Oath of Liliana Discussion

I have a Grixis SF deck and I consider it tribal when you get to 25+ of the type (angels, demons, planeswalkers etc).

The Elderspell , Yawgmoth's Vile Offering , Toxic Deluge , Command the Dreadhorde , Oath of Liliana , Scheming Symmetry

Lotus Ramp Example List:

Example curve:

  • t1 land, Elvish Reclaimer

  • t2 land, sylvan scrying

  • t3 land, Kiora

  • t4 use Reclaimer to jam Lotus, untap lotus with Kiora, Pore over the pages and Vizer to sift through your deck a bunch of times until you can jam Pelakka wurm.

That is, of course, a rough draft.

Wishclaw Blink exmaple deck:

Plus some stuff, get to 80 cards, add Yorion in SB as companion, eventually win with token flood.

I want you to look at those too first-draft fairly optimized decks. Take a really good look. I want you to count the number of cards that are in both decks.

Now, I want you to do this exercise: guess how many cards in the lotus ramp deck can go in the wishclaw deck, and how many cards from the wishclaw deck can go in the lotus ramp deck.

Tell me your answer, and we'll see if you're right.

A perhaps other and more effective replacement for Oath of Liliana by the way: Tainted AEther ;)

The candidates I would look at would be Aura of Silence and Blind Obedience , perhaps swapped for Act of Authority which is a beautiful ETB for Aminatou EVEN if you use it twice. Less tax, more exile, minus one card. The other one might be Oath of Liliana unless you find those tokens very useful. But that would be pretty harmless for getting a much stronger effect in, I think.

Out of curiosity, why not run one Oath of Liliana? It has the same effect as the edict cartouche and can create quite a few blockers for your walkers.

Additionally, in case you were thinking of just blinking Aminatou, the Fateshifter to fulfill the "planeswalker entered the battleflied under your control this turn" clause, that won't work. The trigger to return the planeswalker has the same timing as Oath of Liliana, but the Oath has an "intervening if" clause. What this means is when the End Step rolls around, you'll check if the if condition is true before deciding if it triggers. As you're checking this when your putting Yorion, Sky Nomad's ability on the stack, the answer's going to be no so you won't get to put Oath of Liliana's ability on the stack.

For intervening if clauses, the condition needs to be true both when it triggers so that it actually triggers, and when it resolves. That's not super important in this case as if Oath of Liliana's if condition is met for it to trigger, it's not going to stop being true when it tries to resolve, but it's something to be aware of for other abilities.
