Brutal Expulsion

Brutal Expulsion

Devoid (This card has no color.)

Choose one or both —

  • Return target spell or creature to its owner's hand.
  • Brutal Expulsion deals 2 damage to target creature or planeswalker. If that permanent would be put into a graveyard this turn, exile it instead.

Brutal Expulsion Discussion

A lot of ramp with not enough payoff. You need more big bombs to go with that 1 Pathrazer. Also, the deck needs some removal to be able to combat the opponent's threats. Brutal Expulsion, Reality Hemorrhage, and Touch of the Void could be considered. More lands that produce all 3 colors in the deck would be good also. If you want to stick to your low budget I recommend checking out some Pauper format Eldrazi lists for more ideas. Kozilek's Return and Elder Deep-Fiend also work really well together. Elder Deep-Fiend is a threat that can be cast at Instant speed on the opponents turn that will tap down some of their stuff, like their land early game for example if you can cast the Elder Deep-Fiend with its emerge cost, which you should have no issue doing.

TypicalTimmy on Should Devoid cards be included …

A friend and I were discussing this idea recently. We all know about the color identity rule for EDH - and how there is a special exception for the Extort mechanic as the is part of the oracle text and not the activation.

But what about creatures with Devoid? Take for example Brutal Expulsion . Yes it costs , but it's still a colorless card. Should this be allowed in a colorless deck?

And no, I'm not talking about cards such as Sunforger or Gavony Township - Both of which are colorless yet maintain colored symbols in them.

I'm specifically asking about cards with the Devoid mechanic. E.G. the Eldrazi.

I personally think that if you run an Eldrazi as a Commander, you should be allowed to have access to Devoid cards. That isn't to say that if you run Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger you get to run cards like Sunforger , but rather you DO get to run cards like Complete Disregard . Likewise, this does not grant you access to non-Devoid / colored cards, such as Sylvan Scrying .

There are currently 99 cards with Devoid, which gives quite a lot of extended play and experimenting. I wonder if the vast number of cards with Devoid could off-set the potential power creep? Sure, some cards would immediately become staples. Other cards, not so much. But if you want to go for it, I'd say do it. Literally no different than running a colored Commander and slipping in the Titans in the other 99 as beat sticks.

This idea would only apply if the colorless Commander you run is an Eldrazi. Sorry, but you don't get to do this if you run Hope of Ghirapur , lol.

But what do you all think? Would that make Eldrai decks far too powerful? Or would it be a fun and refreshing new take on an old classic?

EDIT: --- And no, cards with Emerge, like Decimator of the Provinces are not included. There are 13 cards with Emerge, but these are not technically colorless cards and do not contain Devoid to essentially errata them into becoming colorless. Emerge cards are not included in this idea.

Here are my personal recommendations (with help from n8dm) for cards to add and cut from the deck. Let me know if you have any questions about cuts or recommendations.

Let's start with permanents:

  • First off, I'd recomment Cast Through Time, very fun especially with Swarm Intelligence.
  • Talrand, Sky Summoner provides aerial blockers and an alternate win condition in case you can't burn out your opponent.
  • Mizzix of the Izmagnus and Baral, Chief of Compliance are great for cost reduction of spells.
  • Nivix Guildmage is a great copy engine.
  • Guttersnipe helps with burning out your opponent.
  • Mnemonic Wall and Archaeomancer help get back your good spells.
  • The Mirari Conjecture does the same thing as the two above, but it's a saga.
  • Metallurgic Summonings helps with getting out chump blockers.
  • Jaya Ballard is a really great addition to the deck.
  • Finally, Precognition Field is good card filtering.
  • Now for instants and sorceries:

  • I would recommend Crush of Tentacles, as it's the perfect boardwipe for the deck.
  • I'm gonna recommend the burn spell Jaya's Immolating Inferno, it's a personal favorite.
  • Snap is great for double casting to trigger Jori En, Ruin Diver.
  • Scour from Existence, Rapid Hybridization, and Chaos Warp are great instant speed removal.
  • Pull from Tomorrow is an amazing card draw spell that fits the X cost theme.
  • Lastly, Beacon of Tomorrows allows for some easy infinite turns if you draw your whole deck (doable:Pull from Tomorrow copied a few times).
  • Now to recommend some cards to cut:

  • Brutal Expulsion is too expensive for a pretty weak effect, it's essentially an expensive version of a weaker Remand + Shock combo.
  • I would like to question your addition of Clockspinning, as it can really only be applied to 3-4 targets.
  • Fall of the Titans is not the greatest of burn spells. It might seem good, but you'll never be able to cast it at full potential, as playing it for its surge cost does require you to spend mana on another spell.
  • I'd recommend you cut Magma Spray, there's much better removal out there.
  • Refuse isn't that great because you have to get it into your graveyard to take advantage of its aftermath effects, that paired with the fact that its initial effect is pretty weak.
  • Turn is also rather weak in this format.
  • Aphetto Alchemist and Fatestitcher have very limited application here, it seems as if you run them just to support Echo Mage and Pyromancer's Goggles.
  • Pyromancer's Assault is too weak , too much of an investment without enough of a payout.
  • Honden of Infinite Rage and Honden of Seeing Winds could be cut as the floor is too low and the ceiling isn't high enough, you're only running two of them.
  • Touch of the Void is pretty much a sorcery speed 3 drop bolt.
  • Teleportal can be cut seeing as you don't have many creatures that you'll be attacking with. The two you do have, Hypersonic Dragon and Sphinx of the Final Word already have flying.
  • Serpentine Spike is way too expensive. It is indeed a 3 for one, but that's at best for 7 mana. I'd recommend you just use a red boardwipe along the lines of Blasphemous Act.
  • Recoup doesn't do a whole lot, and it's debatably bad.
  • Processor Assault should be cut and replaced with Flame Slash. Flame Slash is half the mana for one less damage, and there's no additional cost.
  • Master the Way - I'm sorry, but that's just not a good card.
  • It'd be a good idea to replace Hanweir Battlements with Reliquary Tower, as Hanweir Battlements is really just a haste enabler here.
  • Crumble to Dust is not a really great card in a singleton format, and it can be replaced with Pillage.
  • Total suggestions: 24 Total suggested cuts: 18 ; As an extra side question, what's the purpose of all the exile?

yeaGO thank you for your haste and vigilance. You're legendary and deserve all the +1/+1's we have to offer! I really do hope we have committed Goryo's Vengeance on these ads depicting Brutal Expulsions unfit for work! Surely the Wrath of God has been our Otherworldly Journey away from risking our necks while on the job!

But in all seriousness, I appreciate how quickly you've responded! Cheers!

If you keep with a low cost list, you'll need some value, you could try, Dynavolt Tower or Thing in the Ice  Flip, but I don't agree about removing all the Pull from Tomorrow or Chandra, Torch of Defiance...

Since you play at instant speed, you might consider playing Brutal Expulsion, Lightning Axe, Hungry Flames, and Fall of the Titans. Also, if your meta is really aggro-based, try playing more Censor main and put Negate to the sideboard...

For your sideboard, I'm not sure about Bedlam Reveler, you could put it main instead, cause side, you'll rarely put it in, same thing for As Foretold... Fiery Temper is great, when you discard it... Your odds are not for it now...

For the other options, Fevered Visions is made for control matchups and as my frieds say "put four or put not". Torrential Gearhulk or Goblin Dark-Dwellers can cast you a surprise Expedite not to neglect...

    STMS on Baral Says 'No'

Unsubstantiate and Brutal Expulsion seem really good with Fevered Visions, especially with your low number of ways to deal with resolved creatures. I would definetly cut coppter for Torrential Gearhulk and how can you build a spells deck without Dig Through Time

You do not have enough lands

    Hope this helps

TypicalTimmy on Can I target Brutal Expulsion …

Brutal Expulsion says I can choose both, and one of the options are "Return target spell or creature to its owner's hand." So can I target it and return the spell to my hand, allowing me to essentially gain infinite uses out of a finite number of cards?
