I run a black oath deck as my pet mono-black deck, he's a great commander with a lot of versatility. Here's a couple cards that might be worthwhile. I like Bloodghast but personally I run Endless Cockroaches just because it's way cheaper and kinda funny. Consuming Vapors is a pretty good way to weed out the board and gain life in the process. Behold the Beyond is a pretty good tutor despite it's cost, and Diabolic Revelation can be a win-con depending on how hard you ramp. I would cut Cellar Door because it's too expensive and unreliable. Stronghold Assassin is a cheaper option in comparison to Attrition and Murder might do you a bit better than Premature Burial. Anowan, the Ruin Sage is good for group sac as is Magus of the Abyss. Archfiend of Depravity helps keep your opponent's board state low. I like Corpse Harvester and Corpse Augur as well. Personally, I'd cut Bloodline Keeper  Flip because for his price he isn't worth it because this isn't a vampire tribal deck. Hell's Caretaker and Doomed Necromancer are good for recursion. Fleshbag Marauder is worthwhile too I think for group sac. I'm also a big fan of Palace Siege and Oversold Cemetery for passive recursion. Flesh Carver has also won me a lot of games, the intimidate is very powerful. I'd consider running Westvale Abbey  Flip as well, potentially a win-con. Shade's Form and Pestilence are also pretty good enchantments. I would substitute Sorin Markov for Torgaar, Famine Incarnate, he's a sac outlet as well as a big body and you can recur his effect and even use it to bring yourself back up to 20 life. Infernal Offering is also a pretty useful card in my experience. Maybe consider Alhammarret's Archive too if you want to make your card draw and life gain more impactful. Those are just a few suggestion, hope it's helpful!! Mono-black is my passion haha

First you have playtest it in some games to see how it performs, find which cards are underperforming and what you are lacking. Then it will be easier to find solutions.
Personally I'd cut the higher costs and try to build my game with cheaper costs. Focus on token production, sacrifice outlets, card draw, ways to use those counters (other than attacking).
Some cards that spring to my mind are:
Smothering Abomination Sac and draw.
Culling Dais Sac and draw.
Skullmulcher Sac and draw.
Deathreap Ritual More draw.
Plaguemaw Beast sac to proliferate.
Titania, Protector of Argoth Huge tokens when you sac lands.
Animation Module tokens for one mana whenever you put a +1/+1 counter.
Heroic Intervention Best reaction available to protect all your stuff in the battlefield.
Ophiomancer A ne token with deathtouch to sac every turn.
Tendershoot Dryad Creates tons of saproling, then buff your saprolings.
Hooded Hydra turn your counters into creatures.
Hangarback Walker turn your counters into flying creatures.
Lifeblood Hydra turn your counters into cards.
Sadistic Hypnotist Sac outlet that locks players hands.
Cultivator of Blades brings tokens, buffs attackers.
Thopter Squadron Counters into thopters. With Mazirek and your Ashnod's Altar get infinite mana.
Noosegraf Mob Pops zombies spending +1/+1 counters.
Flesh Carver Sac outlet that can hit pretty hard.

Thanks for you suggestions Hyperalgialysis, multimedia, and ChaosCommander!

I was considering cutting one of Rise or Legion, since they're so expensive, but I think Rise of the Dark Realms is actually better than Clone Legion, even though legion technically goes infinite with Dualcaster Mage. I play Rise in my Tasigur deck, and it generally wins every game I play it in due to the high amount of GY based decks in my meta.

Chromatic Lantern simply got moved to the maybeboard because I don't own one and they're over $10. This isn't a deck I'm wanting to slam a bunch of money on quite yet, so that's also the reasoning for Patron Wizard and Glen Elendra Archmage, and to a lesser extent Voidmage Prodigy. I own most cards in the list right now because I have the Inalla precon and pre-owned a lot of the cards here.

I think AEther Adept is probably cuttable. It just doesn't usually do enough. I usually look at it wishing it was a Hero's Downfall or Terminate instead, as games in my meta usually go long and having to recast a card isn't that big of a deal.

Dire Fleet Ravager is simply in there because I was looking for wizards with cool ETB effects, and he was new, so I threw him in. I haven't really gotten to testing him yet, but the more I look at him the more I think "I play this and immediately die to whatever's on the other end of the board" because at 40 life it brings me to 18, and I usually won't have a lot of dudes. So out he goes!

Similarly, Flesh Carver and Ghoulcaller Gisa were me looking for cool sac outlets that also happen to be wizards, like Viscera Seer, since I'm losing my tokens anyway. I already own Ghoulcaller Gisa, and although it is a wizard, it doesn't really benefit from one of our only real tribal synergy, Inalla's trigger, outside of turning a wizard into a zombie. She'll probably be cut. But I'm not so sure about Flesh Carver going away, since he can potentially get huge, and requires two removal spells, in addition to being able to use him multiple times a turn and his synergy with our reanimation effects to make more giant horrors.

Out of the counterspells, which ones would you cut? I'm thinking Last Word and Arcane Denial. Maybe Dissipate/Void Shatter, but there's a lot of GY decks in my meta...

Also, what are your thoughts on adding the Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind combos at the end of the description? Should I even bother? And which ones are best?

I'm with multimedia, Rise of the Dark Realms isn't worth keeping. Clone Legion for flavour alone and for that one blowout moment could stay, as long as you know for the most part it will be a total dead drop.

Why aren't you running Chromatic Lantern? Feels like an auto-include for this. I see it in the maybeboard, but it's gotta be in the "OH BABY BOARD" homie. It's so worth running.

Dire Fleet Ravager feels out of place. So does Ghoulcaller Gisa. I get that you're trading the clone for a bunch of zombies and that it's a decent sack outlet, but Wizards aren't big boyz/girlz. They won't generate too many zombs and on top of that, you have to decide on only one. I'd favour Ashnod's Altar or Phyrexian Altar over her. COUNTERPOINT! Purphoros, God of the Forge is a good reason to keep spamming zombies, but then you gotta fun Faces of the Past or Fatestitcher for more Gisa untaps.

You have a lot of countermagic. Why not run Patron Wizard or Voidmage Prodigy or Glen Elendra Archmage? These are good countersticks and they're easier to recur, they fit your tribal needs.

Easy cut decisions for me are Flesh Carver, Dire Fleet Ravager, one or two of the counterspells, Rise of the Dark Realms.

Hey DieKnowMight! It looks like you have a lot of suggestions going on here. I'm no expert on Mardu commanders, but I have a few suggestions!

Magus of the Disk is a cheap wipe that can be brought back by Alesha, as is False Prophet. (He doesn't exile himself, as he is dead.)

Elspeth, Sun's Champion has a wipe on her -2 that replicates the wipe people have been recommending to you.

Dolmen Gate is pretty solid, acting as damage negation similar to Iroas.

Cathars' Crusade acts similar to Gleam of Battle by giving counters. It's considered a commander staple for white, I would suggest picking up a few.

Mother of Runes is another way to protect your commander and can be used offensively to get a free swing in as well!

Stronghold Assassin goes 1 for 1 on creatures with your opponents, worthwhile since you can the creature he sacrifices and him if he dies.

Beetleback Chief is similar to Ponyback Brigade.

Balefire Liege could be useful, but unfortunately, Ashenmoor Liegeand Deathbringer Liege have a power of more than 2.

Oreskos Explorer helps search for lands if you are playing against ramp.

Legion Loyalist gives your tiny guys trample, but more importantly ignores tokens.

Flesh Carver drops a big token after he dies and can sacrifice things.

Load more
