Kaalia, Zenith Seeker

Legendary Creature — Human Cleric

Flying, vigilance

When Kaalia, Zenith Seeker enters the battlefield, look at the top six cards of your library. You may reveal an Angel card, a Demon card, and/or a Dragon card from among them and put them into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Until end of turn, all Food tokens are no longer artifacts, and become 0/1 creatures with "This creature gets +1/+1 for each other Food on the battlefield."

Make a new Kaalia (Kaalia of the Vast, Kaalia, Zenith Seeker), or make a card that is similar to her flavor-wise (though not necessarily mechanically).

Polaris on How does one interpret "and/or" …

This is an English language question more than a Magic one. sergiodelrio is right here. In Kaalia, Zenith Seeker's ability, each item gets its own article a/an, which denotes that you consider them separately, not as a group.

Let's compare it to the original Kaalia of the Vast, which has similar but crucially different wording: "...you may put an Angel, Demon, or Dragon creature card from you hand onto the battlefield..." Here, there's only one article. You may put a card into the battlefield, and the types tell you what kind of card it can be.

Ghostly Flicker is the same. You pick two targets, and "artifacts, creatures, and/or lands" lets you know that you can pick any combination of those types for your targets, even the same type twice.

Legendxp on How does one interpret "and/or" …

Let's say I cast Ghostly Flicker. Does this mean I can flicker two artifacts, two creatures, AND two lands? Obviously not right?

However, according to "Kaalia, Zenith Seeker",

https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=466964

which says "(You may reveal an Angel card, a Demon card, and/or a Dragon card from among them and put them into your hand.)", you can get all three types of cards from this ability.

So which is it? Does and/or mean you can choose AND or do you have to choose "OR"?

What does this mean for cards that have X in their effect, like Mass Manipulation or Heliod's Intervention? (That's where this originally came up, another player was saying that they could destroy four permanents for four mana at instant speed by playing Heliod's Intervention.)

Also, I was trying to find the exact ruling in the actual rulesbook but I couldn't find it. An official ruling would be appreciated as well.

Kaalia, Righteous Fury

Kaalia story

Yes, I am aware that her 2nd attack trigger will not work directly with her 1st attack trigger, as the creature put into play tapped and attacking isn't declared as an "attacker".

But it's still a very powerful combination. Though Kaalia of the Vast is still more powerful. Kaalia, Zenith Seeker is still relatively weak compared to both. Both Kaalia seek a go-wide strategy that has a lot of flexibility in terms of synergy. This version rewards players for doing just that; The wider you go, the bigger the payoff. Additionally, you get different rewards based upon what you build for, or are able to produce.

Vallaris on What Commanders From MH2 Are …

If I had to pick one, it would be Piru, the Volatile . Love the callback to the original Elder Dragons, and he's in my favourite three-colour combination no less. Honestly though, he's probably going to go into my Kaalia, Zenith Seeker deck which already has a lot of Legendary creatures.

Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar is a close second but already have plans for her to go into my Chainer, Nightmare Adept deck.

I really love what MH2 is putting out but honestly kind of relieved that none of the Legendaries are really making me feel the itch to build a new deck. Most of the cards I'm excited for are things I'd like to add to decks I already have or have been working on.

Oops, I just noticed you said Kaalia, Zenith Seeker , instead of Kaalia of the Vast , my bad. I have never tried to specifically build a deck around Kaalia ZS, although I did use her as support in my KotV deck at one time. After testing, I realized that she is not that useful since the commander deck is 99 cards, and she only digs through 6 cards. It seems like a big deal, but imho, I’d rather run KotV as commander and cast a cheap tutor to search for exactly what I want. Then you get to take advantage of her built-in Quicksilver Amulet .

I rarely find commanders that after I still want to build a couple days after first thinking about them. Kaalia, Zenith Seeker is one of them. The only problem is, I don't know how to build her. I know I could go more Cedh by going turbo Worldgorger Dragon + Animate dead. I could go big beater ramp with the demons/dragons/angels she finds. I could try and cheat beaters in with reanimation or Sneak Attack effects. I could try and go with tons of blink effects and try and use Worldgorger Dragon for value. My current thoughts are Blink/Reanimation, both are powerful tools to utilize, and in most cases if you blink something that was cheated into play for a single turn, you get to keep it. The only problem with this idea is I'm not sure how consistent it would be. Any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks

MULRAH on Angels & Demons

I did a little playtesting with Kaalia, Zenith Seeker at the helm. In the first game, I started with Kaalia of the Vast in my hand and was able to win with the Worldgorger Dragon combo on turn 7, which is pretty good for our casual setting. Even without the combo, I'd already done enough damage by this time to take out one opponent. In the second test, I tried to use Doom Whisperer to dig for this combo on turn five, but it did not work out. By turn seven, I was back up to 33 life, and this time digging was successful but unnecessary since I could win with combat damage on the next turn. My third and final test was a mix of the first two, just a little slower. I got some insane lifegain going and was able to use Peer into the Abyss to draw into the Worldgorger Dragon combo on turn eight, enabling a win on turn nine. A win with combat damage would have been possible a turn later. All in all, it's nice to see these combos working, albeit at a slower pace than they would in a competitive deck. I also like havng the lifegain/angels theme, as I can lean on that instead if opponents are getting sick of the combos.

I then tested the deck with Licia, Sanguine Tribune as the commander. This round got off to a rocky start, as I did not see any black mana till several turns in and had a hand full of expensive cards with no way to get them into play. I was eventually able to goldfish a win on turn ten via combat damage to one player and commander damage to the other. The second game was also pretty slow, as I drew removal and utility spells that are less useful when goldfishing. I eventually got Licia onto the board, which led to a swift win off commander damage to one player on turn eight and then having 40+ life and Felidar Sovereign in play on turn nine. The third playtest at last hit Kaalia's pace, getting the Worldgorger Dragon combo into play on turn seven, producing infinite mana, with which I cast Words of Worship and Well of Lost Dreams. Then I cast Stinging Study, using it to gain 40 life (via Words of Worship) instead of drawing eight cards, but then I could just draw 40 cards with Well of Lost Dreams. Among the many creatures I could put onto the battlefield was Felidar Sovereign, so I presumably could win with it on my next turn. Demanding Dragon was also among the 40 cards drawn, so I guess if I was able to do all of this while Worldgorger Dragon was going off, then I could have cast that immediately for a win on the current turn.

I wrapped things up with a round of playtests using Tariel, Reckoner of Souls . This commander felt kind of useless in the first game, getting cast for +7 life off Angelic Chorus and that's about it. I goldfished with combat damage on turn nine. The second game went more smoothly, but Tariel was still useless; I won without her via combat damage on turn eight and could have won with Felidar Sovereign on turn nine. The final game started with a double mulligan, so I figured I was in for a long game. However, much to my surprise, I drew Dance of the Dead and was able to grab Buried Alive with Varragoth, enabling me to go off with Worldgorger Dragon on turn five. I was able to draw "only" 38 cards, of which Peer into the Abyss was one, leading to a draw of 24 more. With Angelic Chorus, I was able to gain tons of life by emptying my hand and winning with Felidar Sovereign on my next turn. Despite Tariel doing absolutely nothing again, this was the quickest win of all the playtests!

As a result of these tests, I'm realizing I want more targets for Buried Alive, ones that are useful on the other end of a Worldgorger Dragon loop.
