Maybeboard

I have ceased updating the deck here as of December 2020 and will continue updates on Moxfield!

This deck is designed to be played with my normal playgroup that is not super cutthroat but runs some strong decks. I'd call this a 70% deck.

Update 11.2.2020

It turns out my local meta has developed so that my Animar has a hard time winning games anymore, so I've reintroduced Ancestral Statue, non-red off-color fetchlands and some tutors to bump up the power level. Previous update also involved adding a bunch of counterspells, and I hope the combination of these changes helps rack up more wins from here on.

Update 21.1.2020

I've cut some of the more expensive cards, added a land and reduced the creature count a tiny bit in favor of individually stronger cards. This is due to the fact that in my local meta Animar gathers a lot of targeted hate and board wipes are commonplace; the goal of the changes is to make the deck a little less dependant on the commander and creatures in general.

Update 1.1. 2020:

Primal Surge plans have been scrapped unfortunately. After some thinking I realized that getting to resolve surge would basically win the game on the spot and, while cool, one card win out of nothing is not something I find enjoyable in more casual edh, the format for which this deck is more geared towards.

Update 16.12. 2018:

I've finally decided to cut Ancestral Statue from the deck since when playing the deck I felt it was 99% of the time the best possible avenue for victory, and not going for it when presented the opportunity felt that I'm just prolonging the game for the sake of prolonging it. Therefore I've replaced it with Hardened Scales to add a bit different type of power to the deck. Scales makes Animar a big more explosive in the early game but without the game-ending combo just one card away. We can still assemble an arbitrarily large Animar and Walking Ballista but this time we need Cloudstone Curio and colorless creatures for that.

To easily power up this deck just start by adding Ancestral Statue and turn 1 ramp. When playing this deck I primarily seek to end the game in the combat step instead of comboing out in a non-interactive fashion as I find that that approach results in more fun games for everyone, including yours truly.

Typical games usually involve Animar hitting the table on turn 3 and on the following turn transforming a board of just Animar into 6-10 creature board with full hand of cards. All the creatures with bounce effects (Man-o'-War, Dream Stalker and Shrieking Drake) allow endless amount of shenanigans with the etb value creatures like Eternal Witness, Imperial Recruiter and Solemn Simulacrum. And with Animar on the table each bounce and recast makes future bounces and recasts cheaper. Eventually you have free eldrazi and 2 mana praetors and from there it is usually effortless to put the game away.
