Pondering

ComputerizedMTG, 8 years ago

Time to clean up the comment section a little bit and wonder if red is worth splashing.

Is Jund really worth running or should I cut red and just opt out for B/G instead. I guess for this I need to check what I am running red for and see if there are alternatives in either Black or Green, or either.

Let's take a look:

-Arlinn Kord  Flip: I feel like this is really more of an enabler than a stand alone card. I don't think she can stand alone and be a threat, like GIdeon can, and I feel like she relies on a creature heavy set up. Therefore I feel like both her + abilities are better suited for G/R decks or token decks where you always have creatures out and are always attacking. Don't get me wrong I have some very aggressive creatures in this deck but I am not looking for an early win here, this deck is supposed to look for a longer game and win through attrition which is where Arlinn falls short in my opinion. Late game she is very vulnerable if I have nothing to protect her, and I don't think the 2/2 wolf she makes would be enough; hence I am thinking of cutting her, the likely hood of me drawing her early are slim so she needs to have impact late game and I feel like she lacks that.

-card:Chandra, the Flameccaller: Obvious bomb and takes over the game on her own. She breaks through most creatures and/or gets damage in. She can give you a new hand, and she can wipe the board. Great card, and does work with what I want the deck to do.

-Sin Prodder: this little guy I think can do work, but only real testing will be able to tell. I like him, I think he adds a fun element to the deck and one of the two reasons I am running red, the other being Chandra; however, he is easily replaceable by Tireless Tracker as they do have the same basic function, if he either under-performs or I cut red.

-Radiant Flames: Well, this can be replace by a number of things in black. The two primary candidates are Flaying Tendrils and Languish.

I am just thinking about this because G/B seems to be solid enough, and I am starting to think that a splashing red is more worth if I go with Traverse the Ulvenwald+Dragonlord Atarka type of stuff.

Man this deck is gross. in 4 rounds I played and won 8 games, against established decks (U/R eldrazi, mono black zombies, b/w midrange, and g/w megamorph).

All the cards in the deck have been great, but the mvp of the night was definitely Knight of the White Orchid. He keeps me from missing lands, he can create clues in combination with Tireless Tracker, and he makes losing the die roll almost desirable lol. Not to mention, being able to cast a knight and a removal spell / 2nd creature on turn 3 is a very powerful tempo swing.

Deck works, check it out if you like, and i would love to hear your ideas.

Updates

Removed: -Bogardan Hellkite: It's ability is semi-nice, but a 5/5 flyer ain't going to be doing too much. -Herald of Leshrac: It's ability is too slow for what it does. -Burnished Hart: Turn 3 I want to play my enabler and turn 4 I want to play Rakdos. This guy takes up both turns which slows things down ironically. -Master of Cruelties: Cool card, but having to attack alone and the fact it will assign no combat damage if it does go through is kind of a no go with the deck. -Mana-Charged Dragon: Once again, a very cool card with some great shenanigan potential but it didn't make the cut. Added: -Coldsteel Heart, Fire Diamond and Charcoal Diamond: The deck was really lacking on ramp and these are the only other rocks (at least to my knowledge) besides the ones in the deck that are under 3 CMC. -Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh: No idea how I overlooked adding this card in here. It's an enabler that can be played turn 3 and can potentially turn into a pretty alright planeswalker. Pretty legit and I also wanted to include another enabler so why not? -Endless One: This one is more for shits n gigs than anything. It'll probably make the cut in the future but a potential 56/56 does sound kind of hilarious for now(if only it had trample...).

4-0 at first SOI FNM!!!

IzzetGod, 8 years ago

I took this deck (after I made the changes) to FNM for the first SOI Standard FNM. I went 4-0 with it and man was it a wild night of MTG! Here's the results of the night:

===accordion ===panel:Round 1: vs Eldrazi. Won 2-0

Game 1 I got stuck on 3 lands but eventually used Read the Bones to get a 4th land and hit Mindwrack Demon. Kolaghan's Command did a lot of hand disruption this game and stopped his small flash creatures. Radiant Flames was also a good card in this matchup.

Game 2 I was stuck on 2 lands and was down to 2 life while he had plenty of lands and was still at 20. I managed to hit him enough with Sylvan Advocate and started getting Land so I can Radiant Flames his fliers away. He than drew into a lot of bad draws and I top decked Sinister Concoction to deal with his last creature to swing for lethal while i lived with 1 life.

===endpanel ===panel:Round 2: vs control. Won 2-1

I expected this matchup to be kinda grindy. Game 1 went to him as his Silkwrap's dealt with my Hangarback Walkers and Anguished Unmaking took out Chandra, Flamecaller.

Game 2 he got stuck on lands and got bad draws off of Read the Bones which allowed me to constantly hit him with Sylvan Advocate.

Game 3 I pulled off a great way to kill Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. I swang with Sylvan Advocate and he blocked with his 2/2 token. This allowed me to change my play of Read the Bones into To the Slaughter to make him sacrifice the Gideon. I then got Chandra, Flamecaller out to start dealing damage. He played Secure the Wastes for 4 and didn't block Chandra's first attack to bring him down to 4 life. He played Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and got an emblem making all his tokens into 2/2's and he killed Chandra, only for me to untap and play another one to kill him that turn.

===endpanel ===panel:Round 3: vs Eldrazi. Won 2-1

Game 1 my opponent kept a 6 land hand but had all 4 copies of Ruins of Oran-Reif and had 2 7/7 Thought-Knot Seer's and a bunch of 5-2 Matter Reshaper's. I drew very little removal this game. He eventually did lethal with Thopter tokens from Hangarback Walker.

Game 2 He got stuck on 3 lands and had a hand full of 4+ CMC Eldrazi's and lands. I easily won this game with Mindwrack Demon. This was the only game I actually payed life for the Demon as I milled 4 land with him which I was completely ok with.

Game 3 he thought he was on the draw and kept a 1 lander. The land was an Island so it was terrible for him. I just curved out and stomped him with Sylvan Advocate, Mindwrack Demon and Goblin Dark-Dwellers

===endpanel ===panel:Round 4: vs control. Won 2-0

Game 1 was really grindy. I had him down to 5 and we ended up at a stalemate where we both had 3-5 cards in hand and had nothing but sorcery speed removal and lands. I had roughly only 15-20 cards left in my deck and top decked Chandra, Flamecaller after he had put himself to 1 life with Ob Nixilis Reignited's loyatly-plus1. The ending was basically who can top deck her first.

Game 2 my opponent needed to play 2 Read the Bones in order to find a 4th land. I was way ahead on board and he didn't find a 6th land to play his Chandra, Flamecaller. Him getting land screwed lead to me dominating the game.

===endpanel ===endaccordion Definitely had a few lucky breaks! The deck I feel is really good. The only reason I like the Green splash is Sylvan Advocate because he's a great early threat that becomes bigger. It allows us to have a man land in Hissing Quagmire who is also one of the better defensive man lands since he has deathtouch. And green is good for some sideboard cards for your meta. This deck could make a couple minor changes as the meta gets settled on what the top decks are. Some cards I don't currently have in the 75 but am thinking of testing out in it are: Ob Nixilis Reignited, Dragonmaster Outcast and Avacyn's Judgment. What do you guys think?

CHANGES!

FlibbertyGib, 8 years ago

Exploding Borders --> Animist's Awakening (I feel like I can get better ramp out of this card) Mind Stone --> Astral Cornucopia (Might not be great, but it's gimmicky and has THREE X's in the cost) Harvest Pyre --> Savage Twister (I like Harvest Pyre for the "delve" cost, but I feel that I need more board wipes. I'll keep an eye on Harvest Pyre) Mold Shambler --> Hangarback Walker (Why do I need to worry about the board? I am the board) Embermaw Hellion --> Orochi Hatchery (Let's try out some swarmy stuff. Embermaw is still on the table) Lava Burst --> Burn from within (Indestructible seems more common than damage prevention) Frenzied Tilling --> NIssa's Renewal (One mana more for two more lands and 7 life. I don't care THAT much about land destruction) Wilderness Elemental --> Detrivore (Ok, maybe I do care about land destruction a bit) Kaervek's Torch --> Squall Line (Need more board wipes and Hostility Enablers) 1 Mountain --> Magnus of the Candelabra (I feel like this is a safe thing to do. I'm going down to 36 lands, but I have a lot of tutors) Caravan Vigil --> Heartbeat of spring (RAAAAMP)

SURPRISE! Deck Update!

Phaetion, 8 years ago

Didn't expect this update, now did you?

-Windscarred Crag: Meh, there's better duals out there. What's 1 life going to do?

-Pearl Medallion and Ruby Medallion: I didn't like taking these out, but this was the Balefire Liege problem all over again; they only benefited a few cards each. I'd sooner have Seal of the Guildpact, but that's not easy on the mana.

-Sword of Fire and Ice: "BLASPHEMY!" you cry, but hear me out: I like the swords, but this one was one of the weaker ones, imo. I really only had it for the card draw, and there are 6 other cards in the deck that can do as good of a job, if not better.

+Plateau: Yes, it returns. I originally took it out as part of the formation of the EDH box, but I decided to reclaim it for this one deck alone. Do not read this as "Oh, hey, he's getting all 10 ABU duals!" I'm not. I'm only doing this for Kalemne.

+Fork: This originally was going to be Haunted Cloak, but I didn't really like it. Brightflame was going to go here, but seeing as it was too conditional and expensive, I'd rather have another copy spell. Since Reverberate is similar, if not the same, as Fork, why not both?

+Mana Crypt: Yes, I acquired one a while ago. And what coolor combination needs better ramp than Boros? Exactly. Crypt will help me power out Kalemne. I was hesitant to add it because of me wanting to avoid being competitive, so will see how it will impact the deck.

+Archangel Avacyn  Flip: The non-planeswalker card I'm most excited to be using. Note that she will transform when one of our 3 evoke creatures hits the bin. The transform will not happen until your next upkeep, so you need to protect Avacyn until then, and that will be the heard part. Regardless, it's hard to not be excited about this card.

Bane of the Skinks

I swaped the Sigiled Skinks for Omenspeakers, and the Wee Dragonauts for Augury Owl for testing. At least they can chump block, if nothing else.
