Kaalia, ZenithQueen - Mardu Miracles

Commander / EDH RBW (Mardu)

rebell_son

ANGLES. DEMUNS. DWAGONS

Sup homies. Kaalia, Zenith Seeker is a mardu midrange beatdown deck with thicc flying beaters and a Worldgorger Dragon (WGD) combo backup. The deck also happens to have miracles as a sub-theme.

Why Kaalia, Zenith Seeker over Kaalia of the Vast?

  • ZS is cheaper and has stronger stats, which is relevant when you need to block a Tymna. Being a 3/3 flying vigilance presents a 7 turn clock on an opponent, this can matter in a game that is staxxed out.
  • ZS will not draw nearly as much hate as KotV. If you cast KotV without a pair of Nikes for her, she is not going to survive.
  • ZS’s ETB trigger can give you threats to pressure the board, and potentially fetch Worldgorger Dragon to combo out.

Strategy

PUNCH THE WITCH.
Most games will progress with the same game plan of building up a strong board presence that nets you gradual value and card advantage through cards like Tymna the Weaver and Azra Oddsmaker . It’s ideal to land at least one threat on the board before playing a reactive game with the strong suite of interactions in the deck. Sometimes playing thicc flying creatures and controlling the board will be enough to win the game.

BE THE WITCH
However, once the table has exhausted their resources answering your threats or each other you can attempt to win with the deck’s combo: worldgorger dragon loop. (More on that below)

Kaalia + Scroll Rack
Scroll Rack is the heart of this deck. Zenith Seeker’s ETB can put up to 3 creature cards into your hand; with Scroll Rack you can put them away to the top of your deck and replace them with other cards. If you have a means to then blink Zenith Seeker, you are able to maximize the value of Scroll Rack by digging deeper each time you net more cards in hand. Scroll Rack is also the enabler of all the dirty miracle tricks the deck can do. Blinking / re-casting Kaalia after you rack away cards is a great means of getting rid of cards you don’t want from the top of your deck. If you want to maintain your hand size, then you want to stack one of each tribe on top of your library.

Comboing Out

Worldgorger Combo - Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead / Dance of the Dead  This is deck’s only combo. If you’re not aware of how the combo works, here is a breakdown:

  1. Worldgorger Dragon is in your graveyard.
  2. You cast Animate Dead or Dance of the Dead targeting Worldgorger Dragon.
  3. Worldgorger Dragon is enchanted by either of these auras, and enters the battlefield.
  4. Worldgorger Dragon’s Enter-the-Battlefield trigger to go on the stack.
  5. His triggered ability exiles all other permanents to leave the battlefield.
  6. The aura’s triggered ability goes on the stack, causing Worldgorger Dragon to be sacrificed.
  7. Worldgorger Dragon’s leave play trigger goes on the stack, causing all exiled permanents to enter the battlefield again.
  8. Animate Dead / Dance of the Dead re-enters, and you rinse and repeat and generate infinite mana with the lands entering the battlefield untapped.

Winning with this combo normally requires you to have an additional creature in the graveyard to end the cycle. If you don’t have an additional creature in the graveyard to enchant with Animate Dead or Dance of the Dead, this combo will never end. However, this deck can win without having an additional creature in the graveyard.

Lines to Win

  • If Kaalia is already on the battlefield, then the infinite loop of ETB's will put every Angel, Demon and Dragon from the deck into your hand. Once you have Bogardan Hellkite , flash in the Hellkite in response to one of the ETB triggers from Worldgorger Dragon. Now the loop will also include the Bogardan Hellkite’s ETB ability. Enjoy burning everyone.
  • If Ob Nixilis, the Fallen is on the battlefield, the infinite ETB's of your lands will trigger his landfall ability.
  • If Demanding Dragon is already on the battlefield, the infinite ETB's will kill everyone with Demanding Dragon’s ETB ability when your opponents can no longer sacrifice creatures.
  • If Rune-Scarred Demon is already on the battlefield, use the first ETB from Rune-Scarred Demon to tutor Bogardan Hellkite into your hand. Then when you have enough mana from the combo, flash in the Hellkite.

Card Choices

  • Angel of Condemnation  - Mainly used to gain additional ETB triggers, the exert ability is also valuable sometimes.
  • Angel of Finality  - An answer to graveyard decks. While she doesn’t have flash, the many blink sources in this deck enables AoF to completely shut down a GY combo during their critical turn.
  • Angel of Jubilation  - Aside from being an anthem for a third of the deck, her second line can be surprisingly relevant. She shuts down all fetchlands, phyrexian mana spells, birthing pod, natural order, necropotence. Etc etc.
  • Anger  - Giving all your flying beaters haste is good.
  • Archangel Avacyn     - Protection against boardwipes but also can be a boardwipe if you have an instant speed sacrifice outlet.
  • Archfiend of Ifnir  - Powerful source of board control. With so many means of discarding a card, if Archfiend of Ifnir sticks on a board your opponents are going to struggle with keeping their commanders in play if they don’t remove it.
  • Azra Oddsmaker  - Another all-star of the deck. Normally he is going to help you net an additional card to your hand per combat, but he can also be a discard outlet when necessary. Playing a turn 2 Kaalia followed up by a turn 3 Azra Oddsmaker is a really strong play.
  • Bloodgift Demon  - Targetable Phyrexian Arena on a demon. Yes.
  • Bogardan Hellkite  - Win condition with WGD combo and has flash. Can act as removal if you have enough mana chilling.
  • Demanding Dragon  - Win condition with the WGD combo. His ETB matters later in the game after everyone’s life total has been lowered.
  • Demon of Dark Schemes  - An overall strong demon that can be blinked to wipe the board, and his reanimation ability is repeatable if you have enough mana/energy.
  • Doom Whisperer  - 5 mana for a 6/6 flying trample demon is pretty good. Surveil helps set up miracles, dump creatures into your graveyard, and smooth out your draws.
  • Glorybringer  - Surprisingly excellent source of creature removal. Dealing 4 damage every other turn to a creature without spending mana is surprisingly relevant.
  • Hellkite Tyrant  - While 6 mana is a lot, stealing all of your opponent’s rocks is really strong if he connects.
  • Kaalia of the Vast  - Currently testing in the deck. She’s probably just going to eat a lot of removal.
  • Karmic Guide  - Valuable ETB to reanimate a creature from your graveyard. If any of the WGD combo creature pieces are in the graveyard, Karmic Guide can fetch them out during the loop.
  • Linvala, Keeper of Silence  - All star creature stax.
  • Ob Nixilis, the Fallen  - He’s a win condition with the WGD combo.
  • Rapacious Dragon  - Psuedo-ramp to set up for big turns where you would need additional mana
  • Restoration Angel  - A fetchable blink source that can’t target angels.
  • Rune-Scarred Demon  - Demonic tutor on a demon. Yes.
  • Sephara, Sky's Blade  - Big beater that can be cheated in and gives protection against boardwipes
  • Steel Hellkite  - Excellent beater to remove opponent’s permanents.
  • Tymna the Weaver  - Warper of formats, turns all your flying beaters into draw sources.
  • Worldgorger Dragon  - Our combo piece.

There are a few themes this deck touches on that you can go deeper on if you want to make this deck your own. When you futz with the angel/demon/dragon count, be mindful of keeping the ratio of creature types equal. If you have too much of one tribe it reduces the efficiency of Kaalia's ETB.

Wheels.deck
You can lean harder to the wheels/discard theme and add cards like Burning Inquiry , Spirit of the Labyrinth , Alms Collector , Waste Not .

Blinks.deck
If you like the blink and ETB synergies, add cards like Panharmonicon , Eldrazi Displacer , Ephemerate , Sunblast Angel , Militant Angel

Reanimator.deck
Plus up the reanimation strategy with stuff like Reanimate , Defy Death , Entomb , Exhume , Zombify .
