SURPRISE! Deck Update!

Phaetion, 8 years ago

Didn't expect this update, now did you?

-Windscarred Crag: Meh, there's better duals out there. What's 1 life going to do?

-Pearl Medallion and Ruby Medallion: I didn't like taking these out, but this was the Balefire Liege problem all over again; they only benefited a few cards each. I'd sooner have Seal of the Guildpact, but that's not easy on the mana.

-Sword of Fire and Ice: "BLASPHEMY!" you cry, but hear me out: I like the swords, but this one was one of the weaker ones, imo. I really only had it for the card draw, and there are 6 other cards in the deck that can do as good of a job, if not better.

+Plateau: Yes, it returns. I originally took it out as part of the formation of the EDH box, but I decided to reclaim it for this one deck alone. Do not read this as "Oh, hey, he's getting all 10 ABU duals!" I'm not. I'm only doing this for Kalemne.

+Fork: This originally was going to be Haunted Cloak, but I didn't really like it. Brightflame was going to go here, but seeing as it was too conditional and expensive, I'd rather have another copy spell. Since Reverberate is similar, if not the same, as Fork, why not both?

+Mana Crypt: Yes, I acquired one a while ago. And what coolor combination needs better ramp than Boros? Exactly. Crypt will help me power out Kalemne. I was hesitant to add it because of me wanting to avoid being competitive, so will see how it will impact the deck.

+Archangel Avacyn  Flip: The non-planeswalker card I'm most excited to be using. Note that she will transform when one of our 3 evoke creatures hits the bin. The transform will not happen until your next upkeep, so you need to protect Avacyn until then, and that will be the heard part. Regardless, it's hard to not be excited about this card.

Bane of the Skinks

I swaped the Sigiled Skinks for Omenspeakers, and the Wee Dragonauts for Augury Owl for testing. At least they can chump block, if nothing else.

Testing Update

Fishmonger2000, 8 years ago

So I have been swapping some cards about and have had better results while testing. I replaced Skin Invasion  Flip with Insolent Neonate for more madness outlets and a way to get a few extra damage in early game (something I've found useful when trying to close a game out with burn).

I dropped Welcome to the Fold for Brutal Expulsion for extra protection and burn.

I went down a Reckless Scholar and Geistblast for Just the Wind , again, for protection and thing in the ice triggers. Geistblast was not pulling its weight and I would rarely get to combo off it.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Dragons! (SOI update)

snotice, 8 years ago

After a brief period of testing the deck w/o Dragons as the theme, I decided to move back with a new, bolder mindset. I invested in more game-winning type creatures and non-creature spells to give the deck the flavor it needed. So far, it has been pretty effective. Here are some additions made over the last few months:

If you want to Splash BLACK, HERE'S your sideboard

Rasanck, 8 years ago

4 Swamps 3x Evolving WIlds 3x Unnatural Endurance 3x Foul-Tongue Shriek 2x Touch of Moonglove Take out 4 forests, three mountains, and there's your spot for swamps and evolving wilds. I'd recommend dropping 4x Confront the unknown and 1 rush of adrenaline for 3x unnatural endurance and 2x foul-tongue shrieks and then adjust it next game.

If you want to Splash WHITE, HERE'S your sideboard

Rasanck, 8 years ago

4 Plains 3x Evolving WIlds 4x Enshrouding Mist 4x Survive the Night Take out 4 forests, three mountains, and there's your spot for plains and evolving wilds. I'd recommend dropping 4x Confront the unknown for 3x Enshrouding Mist and 1X Survive the night. You can adjust as you see the spells roll. If there's a lot of destroy effects, lean towards Survive the Night. if there's a lot of combat damage that takes creatures out, lean towards Enshrouding Mist

If you want to Splash BLUE, HERE'S your sideboard

Rasanck, 8 years ago

4 Islands 3x Evolving WIlds 4x Glint 4x Essence Flux Take out 4 forests, three mountains, and there's your spot for islands and evolving wilds. I'd recommend dropping 4x Confront the unknown for 4x glint, and leave it at that and then see how that works out.

Multi-player help needed

I own this deck and it works really well... against one opponent. Add in other people and it crashes and burns. Any advice?

Changes....

Turkey_Robinson, 8 years ago

I made a few changes to the deck. I wasn't drawing into enough land so I put in some Mycosynth Wellspring to help with that. The synergy plays well with the Angelic Purge. Also I put in some creatures to help prolong the game so it hits it's stride toward the mid-game. Squadron Hawk and Blade Splicer work well to keep the combat damage to a minimum.. The main goal is to get tokens out and grow them with Intangible Virtue. Having the Ichor Wellspring, Mycosynth Wellspring and tokens from Blade Splicer and Master's Call help ensure the Thopter Spy Network churn out tokens every turn. I lowered the Obelisk of Urd count to 2. This helps a little better in sealing the game later on. I did some playing with it today and it worked great against another midrange deck. Thanks

Shadows over Innistrad update

snotice, 8 years ago

Going through all 297 cards in this new set, I've decided on a few cards that will help improve this deck overall. Here they are:

Alrinn Kord: Having all relevant abilities that will be interesting to test out. The most appealing part I feel is the +1 that grants vigilance (which is great with Archangel of Tithes), haste (which is strong w/ any fatty), and +2/+2 (which is great to get more damage through). It was a worthy $19.95.

Honorable mentions:

Tireless Tracker: The three CMC slot is a very crucial and though he can be an all-star, he doesn't beat out some of the other creatures at around the same CMC.

Archangel Avacyn  Flip: a lot of value with the flash-in protection. The flip side is the burn psuedo-wrath she provides with a non-angel dying. The negatives are the inflated cost. I'm not willing to invest in an 'alright' mythic rare that even at her lowest was about $20. I'll wait.

Cryptolith Rite: an amazing amount of potential in a variety of decks. not sure how it fits within this deck. I've previously tried it out, but not sold yet based on the decks current setup. We'll see.

Ulvenwald Hydra: a potential 7/7 with reach that can grab a value land is nothing to sneeze at. On the other hand, I've been burned by so many hydras that I'm going to hold out on this one and really evaluate its overall impact at 4GG.

Declaration in Stone: a powerful removal spell that isn't on the level of Path to Exile, but does offer the ability to remove mass amounts of tokens at the price of 2 CMC and clue tokens as substitutes. It'll be strongly considered in the future as a way to remove annoying threats like indestructibles, eldrazi, Consecrated Sphinx and generals.

Seasons Past: Sorceries that offer a possible multiple Regrowth is clearly a steal, but at 6 CMC, it is hard to find space for it. I'll have to do more testing with it.

Other additions:

Ajani Steadfast, Basilisk Collar, Nissa, Voice of Zendikar, Needle Spires, Stirring Wildwood, Archangel of Tithes.

Playtesting Update

vyperhand, 8 years ago

So far, this little tribal weenie deck has become the gold standard of my test gauntlet. It's smushing ramp thanks to the anthems taking it out of Kozi's return range. It's just a bit more resilient than Vamps or Eldrazi, and it gets the job done before BW Midrange can set up. Hanweir Militia Captain is just STUPID in multiples, and adding Abbey/Sigarda to that makes for some ridiculous boards to break stalls with. Avacyn oddly has been the weakest card by a small margin. Might pull for another Archangel of Tithes, captain, and consul. Debating a second splash of blue alongside the green to get Reflector mage. Not sure that's worth it, opinions welcome. Stasis Snare over Declaration maindeck because handing out cards has been more painful than adding a mana and gaining instant speed. Will board Declaration against token decks.
