Hound of Griselbrand Discussion

I may have to see if people will allow this for Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons and The Scorpion God.

I think you can run fine with 2 less lands, I'm not a big fan of bounce lands or you could consider Temple of the False God and Jund Panorama for removal. Many decks run good with 36 and you have some solid ramp.

Some other removals: Vicious Shadows, Death Pit Offering, Rampant Growth, Wake the Dead, Minion Reflector, Altar of the Brood, Voldaren Pariah  Flip, Strangleroot Geist, Slum Reaper, Savra, Queen of the Golgari, Hound of Griselbrand, Butcher Ghoul

So these are mostly good cards but some just don't do enough or won't be significant for your deck. Others, like Savra, I would recommend using Grave Pact instead but would also say 2 of these effects is generally enough. If you really want that effect to show up every game run savra or Shattergang Brothers as a commander.

Deadbridge Chant- I love this card but I don't know that you will be particularly happy when someone destroys it. I would consider it for removal from this deck.

@Diakaine Dictate of Erebos is an amazing card for Marchesa, but I avoided putting it in because it might be too mean for my play group. I want everyone to have fun. My play group also has Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves banned, just beacuse they were used in every single EDH deck, and just could so easily swing a game so early. Same with Sol Ring. Variety and letting people get to play all their cool cards is what makes the game fun for us.

If I wasn't going for a budget deck, you bet I'd put Grave Pact and Mikaeus, the Unhallowed in my Marchesa deck. Definitely cards to add later down the road if I have some extra spending money.

Hound of Griselbrand was a nice suggestion. Thanks!

One of my favorite combos is to completely lock out your opponents creatures using Grave Pact Dictate of Erebos and a sac outlet Viscera Seer or Ashnod's Altar. also Toxic Deluge is a great board wipe to lower you off the throne. and anything with undying will never die so Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is good or anything with undying Hound of Griselbrand and more protection for marchesa like Lightning Greaves or Swiftfoot Boots. heres my decklist if you would like to see Marchesa, the black death

The reason I use Serum Powder over Oath of Nissa is that it can also ramp in a tight spot. My turn 1 is almost always Flamekin Harbinger followed by turn 2 dork, which makes oath take all the way until turn 3 before I can cast it. Although it doesn't look it, Flickerwisp is too much strain on the mana due to the double off color cost.

I have tried tyrant. It didn't work.

Shriekmaw misses on too many creatures right now to run 4 of. In a matchup where I need it, I effectively already have 5 copies due to harbinger. Hound of Griselbrand however has been an all star in this deck if the combo does not happen, creating value or being a 2 mana or being a 4/4 double striker almost every time.

Ingot Chewer is mainboard rather than sideboard, because, in the matches I need it, I need it in all 3 games to stand a chance. In addition, so many decks run targets for it that, while confusing at times, it is rarely a completely dead draw.

As for Nova Chaser, it's complicated, mainly because it has so many uses. I am in the process of writing a primer for the deck which will go into it in full detail. The main uses are

-Surprise! 11 damage

-reuse of etbs/trigger ltbs

-flash it in to protect something

-instantly turn on bridge, sometimes to give itself champion fodder

-evoke shenanigans

-championing warden so that it comes back ready for battle every time it dies.

The reason I do not run exemplar is mainly the cost. If I do not have soulstoke out it will be at least turn 5 before I can realistically cast it, whereas chaser is still a strong turn 3 play.

Cool deck.

I'd suggest Oath of Nissa to improve consistency over Serum Powder, it could provide even more value with Flickerwisp which can replace Ingot Chewer (is a SB card) and Torrent Elemental.

Have you considered Tyrant of Discord as a fatty to cheat out (maybe from the SB) ?
It can randomnly take out multiple permanents or just a land.

Since the deck lacks removal I'd max out on Shriekmaw and take out Hound of Griselbrand which is decent but not great.

Also, how do you usually use Nova Chaser ?
And why not Supreme Exemplar instead ?

I thought about Hound of Griselbrand that would need two bolts (and a Shocks wouldn't be enough), however I don't like him because of the mana cost, but it's a fine addition. The other option I thought would be Electrostatic Pummeler if you have enough energy, although it would lose it's firepower. Brute Force can save them. You can sideboard those and more options, suggestions are welcomed.

I also realized that, counterintuitively, Undying creatures are effectively immortal if you can saddle them with -1/-1 counters reliably. The counters cancel, so it will come back indefinitely. I added Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, Flayer of the Hatebound, Pyreheart Wolf, Demonlord of Ashmouth, Hound of Griselbrand, and Geralf's Messenger to the list!
