Loam Dryad Discussion

Curve looks a little high without much ramp or fixing. Maybe something like Loam Dryad and Ulvenwald Captive  Flip can help out with that if you're not looking to run more traditional ramp.

Some other on-flavor options to bring the curve down a bit are Wharf Infiltrator (also lets you ditch higher-costed cards you might not be able to use for value and recur with your Hell's Caretaker) and Plague Spitter. Woe Strider is a nice piece of recurrable value that helps you smooth your draws a bit.

Fleshwrither is a nice utility horror that lets you go search for pieces like Hell's Caretaker or Ravenous Chupacabra.

And while it may not be as budget, Phyrexian Revoker helps you answer some threats from across the board.

Happy haunting!

hey Boza, thanks for your opinion. I was already thinking about adding one more land, or maybe two, but definitely not more. Adding also Loam Dryad wouldn't really do because I'm not looking to ramp up some big crature, and actually having only three lands in play can let you play a good match. What's more, you'll get the lands you'll need with Viridian Emissary, and with Altar's Reap. About the "needing a big creature" (actually only 4 cards do), yeah, having a Bloodthrone Vampire down on the board it's not always granted, but you can easily make up for her using Hunger of the Howlpack on a 3/3 Boar token, or on Viridian Emissary, which lets you play at least a 5/5 paying only 3 mana with Miming Slime or leeching 5 life with Essence Harvest (and it can often be game ending or game changing). Anyway, what would you suggest removing to add in more lands? I was thinking about moving Sylvok Lifestaff to the sideboard. I'll think about adding Loam Dryad (or some Llanowar Elves, which I prefer) instead of the two lands, to add more possible sacrifices

I think we had about the same idea at the same time:

bg sac value pauper

You are relying a bit too much on the bloodthrone vampire being large, with both miming slime and essence harvest. Pulling that off with just 18 lands is next to impossible. I have elected to play 19 lands, but added 4 Loam Dryad to compensate. I would scale down on the "you need a big creature to play me cards", which can be hit or easily miss, and lean on more "sacrifice" theme and definitely a lower curve.

From the sound of your meta, there seems to be a lot of group card draw going on. Make sure to overload on ramp, so you can play the extra cards you draw. Loam Dryad and Saruli Caretaker could be decent turn-1 plays in this deck, since you can tap Emmara the turn she comes down. Wirewood Lodge could also be cool. For low-cmc card draw, I would check out Mask of Memory and Selvala, Explorer Returned for your build. I would also skim the EDHREC page for Emmara.

phycomizard I really like both of those ideas. I'm not sure about Karametra's, I don't know that the devotion is high enough most times to be worth it, but the defenders definitely are. I was considering Gigantosaurus though, which would go pretty well with Karametra's I guess. I'd probably remove the Ramroller and both Loam Dryad's.

Hey, looks good for your first Commander deck. Quite a high budget for your first deck and nice Doubling Season :)

Cards to consider adding:

Most of my suggestions other than Titan and Thunderfoot are to reduce the avg. CMC of the deck which is currently 3.5. As six drops Titan and Thunderfoot are worth their mana cost. If you reduce the avg. then you can theoretically play cards faster in a game which means you can get token value from Emmara faster.

Cards to consider cutting:

  • Blossoming Sands
  • Graypelt Refuge
  • 2x Plains
  • 2x Forest
  • Isochron Scepter: not enough 2 or less mana instants
  • Blinding Angel
  • Steelshaper Apprentice
  • Akroma, Angel of Wrath
  • Auriok Salvagers
  • Darien, King of Kjeldor
  • Devout Chaplain
  • Odric, Master Tactician
  • Reya Dawnbringer
  • Crackdown
  • Lurking Predators
  • Zendikar Resurgent
  • Sphere of Safety
  • Fountain Watch
  • Condemn

Good luck with your deck.

Nice deck, this is pretty similar to one a friend of mine plays. I definitely recommend more answers for what your opponent can do - creature removal and artifact/enchantment removal is key to answer your opponents threats. Fatal Push, Murder, Naturalize can be huge for making sure your opponent cannot do things you cannot deal with and kill you before you can accomplish your plans. Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger is probably a pipe dream for this deck, Cryptolith Rite or Loam Dryad is highly unlikely to go off and getting to 10 mana with no ramp is very unlikely in a format like modern. From Beyond is also too slow, not only does it not come down until turn 4 but afterwards you're only getting a single token every turn. I would consider removing the top end creatures for cheaper stuff like Rot Shambler. Westvale Abbey  Flip is one of my favorite cards of all time, but since exile is popular in modern it just feels bad to nuke your whole board just to get Path to Exile'd.

Hope this helps!
