Kruphix, God of Horizons

NoviceMagician, 10 years ago

Just an update to explain to those who do not understand Kruphix, God of Horizons's ability. Here's the official ruling by Wizards of the Coast.

From Wizards.com - "As long as Kruphix is on the battlefield, unused mana will remain in your mana pool as steps and phases end (although it will become colorless). This means you can add mana to your mana pool and spend it during a future step, phase, or turn. Once Kruphix leaves the battlefield, you have until the end of the current step or phase to use the mana before it disappears."

Shoutout to PvtPipes for reminding me to make this update! Even if it was unintentional, thank you!

Total Overhaul 2: Electric Boogaloo

-1 Citadel Siege from sideboard. It's fun when used but just so high-cost I never found myself wanting to swap it in.

-2 Utter End from sideboard +2 Hero's Downfall to sideboard. I was running the Utter Ends mostly to deal with Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and Downfall does the same for less.

-1 Battle Brawler -1 Mardu Strike Leader +2 Athreos, God of Passage. Battle Brawler is good, but 3 is enough to draw it fairly reliably. And Strike leader is weird. He's best when dashed out, and 4 mana is a lot in this deck. AND Alesha can't bring him back. But the token creation is handy, so I'm leaving 1 in. Adding Athreos because he makes my stuff harder to kill. Which is always good.

1 Utter End to sideboard
-1 Crackling Doom +2 Collateral Damage. This was a tough decision because I recently cut the collateral damages, but the synergy with Athreos, God of Passage is unreal. Not to mention Alesha, Who Smiles at Death. Who even cares about sac when you can just bring back EVERYTHING?

-2 Mardu Charm from sideboard -2 Zurgo Helmsmasher from sideboard 2 Goblin Rabblemaster to sideboard 1 Chief of the Edge to sideboard +3 Zurgo Bellstriker. Mardu charm is nice to swap in if you want it, but you rarely, if ever, want all 4. So you only really need 2 in the sideboard. Helmsmasher is just garbage. Rabblemaster is a good card overall, and the warrior subtype means it's getting buffed by your Chiefs. Buuuut the tokens aren't warriors, and that's its main strength. Chief of the edge is a staple of this deck, but it can't be brought back by Alesha, so only having 3 in the mainboard is fine. You can always put the 4th back in if you need to make sure you get it, or if your opponent isn't putting them in your yard. Then we have bellstriker. This card is CRAZY. One mana for a 2/2 that can't block. Seems reasonable. But you play that turn one, and then drop chief of the edge turn 2? That's a 3/2. Turn 3 drop Arashin Foremost? Now it's a 3/2 with double strike. If you're swinging with board every turn, your opponent should be at 8 life after turn 3.

A little shifting

Took out one Kiora, the Crashing Wavefoil and added Sarkhan Unbroken. They work really really well together, and Sarkhan helps me get to Primeval Titan faster.

I've swapped Ezuri, Renegade Leaderfoil for Omnath, Locus of Mana because he has performed extremely well in his new spot and Ezuri, Renegade Leaderfoil can easily be tutored for.

Fyndhorn Elder was swapped for Primal Forcemage because of his combo with Concordant Crossroads and Genesis Wave.

Grand Pri Trial; Somewhere between 30-40 people

To start, I absolutely love this deck. Went 3-2, but conceded my last match because I did not have enough points to qualify for the top. Official score was 2-3.

Match 1: Mono Red; Won 2-0

Game 1: Amazing luck and amazing pulls. He had to Mulligan down to 4. Bile Blight in the first hand, ultimate prices, and Silumgar's Scorn got me there easily. I played Dragonlord Ojutai T5 allowing him to get out a Purphoros, but I had enough counter-spells that nothing else ever hit he board and he was a non-issue.

Game 2: He tried using a dash strategy to keep me from using Drown in Sorrows. I started with a Virulent Plague in-hand, and from there it was just keeping the dash creatures off the board long enough to drop it. Easy win.

Match 2: Mirror Match; 0-2 Loss

Game 1: A sign I need a little more practice with control! This was a very close game. I waited on him to play a dragon first, but just didn't have the counter-spell percentage in hand that he had pulled. I ended up losing a slow death to Silumgar.

Game 2: This game is the reason I play magic. I was down almost the whole time, low on cards against his. He had dragons out and draw spells and a whole ordeal. I managed to pop off a Crux, and then my own Ojutai with plans to Dragonlord's Prerogative next turn. He top-decked Foul-Tongue Invocation, but when he cast his draw spell at the end of my turn, I was able to get the Prerogative off anyway. I pulled a bunch of digs, he plopped down an Ojutai with almost no cards. I did not have an answer in hand, so I went down to 4 life. We went to turns. I anticipated once, then was able to Dig Through Time twice. Then anticipate again. I found the answer but then was tapped out and he was able to play a Silumgar. It was enough to seal my fate. He went on to play in the GPT Final 2, and I believe he won. Great player, awesome matches. I was really happy to play him.

Match 3: Jeskai Ascendancy; 2-0 Win

Game 1: Got to Thoughtseize T2 and pull his Jeskai Ascendancy. He then proceeded to top deck another and play it T3. From there, it was mostly a waiting battle. I kept back a counter-spell for any Treasure Cruises he might have and otherwise just played to the board state. Used Ultimate Price's on tokens, which I never like doing, but I with an Ascendancy out I needed to keep damage as low as possible. Foul-Tongue Invocation was a beast here. Kills a creature and essentially negates a Stoke the Flame.

Game 2: As predicted, he switched a little more towards the control meld. I plopped in a Dragonlord's Prerogative in light of a potential Disdainful Stroke. He flopped in a Dragonlord Ojutai and was shocked that I had left in Foul-Tongue Invocation. Very easy Game 2 win.

Match 4: Mirror Match; 0-2 Loss

Game 1: More sign I need practice in mirror matches. They were playing the planeswalker version of the Dragon build. Elspeths, Narsets, the like. It was an interesting build and one I hadn't seen before. I dropped an Ojutai much too soon to which he responded with an Elspeth. I was able to downfall her, but not before the Ojutai ate it and I was playing a losing card-draw battle. Interested deck to play, though!

Game 2: Kept a 2 blue mana hand with 2 Scorns, an Ojutai, a downfall and a Stratus Dancer. Thought I could make it. Big mistake---learned about mulling!

Match 5: Green/White Devotion; 2-1 Win in Practice Match

Game 1: Pretty easy. Just kept the board clear between Crux and Ultimate Price.

Game 2: Sided out too many Crux's and Bile Blights. Fleecemane Lions got me.

Game 3: Grindclock???? What an interesting idea. I'd scry, and he'd just dump my scry to my graveyard. Pretty effective. He was decently close to milling me out while he had a decent board state (Tasigur, Elemental, Mystics and Two Manifests), but I dropped an Ojutai, Ultimate Priced the Elemental, got the Tasiguar with a Downfall the following turn, then finished with an Invocation, and basically outraced him. Fun little game.

Potential Changes

Might exchange 3 Anticipate for 2 Jace's Ingenuity and a Negate. Not a big fan of Ashiok replacing the Duress so far, but haven't been able to use him much so I won't hate until I see him hit the field. Debating another Foul-Tongue Invocation sideboard for the mirror match.

Brago

unfortunatly brago is from "vintage masters" that's why the deck is banned for playing modern what my goal was in the beginning, combo just to nice to take him out ;)

What do people think of Stirring Wildwood? Also, ended up taking out Dark Confidants in favor of more combo pieces, like the addition of Cartel Aristocrat MB, as well as the draw / search agents of Collected Company and Congregation at Dawn. But do I still need more deck acceleration like with Bob?
