Pharika's Libation Discussion

ShiltonCDXX on Mono Black Control

Hey man I've been looking for a good non-black shell to try out and I think this is the one I'll try. It looks like you are able to deal with most threats.

I noticed you mentioned doom decks being a tough matchup and I wondered if Pharika's Libation would deal with that? I think that is blacks only real enchantment removal.

Thanks for the suggestions tru13. Unleash Fury looks especially effective. I’ll test it out.

Against mill, I would think this deck would be strong, considering the reanimation spells and Kroxa. The sideboard is theoretically set up to help in a situation like you described. Pharika's Libation is black’s only answer to enchantments, besides catching it early with Duress or discarding it with Liliana’s +1. I would switch out the self-mill and Embraces to make room.

My primary win con is probably going to be Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Triskelion as I can assemble it easily with Buried Alive + Victimize and it can win right away.

Secondary win con is any of my Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle combos. They take longer to set up, and they don't win right away as the tokens don't have haste; however, I thought it would be a fun combo to try out. That said..additional protection / recursion may necessary if I continue with this combo.

Aetherflux Reservoir + Bolas's Citadel + Sensei's Divining Top. Haven't played with this combo to much yet, but so far top and citadel offer great utility even if I don't assemble all 3 pieces of the win con (Further testing in the works.)

As far as artifact / enchantment removal I currently have Karn Liberated, Ratchet Bomb, and Pharika's Libation. Im considering adding Oblivion Stone or Nevinyrral's Disk. I may play Ugin, the Spirit Dragon if/when I get my hands on one.

I've been considering the Contamination + Bitterblossom lock. It'll depend on how my group reacts to playing against stax.

In standard (Arena) I'm playing a Kroxa-Lurrus Deck which is rather control oriented.

Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger, Burglar Rat, Agonizing Remorse, and Specter's Shriek for hand disruption.

Extinction Event, Pharika's Libation, Angrath's Rampage, and Bedevil are the removal package.

Lurrus of the Dream-Den and Order of Midnight for recursion.

Destroy target nonenchantment, nonland permanent, its controller sacrifices a nonland permanent and discards a card. If fewer than three cards entered their library this turn, Disruption deals 3 damage to that player.

You may cast Disruption from your graveyard.

I'd like to see a similar card, however I'd like it to be two-in-one, either Aftermath/flashback/jumpstart or flip-card, or split card, etc.

BubbRubb4Real: Ground Seal shouldn’t be a huge problem for this deck, since both Kroxa and Underworld Breach still function with it out. Leyline of the Void is trickier, though, and Rest in Peace is even worse. The issue I've had with Mire in Misery is that it requires them to only control one enchantment, it's pretty useless with two enchantments out. Another potential option is Pharika's Libation. But Chaos Warp is my current go-to spot removal for enchantments, and I'd almost rather run another tutor for it instead.

probably too slow, but if the worry is leyline of the void you could always try Pharika's Libation

Also Pharika's Libation is for when I need to remove hexproof or indestructable creatures.

I don't have much advice, since decks that require more than two (occasionally 3) cards to combo off are really hard to pull off, but I can give you some help.

Pharika's Libation is not a good choice here. Anything that gives your opponent a choice of what to do is not good (for example, [this insane matchup that happened a few years back] ( I get the versatility aspect, but hand disruption is your best bet against enchantments. I don't get how you're abusing Lotus Field. Lotus Field is only good in decks where you untap it to get extra mana. Otherwise, it's one of the worst lands in MTG. Replace Evolving Wilds with Fabled Passage (it's simply better), but why even have it when you're a mono-colored deck? They're good for mana-fixing or for triggering sac land effects, but this deck needs neither. What good are your artifacts doing here? Traveler's Amulet is only good in limited as mana-fixing, and Mirror Shield seems off-theme.

Your sideboard is another matter. Agonizing Syphon is rather low-power for the cost. I also can't imagine many situations where you'd sideboard it in. Same deal as before with Lotus Field. I guess Lotus Field is the only way you'd cast Moldervine Reclamation, but frankly that's going to be rare and Moldervine Reclamation isn't great in the first place. Definitely not worth splashing green for.

I like the idea, but I think there are better versions of mono-black sacrifice out there. Your main inhibitor is actually Soulreaper of Mogis. 3 mana for a single activation is steep in how much it stops you from developing your board.
