devour and prossh.

Stronghold Assassin and Viscera Seer can come out if you're getting picky. They are good utility cards but if you're looking to cut fat out of the deck, they are viable options.

Foster I think is going to skip over some of your token producer cards.. and we don't want that happening xD

Vile Requiem is really really slow removal.

Hunter's Prowess because I think you are going to draw WAAAAAY too many cards off of that and not be able to hold on to them.

Also switch out the Borderland Ranger and put in a Caravan Vigil! That basically guarantees you an untapped land with all this token sacrificing that's going on.
