Atraxa Maybeboard - Ideas Seeking Suggestions

Commander Deck Help forum

So I, like many of you, am sitting in a place of giddy excitement as I wait for my new Breed Lethality deck to arrive. I knew it was the one I wanted the very moment they were spoiled, and I was Vindicated to see it outselling even the much-touted Bromance (which is also a completely solid choice, along with everything but Yidris).

Anyway, as I sat waiting, I got to looking through my old cards, plucking out anything that looked particularly juicy for the new deck. My landbase is upper-mediocre for sure, and I still need to grab a few pricier staples (i.e. Archangel of Thune and Doubling Season), but I actually found a surprising number of cards which may totally merit a spot in the lauded 99.

Basically, what I'm hoping to get out of this thread is to pick a few other players' brains about how good my card choices are. If you see something that's like a "OMFG holy shit definitely put that in there," let me know and explain why. If you see anything that's like a "Wow, I maybe see what you were thinking, but that will honestly serve you no good at all," then do the same. With no further ado:

LANDS

-

- SORCERIES/INSTANTS

So yeah...if anyone can offer any reasons that any of the above cards would or wouldn't be good choices, I'm all ears. Budget is a concern (I already have all the cards on this list)), but I'm WAAAAY open to hearing better suggestions than the ones I made.

Atraxa is the tits, guys and girls. I haven't been this pumped for a new commander since Kaalia and Animar. Let's put our heads together and perfect this like I know we can.

Not sure how good Piracy is, I would think that people would just tap out in response leaving you with nothing to gain.

Freyalise's Winds looks to be amazing in this.

It looks like there isn't a coherent synergy that runs through this deck (like focusing on proliferate for example), which is fine, but that is what I would focus on in this deck, getting all the cards that add +1/+1 counters and creatures that abuse that.

Altered Ego, Forgotten Ancient, Fathom Mage, Gyre Sage, Immaculate Magistrate, Ivy Lane Denizen, Triskelion Hardened Scales, Champion of Lambholt, Sage of Hours (not saying all should be added, but certainly some)

The way I am reading this is that you are using the Breed Lethality deck as your base and looking to potentially add some of these cards to it?

If that is the case my suggestion for you is to first decide what you really want the deck to do (Primary Objective). Do you want to focus on +1/+1 counters, make it a super friends deck or simply run goodstuff with counter interaction.

Once you know that it will give you a better idea of which cards in your list make the most sense. For instance if you don't plan on doing superfriends I probably wouldn't run so many walkers. Walkers aren't usually as good in commander and if you don't build your deck around being able to support them the whole thing could fall apart on you.

I focused on +1/+1 counters in my build. From what I have experienced so far I can say Eternal Witness should be in almost any deck running green. If Diabolic Tutor is your only option run it, you are always going to want to see certain cards and tutors are the best way to get them... if you can manage them Green Sun's Zenith, Beseech the Queen, Worldly Tutor, Enlightened Tutor etc. Not saying you need all of them but a few would be ideal since you can search up that Deepglow Skate once you draw into something that it plays nice with.

The other thing you might consider is swapping in more creatures like the skate with ETB abilities and running things like Eldrazi Displacer, Cloudstone Curio, Deadeye Navigator or Erratic Portal. Flicker effects or simply bouncing your own stuff for repeated effect is usually more consistent than copying a creature.

I hate to break the bad news, but Freyalise's Winds does not work any different with proliferate than without. It says "If a permanent with a wind counter on it would untap during its controller's untap step, remove all wind counters from it instead." Meaning two counters are no different than one. It's a shame, I was really excited for a second until I read that. It's still definitely a good way to frustrate your opponents (much like a cheaper Vorinclex) but not the permanent lockout you would get if it was just remove one counter.

@ aya - NOOOOO! I was so sure I broke the system. Ah well, thanks for pointing that out before I actually tried to play it. Always rather have egg on my face over the internet than with my playgroup.

@ Shaft & Lilblue - You guys are totally right...I've sort of been vacillating on what type of counters I want to be proliferating. +1/+1's clearly have the most (and most budget-friendly) options available. Poison counters are right out--seems like the moment you drop your Ichor Rats and get that 10-turn clock rolling is the same moment 4-player turns into 3v1.

There's a few AWESOME cards that use quest counters, Beastmaster Ascension and Archmage Ascension being the first two that come to mind...I don't have either of them, or else they'd be on the list.

There's some seriously badass charge counter artifacts. Lux Cannon and Magistrate's Scepter seem like they might have competitive value.

And, as if I wasn't already paralyzed by options, there's the whole energy thing now. And honestly? The only two that really caught my eye were Aetherworks Marvel and Longtusk Cub.

In a perfect world, I would like to have some blend of all of these, along with maybe 5-10 'walkers. I realize though that it might be more consistent to kinda pick one thing and just stick to it.

I did a blend type deck but haven't messed too much with lands. If you want to check out my list check the link Atraxa EDH.
