GIANT RAINBOW BABY OF DOOM!

Overview Show

This deck wants to mutate onto indestructible creatures, and then control the board (or lack thereof) with repeated boardwipes via Child of Alara while your indestructible mutants remain to smash face! As a voltron strategy, it is most effective to choose the best indestructible creature and then continue mutating onto that same creature, thereby triggering multiple mutate abilities at a time and taking advantage of cumulative mutate triggers. Although the base creature for mutate targets should be indestructible, like all Voltron strategies, it is still vulnerable to spot removal like exile or bounce.

At one point in time, the Commander rules were such that when Child of Alara died, it would either go to the graveyard and trigger it, or a replacement effect would put it to the command zone and not trigger it. Therefore this deck needed to rely heavily on reanimation spells, as The Baby had go to, and stay in the graveyard, thus unable to be re-cast from the command zone. The rules were changed however, and now when it goes to the graveyard, it triggers, and it can then go back to the command zone, thereby freeing up space in the deck of re-animation cards that older versions used. Although cheaply recuring the baby could be a good strategy, I have chosen to rely more on ramp for re-casting, and relying on mutate triggers to control the board between baby wipes.

Sacrificing the Baby Show

Sacrifice outlets are key to maintaining control of the board. They include some lands, some Gods, and sorceries.

It is often a good idea, if able, to cast the Baby when you want to use it, which requires either extra mana to activate or cast a sacrifice, or an appropriate land on the battlefield. If The Baby sits on the battlefield without a way to sacrifice it, there is more chance that it could be exiled or otherwise incapacitated.

Mutating Show

Creatures with mutate should not really be cast, but instead held in hand until there is a good indestructible creature to mutate onto. With most of the mutate abilities triggering each time the creature mutates, you can get the most value by mutating repeatedly onto one creature, although this strategy is vulnerable to spot removal.

Unfortunately, the only real defense against spot removal comes from Slippery Bogbonder, and Boneyard Lurker which can help get back mutate creatures lost to spot removal.

The Gods are not generally great mutate targts, as they either need devotion to be a creature, or have a requirement to be able to block or attack. As opposed to filling the deck up with as many Gods as possible, I chose Gods to include if they are decent mutate targets, or if they are useful in some other respect, like sacrifice outlet, card draw, or ramp, etc...

The best Gods to mutate onto are the Amonkhet Gods as they are always creatures, while the other Gods are not always creatures. Ultimately, Gods can serve as an indestructable mutate base to build onto whether or not they attack, but mostly they serve as indestructible utility pieces for things like sacrifice outlet, card-draw, and ramp. They can also all be put onto the battlefield with The World Tree.

Toski, Bearer of Secrets and Brash Taunter are probably the best creatures to mutate onto.

Ramp Show

There is a noticeable lack of mana rocks in the deck, as they would usually just get blown up. Therefore it relys on spells which put lands into play. There are fewer basic lands and forests then there are ways to fetch them, so these resources are best early in the game, and at worst can be dead cards mid to late game. Hopefuly, by the time these spells become useless, there is already plenty of mana, and much cooler things are happening than fetching lands...

Splendid Reclamation can get fetch lands back to play to use with The World Tree, and can return lands after a Cataclysm or Jokulhaups.

Combos and Winning Show

While the main strategy of this deck is to control the board by repeatedly triggering Child of Alara, and then just swinging with indestructible mutants, the ultimate goal is to get Avacyn, Angel of Hope onto the battlefield, then recur either Jokulhaups or Bearer of the Heavens by using mutate the triggers of Lore Drakkis or Boneyard Lurker, and completely dominate.

Auspicious Starrix might be the most powerful mutant. Once this creature has mutated three or four times, it can start putting enough lands on the battlefield to allowing you to continue mutating multiple times a turn, as long as you have mutants in hand.

Vadrok, Apex of Thunder and Lore Drakkis are probably the second most powerful mutants. These can both recur ramp cards, which is cool, but they are really powerful when they can recur tutors or card draw. For example, with Demonic Tutor in the graveyard, each time Vadrok mutates you can tutor for another mutant and repeat.

A creature which has Auspicious Starrix and Vadrok, Apex of Thunder mutated onto it can use Vampiric Tutor to tutor and put Avacyn to top of library, then onto the battlefield. Eldritch Evolution can also be used with Vadrok to get Avacyn on the battlefield.

The World Tree fixes your mana, but it can also just get all the gods onto the battlefield. If all the Gods are on the battlefield, there will be enough devotion to make all of them creatures except for card:Purphoro, Bronze-blooded, who is mostly included to give the other Gods haste in this case. Purphoros can also work with Bearer of the Heavens.

Tiamat is mostly in here to turn on devotion Gods on if The World Tree is activated. She can tutor for Yosei, the Morning Star if cast.

Gift of Immortality puts The Baby back into play every time it dies, no need to recast!

What Happens in Alara, Stays in Alara... Show

A few of the Gods had been planning a fun weekend getaway to Alara. It was going to be a crazy time. They would spend all weekend shard-hopping and partying, taking advantage of all the sights and pleasures that Alara had to offer. They could be as debaucherous and wild as they wanted, because what happens in Alara, stays in Alara... or so they thought. One night, after excessive consumption and uninhibited wiling out, they all got back to the hotel and started to feel, well, a little frisky.. One thing led to another, and a great time was had by all...

Now I'm not exactly sure how Gods make babies, and I'm not sure that the Gods themselves are exactly sure how they make babies, but a few weeks later, they were all sure that somehow, that weekend in Alara, they had made a baby.

There wasn't really any way do decide who's baby it was, as that stuff is fuzzy when it comes to Gods, so they decided that the only fair thing to do was all take care of it together. This however, was no easy task. This was a GOD baby, and a cranky God baby at that. To put it nicely, baby Alara was a brat. Baby Alara would constantly throw temper tantrums, GOD baby tantrums, which would destroy everything. The Gods would try and get toys for baby Alara, but they would always just get destroyed along with everyting else during the tantrums. Eventually they found some indestructible toys, and whild these kept baby Alara happy for a little while, baby Alara would quickly get bored, so they had to constantly change and upgrade the toys to make them and more fun and interesting. Still, baby Alara would not be satisfied.

The Gods were tired, and they had grown to resent baby Alara. So much so that one day, they decided it would be better to just sacrifice the baby and make everyone's life easier, so they did. However, baby Alara did not like this, and threw a cosmic temper tantrum. Although this didn't work quite as the Gods had planned, baby Alara got worked up enough to fall asleep, and finally the Gods had a moment of peace!

Now although baby Alara's naps didn't last all that long, the Gods took to doing this regularly, as it was the best way they had of getting a small break. Each time baby Alara threw a tantrum though, everything was still destroyed, sometimes even an entire plane, and while at first this was aggravating and tiresome for the Gods, they eventually realized that they could use this situation to their advantage.

It was then that they decided to take their baby Alara though the multiverse and use it as a weapon of untold destruction! They would take and do what they wanted, and destroy anything and everything else! All they had to do was sacrifice Baby Alara, and Cataclysm would follow. Now, the entire multiverse was their own personal Alara, and every day was a weekend of wanton mayhem! Nothing could stop them, all bowed to the Gods and their Giant Rainbow Baby of DOOM!

With all this power and freedom, the Gods started to get a little bored. They decided they needed a little vacation. They asked Bearer of the Heavens to babysit for the weekend...

VIVA ALARA!!!
