Sisay's Legendary Toolbox

Commander / EDH GW (Selesnya)

Greyhame888

Legendary tribal! Having Captain Sisay as the commander lets us tutor for what we need for pretty much any scenario. Very toolboxy, with tons of options.

Sol Ring and Birds of Paradise are turn one ramp. Selesnya Signet , Fellwar Stone , Farseek , and Sakura-Tribe Elder provide turn 2 ramp.

3 drops are a great spot for us. Cultivate and Kodama's Reach give us more land ramp. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds is a crazy mana dork, and Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma provides cost reduction for most of our deck.

We also have some lands that produce extra mana like Ancient Tomb and Gaea's Cradle .

Seedborn Muse is an all-star here. Not only will in generate mana options, it allows us to use Sisay's ability on each player's turns!

And for that mid/late game boost, Mirari's Wake is always welcome as both an anthem and mana doubler.

One major concern with a tribe like angels is losing them. You worked hard to ramp into a big threat, and your opponents do their best to remove them! This sections focuses on keeping our stuff on the board.

First up, some of our winged ladies are quite good at protecting themselves and their friends. Avacyn, Angel of Hope makes all our permanents indestructible! Shalai, Voice of Plenty makes all other creatures, planeswalkers, and you hexproof. With both of these on board, you can be pretty tough to deal with.

One of the ways your opponents can get around this is to force you to sacrifice. Thankfully, we have a way around this too! Sigarda, Host of Herons stops this cold. While not necessarily protection, I feel like Adarkar Valkyrie deserves to be mentioned here. Activate her in response to one of our other creatures dying and we get to bring it back!

Asceticism not only grants hexproof to all of our creatures, it gives us an option to regenerate anything that does happen to die.

We have some good instant speed protection options too. Heroic Intervention protects us from any kind of targeting or destroy effects. Teferi's Protection is even better, literally removing us from the game until our next upkeep. Honestly one of my favorite cards in magic.

Added in Dragonlord Dromoka for some extra protection on my turn, especially against counterspells and combat tricks. Akroma's Memorial is great to protect my creatures from alot of removal too. Eiganjo Castle is a new addition. 2 damage may not seems like much, but can actually be pretty clutch. Eight-and-a-Half-Tails can protect us from basically anything that targets us.

Linvala, Keeper of Silence is just a pain, as she shuts down all creature activated abilities your opponents control! Mana dorks are now useless.

One exceptionally good angel for disrupting the board is Brisela, Voice of Nightmares . If we can get Bruna, the Fading Light and Gisela, the Broken Blade out together, the meld is scary indeed. Combine this with Gaddock Teeg and we can seriously hose our opponents. We can get around this with cards like Thran Temporal Gateway .

Maze of Ith can either give us pseudo-vigilance, or remove an opponent's big threat from combat. Arcane Lighthouse lets us remove hexproof and shroud from our opponent's stuff so we can target it.

Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshares are great instant speed removal. Comeuppance is another great option that most people don't see coming. Austere Command and Wrath of God fill our board wipe slots. Grasp of Fate is great as well, as it allows us to hit one non-land permanent per opponent!

One of the best removal options in the deck is Aura Shards , as it is a MAY ability and can basically clear out every artifact and enchantment our opponents have. Especially if we can get a bunch of little creatures out consistently...

It just wouldn't be an angel deck without lifegain. A few of our creatures have lifegain innately, including Archangel of Thune , Baneslayer Angel , Gisela, the Broken Blade , and Lyra Dawnbringer . Many of them can also either give themselves and others lifegain, like Lyra Dawnbringer , and Angelic Skirmisher . Trostani, Selesnya's Voice gains us life equal to the toughness of any creature that hits our board.

True Conviction is especially good as it gives all or our creatures not only lifelink, but double strike as well!

All of this works very well with Alhammarret's Archive , which doubles our lifegain and card draw. Speaking of card draw...

Some of our card draw is done through cantripping. Beast Whisperer gives us a card any time we cast a creature. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds should draw us cards pretty frequently. Lifecrafter's Bestiary cantrips as well at the cost of one green mana.

Sylvan Library can be especially good since our lifegain strategy should mitigate the loss from taking extra cards. Sylvan Library + Alhammarret's Archive is just awesome. It lets us draw 5 cards per turn and keep 3 with no life loss!

Due to the sheer number of legendaries we run, Reki, the History of Kamigawa will draw us a ton of cards.

And of course, all of this is doubled by Alhammarret's Archive .

In the end, we are trying to win via combat damage. Most of the angels have pretty high power and are great for swinging like Avacyn, Angel of Hope , but we can't just rely on the ladies.

Overwhelming Stampede is a great combat finisher. Buff our whole field and swing for lethal. Beastmaster Ascension does something similar. As soon as we have swung with 7 total creatures, all our creatures get +5/+5.

We have a couple anthem effects too. Lyra Dawnbringer buffs our angels. Mirari's Wake buffs all our creatures. Archangel of Thune , Shalai, Voice of Plenty , and Gavony Township can put +1/+1 counters on all our creatures.

Captain Sisay is very good for pulling out a specific legendary creature or planeswalker that we may need. Eladamri's Call too, but only for creatures.

Defense of the Heart is just a crazy card. Why yes, I will definitely go pull my two best creatures out and drop them on the field for 4 mana!

I'm a big fan of Wooded Bastion in the deck too, since it helps us hit those WWW or GG casting costs more easily.

[12/15/18 - Captain Sisay is just too good not to be the Commander. Moved Karametra, God of Harvests to the 99.

01/10/19 - Discovered Karametra isn't all that useful in the 99. Dont need much ramp by the time I get her. Karametra out, Huatli, Radiant Champion in. Huatlin is removal and card draw all at once.

1/1 tokens seem to either get buffed or turned into 4/4s, so... Skullclamp out, Thousand-Year Elixir in to help abuse Sisay's tutor ability.

03/13/19 - Luminarch Ascension out, Tooth and Nail in. Luminarch often ended up either making me archenemy very early on, or a ‘win more’ card mid-late game. Tooth and Nail is a much better choice as being able to grab 2 relevant creatures and put them straight into play is amazing.

03/27/19 - Quite a few swaps. Got rid of a bunch of cost reduction stuff and underperformers to add in a few better legendary cards to fetch with Sisay, cheat them out, and just generally upgrade the deck. Doubling Season , Emeria Angel , Emeria Shepherd , Herald's Horn , Oketra's Monument , Sunblast Angel , Urza's Incubator all out. Akroma's Memorial , Dragonlord Dromoka , Helm of the Host , Eight-and-a-Half-Tails , Privileged Position , Rhonas the Indomitable , Thran Temporal Gateway all in!

April 9, 2019 - Sensei's Divining Top and Thought Vessel out. Bow of Nylea and Fellwar Stone in. Bow for recursion and Fellwar for color fixing. Hand size was rarely an issue and the Bow is great to retutor after a big threat is removed. Also swapped Seraph Sanctuary for Eiganjo Castle . Eiganjo is a bit more protection, as well as being tutorable because it's legendary.

May 6, 2019 - I've come to the realization that this is now more of a legendary tribal than an angel tribal deck. I still have some great angels, but there's many more legends in the deck now than when I started. Adarker Valkyrie out, God-Eternal Oketra in.

June 3, 2019 - Dropped a Plains for an Ancient Tomb . Acceleration is good, and the life loss is offset by our lifegain theme. Also removed Privileged Position for Vivien, Champion of the Wilds to enable us to flash in creatures on other people's turns after tutoring for them with Sisay.

June 11, 2019 - Dropped Arch of Orazca for Gaea's Cradle . Finally got my hands on one, and seems like a good place to put it :D Fetchable with Sisay too!

June 17, 2019 - Another update! Regna, the Redeemer , Champion of Lambholt , Huatli, Radiant Champion , and 2 plains out. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds , Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma , Reki, the History of Kamigawa . Reflecting Pool , and Okina, Temple to the Grandfathers in. The deck is moving to full on legendary tribal, and this gives us more legendary targets, as well as more ramp and card draw.

June 29, 2019 - Temple of the False God out for Savannah . Easier to hit color pops and never comes in tapped.

August 1, 2019 - Dropped a few non-legendaries to keep the legendary theme going. Added Gaddock Teeg , God-Eternal Rhonas , Reki, the History of Kamigawa , Seedborn Muse , Kamahl's Druidic Vow , and Heroes' Podium . These shift us toward a full legendary toolbox.

September 15, 2019 - Dropped a Plains for an Enlightened Tutor .
