How to build your own Smothering Tithe:

Xyris, the Writhing Storm + Phyrexian Altar/Cryptolith Rite

That's it. That's the whole plan.

I figure out how to win after I'm swimming in mana. There's some token-y interactions like Battle Hymn, there's Drift of Phantasms as a way to tutor for Phyrexian Altar, and Chord of Calling is like free Consecrated Sphinx.

For the moment, there are no infinite combos and no "win the game" clauses. Not because I'm a combo-hating stick-in-the-mud -- just because I have plenty of infinite combo decks already, thankyouverymuch.

I'm documenting this update because removing an Altar seems like a big deal to me.

I'm taking out Ashnod's Altar, Temple Bell, and Molten Psyche.

  • Ashnod's Altar doesn't work the way I'd want it to. This deck has so little use for colorless mana that this isn't a substitute for Phyrexian Altar, it's just a disappointment.

  • Molten Psyche looks like it could win games, but as I discovered with my Nekusar deck, it's hard to make my opponents draw enough to do real damage.

And in their places, I'm adding Growing Rites of Itlimoc, Triumph of the Hordes, and Goblin Engineer.

  • Put in a Wheel of Fortune instead of Altered Ego (even though I love the latter in theory, it's not useful)
  • Replaced a basic with Taiga
  • Took out Goblin Engineer for a new counterspell
