One Man Armory - Voltron EDH

Commander / EDH Mono-White Multiplayer Voltron

Mono White equipment Voltron! Who doesn't love a supercharged battering ram?! Equipment has always been one of my favorite deck archetypes, and mono white happens to be my favorite color! This is a deck I have been tinkering with for the better part of four years, and has come a long way since its creation!

I would like to start out by saying, while this is not the most resilient deck if it gets hated out by removal, this deck is meant to be a fast paced, one shot on a stick type of deck. You get the bonus of being in a mono color, so we never really get mana screwed! If you like the idea of a commander that when the defending player asks you on turn 5, "What exactly are you attacking me with?", you can respond, "It is a 16/13 with Double Strike, Lifelink, Trample, Haste, Shroud, Unblockable, Indestructible, and whenever it deals combat damage to a player I draw a card and deal 2 damage to target creature or player..." Then Balan, Wandering Knight is definitely the commander for you!

My build is heavily focused around Balan, Wandering Knight killing with commander damage. There are other builds out there that run more creatures such as Mirran Crusader or Etched Champion as sword bearers. This is not one of those decks. We are all in on the one shot mentality.

We may be playing mono white, but don't be mistaken, this deck is a force to reckoned with. Powering out a few equipment on our early turns, we can drop Balan on top of a mini armory. If one of those equipment gives haste, it is not uncommon to be able to one shot someone at the table the turn that you drop her (yes, Balan is a girl) MTG Wiki.

While it is (very) fun to try and one shot someone early, patience can be a virtue. Once people have seen what Balan is capable of, she can be targeted with a lot of removal right when he hits the board. The power of her ability to equip her entire arsenal at instant speed cannot be understated, and you want to use the stack as your friend. I cannot count the number of times I have the equipment in play to go and one shot someone, cast Balan, go to equip for , and an opponent casts removal in response. Instances like these can set us back 2-3 turns if we are unlucky, so it is very important to be aware of the possibility of instant speed removal, and play around it accordingly.

This deck has some majors strengths. As stated previously, it is mono color, so we never have trouble casting our spells. It is low curve, so we are generally pretty fast out of the gate. We run a lot of protection, so we don't have to be too scared of our opponent's removal removal. We run a good amount of recursion in the event our swords hit the yard. And most importantly, we have the most well equipped arsenal in all of Phyrexia.

Cards such as Austere Command or Vandalblast that sweep our entire arsenal into the scrap heap can be a pain to deal with. We run a bit out counter-play to these sweepers such as a well timed Teferi's Protection or Second Sunrise. Artifact sweepers are by far our greatest weakness, so the more countermeasures we can run, the better.

All this said, Balan can truly be a blast to play! I would highly recommend her to anyone who enjoys the equipment and/or voltron theme, she lends herself to it perfectly.

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy the list! Feel free to leave any comments, recommendations, or questions down below. MANY cards have cycled through this deck over the years, so if you feel something is missing, it is quite possible I have an answer as to why it didn't quite make the cut.
