Original Concept Overview Show

I pulled a foil narset in my booster box so I'm going to try my hand at a EDH deck with her.

After tweaking with the concept I decided to go for artifact ramp. Artifact ramp serves 2 purposes: limits lands (which are mostly dead draws once narset is on the field) and gets her out on the field faster. It also means I can destroy all lands without really caring.

From there I have a few creature board wipes, land board wipes, and utility cards like Winter Orb, Feroz's Ban which slow the game down for my opponents far more than for myself. Darksteel Forge protects my artifacts.

A number of cards are dedicated to protecting Narset so she isn't killed in combat: Shield of Kaldra, Darksteel Plate, Aqueous Form, Gift of Immortality, Holy Mantle , Indestructibility, Reconnaissance, Spirit Mantle , Ajani's Presence , Boros Charm (all permanents - great for land board wipes), Rogue's Passage

The rest is rather self-explanatory. When this deck gets board control it ends up not giving it up too easily just because opponents have to deal with a lot of protecting cards with only minimal mana to work with.

Pros Show

• Resilient with built in hexproof

• Can virtually end the game as soon as she attacks

• Don't need to wait until turn 6 to get her out with artifact ramp.

Cons Show

• The first turn she's out can be dicey.

• Cards that force you to sacrifice a creature (IE Fleshbag Marauder) can be a problem if you don't have mana to recast.

• Your friends will hate you.

Ramp Cards with Description Show

• Colorless: Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Thran Dynamo, Worn Powerstone - All incredibly mana efficient. Not much more needs to be said

• "Ramos": Heart of Ramos , Eye of Ramos , Tooth of Ramos - These are all deceptively efficient. They don't come into play tapped and you can sacrifice them for an additional mana after tapping for mana. The sacrifice function tends to get Narset out sooner which enables board lockdown sooner.

• Colored mana with one shot: Pentad Prism , Lotus Petal - Pentad Prism is a deceptively good tempo mana source considering you pay 2 colored mana to get back 2 later. The lotus petal speaks for itself.

• Other Colored Ramp: Boros Signet, Azorius Signet, Izzet Signet, Gilded Lotus, Mox Opal, Chromatic Lantern, Fellwar Stone - All incredibly useful. Not much more needs to be said.

With all of this ramp it isn't uncommon to have Narset out by turn 3 or 4 and swinging by 5, even though I've drastically cut lands compared to a normal deck.

Making the most of Narset's ability Show

• Additional Combat Phases: World at War, Relentless Assault , Aggravated Assault, Seize the Day coupled with Mirari , Increasing Vengeance, Howl of the Horde can yield turns with 3-4 combat phases.

• Honorable Mention: Strionic Resonator - Doubles the cards you can look at per attack.

Slowing the game for opponents Show

• Land Board Wipes: Armageddon, Boom/Bust , Sunder, Jokulhaups - Once Narset is on the field and I have a few artifacts for ramping, I really don't care about my lands anymore. I certainly don't want opponents to have lands. Honorable mention: Winter Orb

• Creature Board Wipes: Jokulhaups, Mass Calcify , Winds of Rath, Phyrexian Rebirth, Supreme Verdict - All useful once Narset has indestructible. Smoke has similar functionality.

• Taxing opponents: Feroz's Ban , Norn's Annex, Propaganda, Sphere of Safety - All make things extremely annoying on creature based decks especially when opponents need to use mana to deal with other threats.

Walkers Show

It's bad enough all of the stuff that opponents need to respond to while their board state instantly evaporates. Some of the walkers are threats that can get out of control if not dealt with quickly.

• Karn Liberated: Exiles stuff, super annoying

• Venser, the Sojourner: Can exile narset to protect from a board wipe or use his -1 for her evasion if needed. Plus, the ultimate can get things out of control.

• Gideon Jura: Just tanks stuff so I don't have to or my other walkers don't have to. Good guy Jura takes one for Team America.

• Chandra, the Firebrand: Decent +1, insane -2 for this deck. Nothing can be more annoying to opponents than seeing me get another combat with Narset and flooding the board with even more threats.

• Ajani Vengeant: Very solid +1. It synergizes with all of the other locks in this deck.

• Ral Zarek: Similar boat as Ajani's +1. I like his more for the extra utility. His ultimate can win the game.

• Jace, Architect of Thought: Useful +1 against aggro.

• Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker : Solid +1 to augment Narset.

Miscellaneous Utility Cards Show

• Brainstorm: Instant speed, puts stuff from my hand onto library where narset can cast for free.

• Long-Term Plans: Staple for any narset deck. Nothing else needs to be said.

• Darksteel Forge: Protects all of my artifacts.

• Omniscience: After destroying all lands, it helps to be able to cast whatever bombs end up in my hand for free.

• Voltaic Key: Effectively doubles the use of quite a number of my artifacts.

• Soothsaying : Organizes the deck to make sure I'm getting the cards I want with Narset.

• Vedalken Orrery Flash is useful once Narset is attacking and you grab some sorceries/enchantments/artifacts.

• Boros Charm All permanents indestructible at instant speed to mostly protect myself from my own wipes.
