Falkenrath Marauders Discussion

multimedia on Ride of the Vampiries

Hey, this is great, well put together with a plan, +1.

I recommend replacing Vampire Cutthroat with a more impactful one drop Vamp such as Viscera Seer or Shadow Alley Denizen.

Shambling Vent can replace Scoured Barrens and Battlefield Forge can replace Boros Garrison.

I'm not a fan of Kindred Charge it costs too much mana and is the same amount of mana as Edgar. Consider Cover of Darkness to replace Charge.

More draw is something that's needed here. Mentor of the Meek is great when creating tokens. For one mana you can draw a card each time a token is created this is great with Edgar's eminence, Keeper, Sorin and Procession. Mentor can replace Falkenrath Marauders.

More draw suggestions are Phyrexian Arena, Night's Whisper, Painful Truths and Sign in Blood. Black two mana draw two is very good.

Good luck with your deck.

wereotter I agree Falkenrath Exterminator is very good, only problem is the nonbo with Ascendant Evincar being a 1/1 and all.. I'll just have to make sure he's not a 1/1 when I cast the latter haha. Any suggestions as for what to cut?

Falkenrath Marauders feels a tad meh because this deck is geared more towards multiplayer games.. I like Gleam of Battle, however!

The Charm and Make a Stand (particularly the latter since it's easier for me to get) will all be considered. I think Teferi's Protection will come out since tokens disappear permanently when phased out.

There are a few cards they missed out on reprinting that work with the commander to consider. Falkenrath Exterminator gets bigger every time Edgar attacks, which is important since he can start killing creatures for 3 mana once he gets large enough.

Falkenrath Marauders while a little pricy can also become quite the airborne threat as if it attacks with Edgar and connects, gets 3 +1/+1 counters. Additionally, if you want to continue the theme of making your vamps larger, you could look at Gleam of Battle.

Without having played the deck, I will say that it seems to want a lot of vampires, but doesn't have a way to get them back from the graveyard once you lose them. So keeping them alive with a Boros Charm or Make a Stand can help them survive a sweeper effect.

Hey friend. Thanks for thinking of me -- I'm happy to help!

It's a solid build. I don't have any groundbreaking revelations for you, because it's so good. Maybe, just maybe, damage doublers like Insult / Injury/Quest for Pure Flame/Dictate of the Twin Gods/Curse of Bloodletting could help you, as it's essentially a +X/+0 in a different form. Heartless Hidetsugu is definitely one-sided in this deck. Also, I'd think about cutting some of the one-use creatures you have like Ball Lightning in favor of things that grow over time. Falkenrath Marauders comes to mind as one example. Check out my deck @ Blood-Braided Beatdown (Primer) for a very similar concept in Jund colors to see what I mean.

Anyways, hope that helps! Excellent deck.

Unlike previous posters, I actually do like Asylum Visitor, though you'll probably want a Larceny type of effect to buff it.

Blood Baron of Vizkopa is difficult to get as good as you want him to be.

Blood Seeker is pretty whatever against decks that aren't tokens

Cliffhaven Vampire doesn't do enough as a card to justify a precious slot, same with Drana's Emissary. Cliffhaven does combo though, so he may be alright.

Falkenrath Gorger needs support to really get to there, though he can be alright if you get there

Falkenrath Marauders is just a big idiot, with little else to offer, as is Markov Blademaster for the most part

Gifted Aetherborn is likely a tad more defensive than you aim to be, though I'm slightly more a fan of Nighthawk, since flying takes down most dragon-y monsters

Mirri the Cursed is sweet, but not very impactful. I can't fault anyone for wanting to run her though.

Olivia, Mobilized for War has a somewhat steep cost to grant haste, and most of your dudes are vamps already

Tithe Drinker gets a no from me, too

Mardu Banner ought to be Coalition Relic, or at least Commander's Sphere if your budget is tight.

I was never "wowed" by Blade of the Bloodchief in Olivia, myself.

Vampiric Fury doesn't quite cut muster in EDH so far, as vampires lack the token-makers and other cards to truly go wide yet. Along the same lines Stensia Banquet is just a bad card.

Four Sorins is going to be too many, too often. Maybe try trimming one of them to avoid drawing multiples?

If you can swing it, ABUr's and fetches have a silent impact, yet smooth out so many mana issues. Can't reccomend them enough.

That's what I saw in my first glance-through. I'd avoid running cards that only drain/gain life-- even if they're vampires-- and would instead focus on jamming more impactful cards. That said, I still run Baron Sengir for sentimentality reasons, so I can't blame you for wanting to run a few pet cards as well. I've felt for a while now that vampires are as few as two years away from being a legitimately great tribe (not that they're unplayable now), but Wizards needs to show a bit more love to them. They do suffer from a case of split-personality having been Black's iconic and characteristic race at different times. I've been running Olivia since Innistrad, and I feel your pain of making the switch to Mardu, but I'm optimistic that it'll make for a better deck. Cuts are going to be rough though, that's for certain. Check out my list if you need inspiration.

Anyhow, if you have any specific questions or thoughts, feel free to shoot me a message. I usually reply within a week, depending on how busy work gets.Cheers, and God bless.
