Hydroid Krasis Discussion

pleasefixthisgame on But I wanna play Hydras [Help Needed]

Stuff I'd consider in no particular order.

Nature's Lore

Voracious Hydra

Steelbane Hydra - this one in particular has what you're looking for in enchantment hate, but I'll have a section specifically for that too.

Curse of the Swine

Hydroid Krasis - a little above your price range, but a fantastic hydra.

Elementalist's Palette

Lifeblood Hydra - just under 10 bucks, definitely a solid upgrade.

Vorel of the Hull Clade

Evolution Sage

Death Denied

Three Visits

Skyshroud Claim

Explosive Vegetation

Exponential Growth

Greater Good

Unbound Flourishing

I'd also consider looking up all the different duals that show up in sultai and picking up some of the cheaper ones? I google "word for the color identity of the deck I'm playing and dual lands" and theres a few sites there generally with prices. Also going up like, 3/4 more lands since 33 seems slim and you don't have a lot of mana rocks/dorks to shore that up.

enchantment removal I've used/like/I think would be good here.

Krosan Grip

Gaze of Granite

Pest Infestation

Sultai Charm

Maelstrom Pulse

Molder

Windgrace's Judgment

As for stuff I'd cut.

Edge of Autumn - theres better ramp cards and I suggested a few above

Grow from the Ashes - see above

Font of Fertility - see above

Frontier Siege - this seems kinda medium if all were doing with it is adding 2 extra mana, I like that it's modal but you're never going to pick that mode since we don't have a lot of flyers in hydras.

Icy Blast - I see where you're coming from with this, and I think it could definitely put in work, but I also feel like theres probably either hard removal that you could play for the same amount of mana that would make this useful, or something similar.

Personally I'd also cut the counter spells for more stuff that draws/removes but I understand why they're here.

I hope this helps, sorry if it's long winded, and good luck with the list!!

edster on Synergies with Unbound Flourishing in Modern

Been testing unbound with newer cards and other deck lists: https://www.reddit.com/r/ModernMagic/comments/mdkh1w/ug_unbound_flourishing_tron/ https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/against-the-odds-unbound-wealth-modern-magic-online

Feels like Hydroid Krasis belongs in Game Winning. The value of a 2x/2x Flying Trample, draw x gain x is too much for most decks to come back from. Same for Walking Ballista, it's a great card all game. It can block then sac against aggro, disrupt creature combos and kill your opponent in the late game.

Magus of the Candelabra from testing feels like Great or even Game Winning. The copy goes on the stack, so you can target the same land twice. E.g. x=1, target Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, copy also targets Nykthos. Use Nykthos once after copy resolves, and again after original ability resolves. If you have lands that produce more than one mana, such as Castle Garenbrig, Nissa, Who Shakes the World, Utopia Sprawl, Magus becomes insane.

Prismatic Ending would be god tier but the number of colors (converge cost) isn't copied. The copy can only exile a 0 cost nonland. This card is amazing even without unbounded. Probably belongs in Poor tho.

Repeal could be upgraded from Poor to Neutral / Good. Any card that double cantrips with Unbounded is decent. From my own testing and decks in the link above, it does well.

Shatterskull Smashing  Flip, Agadeem's Awakening  Flip and other modal lands are Good in the right decks.

The problem with cards like Genesis Wave, Vivien's Arkbow, Electrodominance, Fiend Artisan etc that put a card into the battlefield is your deck probably has cards with cost {x}. You have to pick x=0, so you have some dis-synergy. For that reason, unless you build around this, losing out on some really great {x} cost cards, they go down one synergy rating in my books. They are still great but not perfect. ;]

Animist's Awakening is a trap. I think it belongs in Neutral or Good in landfall decks. In a deck with 30 lands (which I doubt), without unbound you expect x/2 lands since half your deck is lands. With unbound, you expect x lands so pretty much it doubles your number of lands. Sure it gives you back your mana this turn and double next turn, but it doesn't quite affect the board state enough compared to other cards.

cards like Windrider Eel fit the land fall deck architype, but I feel have too low impact on a game of commander. Like lets play best case scenario you get like 3 or 4 land fall triggers, cool now this thing is a big old 10/10. Either Ouch, or it gets blocked by like a 1/1 flyer. I feel like there could be cards that better impact the board state.

Other Cards that you could consider cutting

  1. Borderland Ranger , Jungle Wayfinder => Farhaven Elf , Wood Elves (just strictly better)
  2. Burnished Hart , Dryad Greenseeker , Solemn Simulacrum are not bad, but I think you can do better in green
  3. Embodiment of Insight I like where you headspace is at here but they only create them for a turn. If they were permanently 3/3 I'd be 100% for it.
  4. Hungering Hydra => Hydroid Krasis
  5. Silkwing Scout => Embodiment of Spring (One mana cheaper overall), and I don't think the body is relevant

Other Cards that you could consider adding

  1. Lore Weaver , if you have a Ley Weaver that draws a card on etb that is pretty cool. Also Lore Weaver is a mana sink which with all the lands you are producing is a good thing.

Lanzo493: So you'd spent 10,000 mana and 10,000 more? And you'd cast Hydroid Krasis for 10,004? (I'm not messing with you, but I'm quoting a Youtubee who does MtG song parodies. Maybe take a look?)

It may be worth checking some of the old wolf run lists out from the back in 2010ish times (my favorite time to play magic in standard, such good memories).

Inkmoth Nexus as a 1 of may be a fun win con, something to help out.

You have a ton of ramp, I would love to see more done with it. I have suggestions, but I also see the argument against them to try and keep the deck mono green and the land base easy.

You do have the capabilities of running certain non green cards as long as they only have one non-green mana cost, it may be worth running 2-3 Breeding Pool s and Stomping Ground (which you have, another may help)

Bonfire of the Damned , I played in an IQ way back when and added 3 of this card for fun to my Jund Beats list, I made top 8 going undefeated until the first round with rough luck and Bonfire was just incredible. Board wipe and damage on them. 2-3 may help a bit for wiping out opponent's fields.

Hydroid Krasis : I am running this in my blue green tron list, life gain, draw, and a huge body, it is perfect for huge ramp lists.

Blightsteel Colossus , Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger , either as a 1-of at the top could be a great win con.

Finale of Devastation might be a good 2-of, mana outlet and a win con, let's you fetch a fatty and blow your opponent out, that might also allow you to run a few old-growth trolls over the empaths.

These are just suggestions and I can understand counterpoints, you've obviously played this list a ton and know its ins and outs. For me at a cursory glance it just seems like you have huge mana ramp potential with little outlets. When I play ramp, I want to be able to use all the mana I have to railroad my opponent.

I've been on the receiving end of my friend's Pir and Toothy deck many a time! Some food for thought!

I've seen some good plays come from cards that move around +1/+1 counters, things like Nesting Grounds , Forgotten Ancient get nutty when you have doubling season or anything like Hardened Scales around. Spike Weaver is another card that I don't see getting a lot of love, particularly if you have ways to give it +1/+1 counters, can help stall creature based swarm decks to get you to the late game!

Also, not sure if budget is an issue, but Hydroid Krasis is like a Nimbus Swimmer with benefits!

I would cut Hydroid Krasis and Courser of Kruphix and get some Brazen Borrower s and possibly more Bonecrusher Giant in there. You could also cut Chandra and Teferi.

Fierce Empath and Foul Emissary are nice creatures to emerge with.

I would also run more Sanctum of Ugin so you can chain Deep Fiends together and keep tapping stuff.

Hello rog0325. Sorry for taking a while to respond.

It looks like you made some adjustments to your deck already and it is looking better. I Would try to add another copy of Nissa, Who Shakes the World to your deck and maybe 1 more Cultivate . The reason for these additions is they will help your Hydroid Krasis become a much stronger payoff if you play it after resolving the previously mentioned cards.

To make room for the cards, I would personally cut Courage in Crisis or Stealth Mission .

I hope the deck is working out for you if you have had a chance to try it with the changes.
