Iron Apprentice

Artifact Creature — Construct

This enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.

When this dies (is put into the graveyard from the battlefield), put all counters that were on this creature on target creature you control.

If you take a look at the Notable Exclusions section I address a few of these.

For Herald of Secret Streams, I don't think granting our creatures evasion is all that important in a Marchesa list as you can clear the board out pretty effectively usually. If they have no blockers then all our creatures are unblockable.

I haven't made too many changes to the creatures section in general for some time now, but usually it's also not based on a card underperforming or otherwise lackluster. Usually a card is just replaced because something new comes out that fills that role more effectively. eg Arcbound Worker > Iron Apprentice. arcbound worker was quite good, but iron apprentice is just a bit better. Similarly, Solemn Simulacrum > Atsushi, the Blazing Sky solemn was a perfectly fine card and was good to recur each turn as it provided card advantage and ramp, synergized well with things like arcbound worker, and was easy to cast, but Atsushi gives more ramp and more card draw per use. so even though I don't have them right now, I would still generally recommend either of those cards.

I'm generally happy with the distribution of things like draw, ramp, control, aggro, etc, so I try not to change those numbers around too much. For example, I wouldn't cut Arcane Denial for Dire Fleet Daredevil as they don't have the same purpose. So for some cards, like Watcher for Tomorrow I just cut them because they were occupying the same card slot as some other new card I wanted to try, and naturally, something has to go to try the new card. But it wasn't necessarily because they were worse than the replacement, so much as it was just a convenient substitute.

Thank you, Balaam__, for all your hard work on this deck. I appreciate your extensive notes.

I think if I were to build this deck, I would go for cheap lands. Maybe Ash Barrens and Simic Growth Chamber. It'd be casual, though, since Ash Barrens isn't modern legal. It's just that decent lands doubles the cost of the deck! And while spending money on a cool card is OK, it seems lame to spend that much on just lands. It's like having tires that cost more than the rest of your car. Or a mouse that costs more than your computer.

But as for the deck as listed. If you were facing a "fair" deck with little or no removal (a green stompy deck, say,) what would you swap out? I'm clueless when it comes to sideboarding, so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.

Also, what do you playtest this deck against? I noticed that it wants to face a little interaction, so as to use Snakeskin Veil, and it works better if an Iron Apprentice or something dies occasionally. It needs enemy interaction for its wincon to make sense. If you are playing a goldfish, you just kill them with your creatures, not move counters around until your Simic Ascendancy goes off.

Thanks again for a very cool deck.

Instead of the Shambling Shell and Golgari Rotwurm, I think the deck could instead utilize some Body Dropper and Iron Apprentice, as well as bumping the Bloodbriar to 4. Ideally, the Mark of Mutiny can be replaced with another Act of Treason or a Bloody Betrayal for some kind of draw filtering, or perhaps another Lose Calm for stealing the opponent's strongest creatures for combat and sacrificing them before it wears off. Some Tentative Connection would be exceptionally useful alongside Body Dropper.

Chasmolinker the Panglacial Wurm seems great, since you don't even have to draw it, you'd need one or two at the most. i'll probably keep it in mind if i ever try to build this weird ramp counter deck we are discussing about now ahah

lhetrick13 what you found is what i suspected - unfortunately, cards should come next week so i won't be trying much apart from maybe very small changes - i don't want to print more proxies :D

i'll let you know as soon as i try out the new version.

or maybe i'll get around to print the few cards and will be able to try it tomorrow.

FYI, this is what i put together for next try:

Creatures - 4 Conclave Mentor - 3 Duskshell Crawler - 2 Hopeful Initiate - 2 Iron Apprentice - 2 Lion Sash - 2 Oran-Rief Ooze - 2 Savior of Ollenbock - 2 Scavenging Ooze - 4 Servant of the Scale - 3 Willow Geist

Lands - 4 Forest - 1 Karn's Bastion - 2 Llanowar Reborn - 3 Oran-Rief, the Vastwood - 3 Plains - 4 Razorverge Thicket - 2 Sunpetal Grove

//Enchants/Sorc/Instants - 2 Dromoka's Command - 3 Enter the Unknown - 4 Hardened Scales - 3 Swallow Whole - 3 Tezzeret's Gambit

//Sideboard - 2 Gaea's Blessing - 2 Gleeful Sabotage - 3 Mistcutter Hydra - 2 Predator Ooze - 4 Savage Summoning - 2 Wildwood Scourge

lmk if you have any comment on this one

Hey, well done so far for a first deck that's less than $50. Nice pulls from your box of Nashi, Satoru, Junji, and Chip.

You don't have lands? My advice before you go any further is to fill in enough deck spots for 35 lands. They can be 15 Swamp, 15 Island, Command Tower, Path of Ancestry, Secluded Courtyard, Unclaimed Territory, Sunken Hollow. The 30 basic lands can just be place holders until you can add more Dimir dual lands. The idea here is to fill the required deck spots you need for lands that way you can see how many deck spots you have left to add other cards or how many cards you have to cut to add lands.

You might have pulled a Secluded Courtyard and Dismal Backwater from your box since it's an uncommon and a common. If you did add them. Tower, Ancestry, Territory and Hollow are not in the NEO set, but are budget lands that can make more than one color. Tower is a staple land in Commander that all your mulicolored decks can use.

To add 35 lands you will have to cut 14 cards since currently you have 79 cards and you need 99 cards + Satoru to make 100 cards. Some cuts to consider are little creatures who are not Ninjas and don't have any ability that helps them to attack such as flying or unblockable. Enormous Energy Blade is the worse card here, the turn you equip it to a creature you control that creature can't attack with the +4/0 pump because it becomes tapped, easy cut. Some other cards to consider cutting:

After you add lands I offer more help if you're interested. Good luck with your deck.

The new Iron Apprentice from NEO would be a fantastic replacement for Arcbound Worker. Gets around the artifact creature restrictions.
