Need Flavor Judges With a Large Knowledge Pool of Cards

Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on Sept. 21, 2015, 11:39 p.m. by Spootyone

Hey all. I've been wanting to build a "flavor" EDH deck for a while now (i.e. the deck focuses on vorthos-worthy cards versus straight up GOOD cards).

The planned Commander will be Karametra, God of Harvests. I work with plants IRL and am working towards becoming a Horticulturist/Botanist so I'm a real plant nerd. Anyway, the premise of the deck is for it to focus entirely around plants, farming, botany, etc. A good example of cards that could fit with the theme are Reap What Is Sown, Elvish Farmer or Swords to Plowshares. Alternatively, the deck could easily contain actual plants such as Phytohydra, Sprouting Phytohydra, etc.

The problem with using Gatherer for something like this is that I can't search by "flavor", if you get what I'm saying. I haven't been playing this game for more than 3 or so years so my card pool knowledge leaves much to be desired. So I ask this of the community: Please could you give me any and all examples of cards that could potentially fit with this theme? Don't be afraid of whether it's good or not.

Thank you in advance

Would Caryatids like Carven Caryatid and Sylvan Caryatid be acceptable?

Also, how about Dryads?

Lastly, Druids? (they are in tune with nature and growing things)

Genesis Hydra and Genesis Wave as well, could be considered.

Sylvan Caryatid absolutely does since it's a plant.

Carven Caryatid I will say yes to since it's effectively the same deal.

Dryads are...probably okay. Though they may get bumped out if there happen to be enough cards that are more in flavor. Druids..I'd say pretty much the same thing.

I think the hard part is going to be finding niche cards that have names which fit like the aforementioned Reap What Is Sown.

Is it alright if I suggest flavorful cards of the cards I think could merit a spot in a deck for Karametra with vorthos aside? My suggestions would be mostly "I guess that kinda fits the theme" cards. I could also suggest good cards for a saproling tribal deck (and even a commander for that, I think).

What about equipments? Sharpened Pitchfork, Heavy Mattock, Blight Sickle, and Trusty Machete would fit the farming theme.

FancyTuesday PERFECT response. Thank you a ton. And avenger for sure since it has plant synergy. Regal force is great but will be a maybe until I know I'll have a slot for it.

What, you don't feel like playing in hard mode?

Early Harvest could be good, both thematically and funcionally. Crop Rotation is super solid, especially for triggering landfall.

Lol. Well...that will be my last resort :P

I like both of those suggestions.

I have a friend who built a "people wearing hats" deck. So not only the card, but card art was important. Count your blessings :P

Ah, I love these types of decks! Here are some ideas (I apologize if any have already been said): Carpet of Flowers, Mulch, Burgeoning, Land Tax, Life from the Loam, Elephant Grass, Spreading Algae, Creeping Mold, Plow Under, Wild Growth, Harrow, Overgrowth, Elvish Farmer, Diligent Farmhand, Farmstead, Remote Farm, Vagrant Plowbeasts, Yoked Ox, Yoked Plowbeast, Zodiac Horse, Zodiac Rooster.

There are a lot of options in with the golgari guild as well, should you ever dip into black. Hope this helps some :)

I'm noticing this theme is rarely gonna use colors outside green. Are you open to shifting colors? Here are all the commanders I think fit your theme and are also good as commanders:

Although, I have to mention Nemata, Grove Guardian has a name, subtype, AND text that are each individually on theme, even though I'm not impressed with it as a card. ("Grove guardian", "treefolk", & "saproling".)

I feel like I've got to start at the colors being absolutely certain before suggesting cards.

There was an article that was posted a while back that was about a Karametra farming deck. Maybe look at that for some inspiration?

Totally look up the Fungus cards. There are some awesome Thallids in green and white.

My other suggestions have mostly been said, but also Undergrowth Champion seems fitting.

I believe a deck I have made might have a decent number of cards you would be interested in. Quite a few of them weren't listed here, so I'll just post a link.

I would also run Natural Connection from BFZ. It feels sort of farmish to me. there's also a lot of shepherd cards if you wanted to go down that route ex. Springjack Shepherd also I personally think Meadowboon is farmy
