Maybeboard

My first Riku deck was centered around creatures with ETB effects. It quickly became my favorite deck, and after playing with it for a few years, I want to explore the other side of Riku with this spellslinger build. But rather than build a low-curve deck full of cantrips, storm cards, or extra turns, I wanted to make the deck more interactive and not quite as powerful. It still plays like a classic storm deck, but aims to play with the board a bit before comboing off.

The result is a more grindy control/tempo deck that pushes to always have more lands in play and more cards in hand than anyone else at the table--Temur excess at its finest.

Deck Mechanics

Ramp

Draw

  • All of the draw in this deck is handled with instants and sorceries for maximum synergy. Generally speaking, cantrips like Brainstorm are used to dig for bigger draw cards like Tidings and Recurring Insight, until you're ready to start going off.

Win

  • Later in the game, ramp is telescoped with effects that reduce the cost of instants and sorceries. Creatures like Goblin Electromancer can be copied with Riku for greater impact.

  • Other creatures like Guttersnipe and Electrostatic Field deal damage for each instant or sorcery spell cast.

  • The deck also has many ways to reuse instants and sorceries from the graveyard, such as Past in Flames, Mizzix's Mastery, and Regrowth effects. Speaking of recursion, Holistic Wisdom is an absolute bomb in this deck. It's one of my favorite underplayed cards.

  • Rather than extra turns, the deck uses cards like Turnabout and Early Harvest to untap lands. They can usually be recurred multiple times during my final turn to keep the "Storm" going.
