Introduction Show

Hello all and welcome to my Modular Marchesa deck! I knew I wanted to make a deck when she was spoiled but put it off for...a long time. Now I'm back into magic and am trying to build her with a modular artifact theme. I had a friend who built her in a VERY casual way and I thought I could build upon that because the deck looked fun. Plus, I wanted my own artifact deck. This is what I have come up with and I welcome any and all criticism and feedback.

How the Deck Works Show

Combos

Myr Battlesphere/Wurmcoil Engine, Nim Deathmantle, Ashnod's Altar/Krark-Clan Ironworks

This combo will generate infinite tokens as well as infinite mana. Whatever is needed at the time. Myr Battlesphere enters the battlefield making four tokens. You sac Myr Battlesphere triggering Nim Deathmantle netting you {C}{C}. You sac one of the tokens in response to get you to {C}{C}{C}{C} to pay for Nim Deathmantle's trigger. Myr Battlesphere will return to the battlefield giving you four more tokens. Rinse and Repeat. With Wurmcoil Engine you just have to remember (if anyone asks or cares) that you are specifically ORDERING THE DEATH TRIGGERS where Wurmcoil Engine's trigger will resolve first. That gives you the two tokens to then sac one in order to pay for Nim Deathmantle. With the infinite tokens, if you don't have your win condition out yet, you can use Time Sieve for infinite turns to draw into your win condition.

This combo also allows you to win on the spot if you have Purphoros, God of the Forge, Impact Tremors, Blasting Station, Grinding Station, Goblin Bombardment, or Altar of Dementia in play as your opponents will take damage every time the creatures come into play, or you can sac the infinite tokens to damage or mill. Lastly, this combo can be done at instant speed, so you can activate all of this on your opponents endstep so that the tokens can attack on your turn.

Blasting Station/Grinding Station and Summoning Station

This is a two card combo that was meant to go together in the sets they were printed in. Summoning Station creates the token to be sacced by Blasting Station/Grinding Station. The token dying will trigger Summoning Station to untap. Create another token which will trigger Blasting Station/Grinding Station to untap. Rinse and Repeat.

Mycosynth Lattice, Scrap Mastery/Vandalblast, (and maybe) Krark-Clan Ironworks

The simple version of this combo is just Mycosynth Lattice and Vandalblast. With Mycosynth Lattice out you cast Vandalblast and hope no one destroys the Lattice. This will destroy ALL permanents your opponents control, including lands. This combo with an extra step is having the Lattice in play, sac any and all ACTUAL artifacts that will return with Scrap Mastery (like creatures, ramp, ect) with Krark-Clan Ironworks, then cast the Mastery. Definitely double check your opponents' graveyards to ensure they won't get back anything too powerful, but Scrap Mastery will make them sac their entire boards while you get back your artifacts to swing in with no resistance.

Modular

The reason for the Modular package is because the combo cards in the deck can be used here in a grindy sense. Blasting Station, Grinding Station, Impact Tremors, Purphoros, God of the Forge, Altar of Dementia, Goblin Bombardment all win with infinite combos, but I can utilize these modular creatures to do so every turn. This allows me to keep blockers up as well as be a threat until I can draw what I need to.

Arcbound Ravager - The MVP modular creature right here. Free sac outlet that adds counters. The great part with him is exile removal will never hit him unless it is gravehate.

Arcbound Crusher - Can be an alternate win con to beef up immensely then swing in with trample.

Arcbound Reclaimer - Recursion on a modular creature. Two for ones are fantastic in Magic.

The rest of the Arcbound creatures are there to continue to manipulate +1/+1 counters among my artifact creatures.

Removal

Cyclonic Rift, Toxic Deluge, Damnation, and Vandalblast are your staple removal cards in these colors.

Ugin, the Ineffable, Meteor Golem, Canoptek Tomb Sentinel, and Chaos Warp are your cards for enchantments. Meteor Golem and Canoptek Tomb Sentinel are powerful cards to recur with Marchesa's ability. Obviously, they can hit anything you need. Just be weary to hold one or two for any problematic enchantments.

Dictate of Erebos - A SOLID way to keep the board clear with all of the sacrificing I will be doing with this deck. This gets around Hexproof and Indestructible which is relevant.

Chaos Defiler - This card is being playtested but I think it will do well. Randomness can hurt, but it gets the trigger when entering AND leaving. This can happen twice a turn with Marchesa and a sac outlet. This one can get around Hexproof, and is removal for enchantments when necessary. I have high hopes for this card.

Notable Exclusions Show

Feed the Swarm - I have Ugin, the Ineffable, Meteor Golem, Canoptek Tomb Sentinel, and Chaos Warp that can hit enchantments and multiple other cards while Feed the Swarm is limited to only creatures and enchantments. I will keep an eye out while playing to see if I need more enchantment hate.

Glen Elendra Archmage - I'm just not countering with this deck. Yes, this card can go insane in this type of deck, but I focused on artifacts.

Mayhem Devil/Juri, Master of the Revue - These are simply alternate win conditions at this point. I will keep them in mind while I playtest to see if I want to swap them out for anything.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed - I'm sure some people are raising their eyebrows on a Marchesa, the Black Rose list without a Mikaeus. This deck utilizes creatures that enter with counters which undying does not affect. Plus, the other artifact creatures I have can get the counters EASILY with modular. The nonartifact creatures I have would benefit, but he doesn't affect Marchesa because she is a human. He was tried, tested, and was lackluster a majority of the time.
