My first true attempt at a serious commander deck(All be it on a budget) the deck is a deck based around Grenzo, Dungeon Warden aggro but due to being budget it may end up more tempo than consistent aggro. This aims to be a budget version of the already great Grenzo ft. DJ Doomsday | Competitive Primer deck.

Budgeting Mana and Ramp Show

Seeing as the most costly part of Grenzo decks are the mana base and artifact ramp I am aiming to try and avoid playing cards over 20-30 dollars at the moment.

Budgeting Your Lands Speed

To get around this(and the fact that must budget lands are tapped) the deck plays some situational taplands such as Auntie's Hovel and Dragonskull Summit

In order to get to the 2BBB that is usually needed for Grenzo to combo of with Doomsday we also play lands that can tap for or generate 2 mana quickly such as: - Peat Bog - Graven Cairns - Shadowblood Ridge - Temple of the False God

Budgeting Ramp

Ramp for the deck is actually harder to budget than the manabase. With the manabase some cards can be substituted for basic lands and save you quite a bit, however with the ramp in B/R it seems to be harder to find good consistent ramp on a budget. This does however play into a benefit of Grenzo, there is a high likelihood that you won't need your ramp cards to stick around for more than 2 turns.

Artifact Ramp

Avoiding some of the most expensive artifact ramp cards is possible in Grenzo. An obvious and all time great addition is Mana Crypt but there are slightly worse substitutes to use.

• Mana Vault works well for providing mana for grenzo activations.

• Sol Ring all time commander staple.

• Thran Turbine exclusively for Grenzo activations.

• Chrome Mox 0 mana for 1 of any colour you need at only the cost of a card in hand.

• Rakdos Signet Provides a way of getting mana to cast Grenzo or rituals.

• Talisman of Indulgence mana fixing.

• Fellwar Stone mana fixing.

• Lotus Petal if you can get a tempest block one it's a great budget addition.

Tutors on a budget Show

Grenzo decks play a large amount of tutors. The price of 4-5 of those tutors could come to more than the price of this entire deck and they do make the deck play much more consistently. So as with the ramp and mana base I am trying to avoid cards over $20.

Tutors to Avoid

These are tutors that should probably never be played in a grenzo deck no matter the budget.- Rune-Scarred Demon quite a lot of mana for a tutor in a deck that could win with that much mana. Pass.

• Imperial Seal If you want to vampiric tutor for 30 times the price at a slower speed go ahead. I'll be sitting in my budget corner.

-- Diabolic Revelation potentially good tutor in the budget deck but seems to expensive in both mana cost and speed. If you cast this you'll be a target before you can likely kill anyone.

With this deck you're trying to avoid expensive spells and a general rule is anything that cost the same amount as your win con should win the game that turn.

Maybe Tutors

1. Entomb a good card for getting a combo piece into the graveyard for recursion.2. Liliana Vess she's a 5cmc planeswalker with an ult that can win the game. Also a vamp tutor on a fairly short stick. Good potential although maybe to slow.

Most likely tutors

- Diabolic Intent We don't care about keeping creatures around to much so the sacrifice isn't to bad. sorcery speed isn't great but its a 2 mana tutor what can you expect.

• Buried Alive This card combos well with what grenzo wants to do by giving any of our reanimation effects targets if we can't hit creatures with grenzo.

• Shred Memory this and basically any card with transmute are good budgets for grenzo. Allows us to tutor up doomsday or any of our good 3 cmc spells.

• Maralen of the Mornsong not great when we play it on our own turn. Better when targeted by Grenzo. Helps against certain decks and best played on your opponents endstep.

• Vampiric Tutor good old Vamp tutor. The tutor that doesn't cost the price of your deck and is better than most tutors that do.

The deck at the moment is lacking cheap tutors to search out combo pieces so I will probably either have to invest in more scrying effect cards or increase the budget even further.
