Description

Fully optimized Hermit Druid combo deck. It wins by turn 3 95% of the time in a vacuum. Turn one wins are difficult, but possible with the proper starting hand.

The strategy is simple: Activate Hermit Druid, win. A single activaiton pitches the entire library and puts Narcomoeba into play. Fatestitcher can also be unearthed if a third creature is needed. Dread Return is then cast from graveyard targeting Necrotic Ooze. Several other important creatures will be entombed alongside Necrotic Ooze, namely Morselhoarder and Devoted Druid. Together, they form an infinite mana combo. From there, it's a simply matter of Nooze killing everyone through infinite activations of Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius . Any important parts of the combo that accidentally wind up in hand can be discarded via Lotleth Troll.

The great thing about this combo is that it can be assembled a multitude of ways. Aside from Druid and Cephalid Illusionist + Lightning Greaves, it can also be put into play using Intuition, Buried Alive, Survival of the Fittest, and fauana shaman. Getting Devoted Druid and Hoarder into the GY and Nooze into play via casting or reanimating is all it takes. From there, Scion can be cast. He entombs Skyrthix and Niv-Mizzet to once again deal infinite damage through pings.

The deck is ingrained with a fair amount of combo protection. Silence effects prevent interference outright. Force of Will and Pact of Negation make sure dread return resolves. Apprentice Necromancer returns Hermit to the field and gives him haste if he gets countered. Memory's Journey saves the day if the combo is interrupted after Hermit goes off.

If the combo still somehow doesn't go off, Scion makes himself an excellent stand-alone win condition. Not only can he be cast to one-hit one opponent thanks to the Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon + Moltensteel Dragon combo. He can also be used to entomb Worldgorger Dragon. The deck runs three enchantment-based reanimator effects. Having any one of those in hand allows me to reanimate Worldgorger, once again generating infinite mana, which once again allows me to entomb Niv and ping everyone to death.

How is the win condition you subscribed better than Dread Returning Angel of Glory's Rise to get back Laboratory Maniac and Azami, Lady of Scrolls? It seems like a more resilient win condition than any kind of Necrotic Ooze combo since it gets around effects that would give the opponents hexproof or shroud, make them untargetable, prevent damage, etc.

@Gates: Because the Angel combo is a lot bulkier. And doesn't have any synergy with Scion. This combo can be assembled much more easily off Intuition, Buried Alive, Survival, and Fauna Shaman as mentioned in the description. Also, the infinite mana + Niv combo overlaps as both a finisher for Nooze AND as a finisher for Worldgorger.

I was running Angel combo at one point. This is a strict upgrade.

I would also like to state the the Angel combo can be stopped by Torpor Orb, while the other one can't.

NarejED, if your group doesn't allow infinite combos, would the Azami and lab man combo be the best, or is there another one that could be better?

Any particular reason why you run Lotleth Troll over Putrid Imp?

Visage_EDH Probably so that he can tutor for it with Muddle the Mixture.

This might be a silly question, but does Intuition just find Hermit Druid and 2 reanimation spells?

Not usually. Depending on the composition of your hand (combo pieces, discard outlets, etc), it's often possible to get Nooze, Morselhoarder, and Devoted Druid into your GY. Getting Nooze into play from there nets infinite mana, which can be used to cast Scion to entomb Niz-Mizzle and win. But if you don't have some sort of discard outlet or other enabler in hand, then yes, Druid + Shallow Grave + Postmortem Lunge can be a common setup.

what do you do if your Dread Return gets countered after your whole library is in your graveyard?

Shadow02 you use Memory's Journey to protect the combo and have something to draw into the following turn.

Why is Caustic Caterpillar better than, say, Naturalize?

Why does Skyrthix have to go into the graveyard too? I would assume that Niv-Mizzet would be enough with infinite mana?

Also, you removed the Lightning Greaver + Cephalid Illusionist combo, why?

And what are you thought on getting Protean Hulk into the deck?

Great deck, I think I will build it, after you answer these questions (that is, if you want to answer them :) )

This might sound stupid, but how does Necrotic Ooze get haste?

sorry, that's what skittles is for =P, still why not anger?no mana required.

As a Druid player, Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is a late-game finisher. You cast Scion of the Ur-Dragon, use his ability twice to get Moltensteel Dragon (pump +6/+0 with 12 life), then get Skittles. This makes Scion a 10/4 flying infect. Protean Hulk requires too many cards that don't do anything without the hulk himself, and you'd rather just tutor for Hermit Druid. I took Cephalid Illusionist out because my version doesn't play enough creatures to support the combo, and rather just play more ways to get hermy back if it dies (would highly recommend Claim / Fame). Necrotic Ooze doesn't need haste because Devoted Druid, Morselhoarder, and Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind don't need to tap to make infinite mana. To answer my own question from a lot earlier, Caustic Caterpillar is good if you topdeck a creature tutor and have to kill a Leyline of the Void or something.

Correction: meant to say Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius not Firemind.
