Hi! I'm a longtime commander player and this is my Neheb spellslinging burn deck.

The strategy is pretty simple.

Just get a lot of mana and burn your opponents for X=40.

Basic Mono-Red Deck Philosophy Show

Storytime!

This deck has its roots from my time spent with a local playgroup running a Commander variant called Kingdoms (a 5+ player variant that somewhat resembles Two-Headed Giant.) The various rules changes in Kingdoms disable alternate wincons like Laboratory Maniac and Felidar Sovereign and discourage infinite combos, although they aren't outright banned. The format instead rewards decks that can quickly and easily delete individual opponents.

As you might imagine, a Johnny, Combo Player like me wanted to figure out how to break the format. So I designed a Mizzix of the Izmagnus deck with zero infinite combos that could nonetheless drop Comet Storm onto the stack for 40+ damage to multiple opponents. This did not make me any friends.

Fast-forward to the present day and the deck has grown into a regular EDH deck with Neheb, the Eternal in the zone. While the non-blue variant of this deck lacks access to blue countermagic and efficient card draw , it makes up for that with a much more dynamic commander that can set up lethal burn damage in an incredible hurry.

And while I've added in a couple potential infinite combos in the form of Aggravated Assault and Reiterate , this deck still wins via finite damage off X-spells. And it's worth noting that even for a mono-red deck, we can look to play politics to an impressive degree: "Hey, so I can kill one opponent this turn. What protection can y'all offer me in exchange for the power to choose who takes 40 damage?" It's impressive how often you can talk people into letting Neheb hit them if you explain in detail precisely how you're going to spend the 4 mana.

You should play this deck if:

--You like killing players.

--You enjoy the political power of being the assassin that kills players.

--You like winning games, or at least getting to choose who wins or loses.

--You enjoy the idea of playing a combo-ey deck that doesn't rely on infinite mana.

--You're interested in the challenge of playing a stormy spellslinger deck without blue or black in its color identity.

Rituals...? Show

Once Neheb, the Eternal is sitting around, all burn damage in precombat/combat becomes a ritual. So we're really talking about cheap burn effects we can play with Neheb sitting around. And I do mean cheap; the less mana we spend per point of damage dealt, the more mana we have left to protect Neheb and pump up burn spells.

Pyrohemia is the golden standard for this deck. If it isn't as efficient as "spend 1, refund 3 later" then it really isn't worth running. Pyrohemia's flexibility is incredibly good as well: it can be both the ritual to generate mana and the outlet to spend said mana, and it also scythes down opposing aggro decks in the process.

Chandra's Ignition Ignition is very good if cast on Neheb but amazing if cast on Syr Carah, the Bold , since she gets to impulse-draw so many cards.

Heartless Hidetsugu Hidetsugu is a dangerous card and a nonbo with damage-doubling effects like Furnace of Rath but also a great way to get 60+ mana floating.

This deck also plays a couple of straight-up rituals because Neheb is a lightning rod :

Mana Geyser The main payload for Reiterate but also a good way to get 20+ mana sans Neheb.

Jeska's Will Infinite Reiterate, take two, add an order of impulse draw your deck.

How to become an Xpert Show

Once we have obtained a finite yet sufficiently large quantity of mana, we simply pay X into a burn spell and kill everyone. In order of efficiency:

Comet Storm (kill everyone else)

Jaya's Immolating Inferno (kill 3 opponents)

Devil's Play (kill one opponent, then flashback later to kill another opponent)

Electrodominance (kill one opponent)

Banefire (kill one opponent)

Fault Line (kill everyone including yourself and Neheb)

Earthquake (kill everyone including yourself and Neheb)

Rolling Earthquake (kill everyone including yourself and Neheb)

Pyrohemia (kill everyone including yourself and Neheb)

There are a couple of other cards that allow us to dump a huge mana pool to draw a huge pile of cards and dig for the above finishers:

It's worth talking about the one cheese card in the deck as well, Aggravated Assault . This card can easily kill players with zero blockers, but its primary function works as an effect similar to Omniscience . As an example: With 10 life lost by opponents, we can go to postcombat main, get 10 mana from Neheb, activate Aggravated Assault, spend the 5 floating mana to cast some pointless spell , then move through phases again to get 10 more mana. Rinse and repeat until your whole hand is dumped. (Notably, with Syr Carah, the Bold in play, this kills everyone. Very unlikely game state but it's happened once.)

Two Times the Fun Show

Given that 4-10 mana is a more reasonable plan off Neheb than 20-40, we often need a better plan than X=40 to hit lethal burn damage. A high density of copy effects allows us to fork the single-target burn spells and get more bang for our buck:

Bonus Round Bonus Round is the stormiest card in this deck. After a couple copies of B.R. go off, we can easily kill everyone else by chaining through spells like Fiery Confluence and Price of Progress .

Another noteworthy card here is the power recursion card Past in Flames , which gives us another route to double up on damage effects simply by casting spells twice.

And the damage-doubling enchantments in red do wonders for us, as they can double up Neheb's combat damage to 8, then proceed to further double the burn from the following spells in postcombat, effectively quadrupling our damage output:

Okay, so our deck is based around casting multiple instants and sorceries in a turn and generating massive quantities of mana. That says to me that we need to draw cards. LOTS of cards. We've gotta hit land drops and replace spent instant/sorcery spells and probably control the game well enough to recast Neheb a couple of times, since he tends to trade his flaming spear for a plow a lot. Card draw is not generally a strength of mono-red, but we're gonna compensate for that weakness as much as possible:

Fervent Mastery Most decks would rather just run Gamble , and to be fair that card would be okay here as well. But three Gambles stapled together work great in this deck, especially since we can just grab a Past in Flames and flash back discards.

Birgi, God of Storytelling   BOTH sides of Birgi work great in this deck, but Harnfel, Horn of Bounty goes nuts on comboey turns, since we can throw away dead cards to keep digging.

Wandering Archaic   A fun creature but we play it for its back face, Traverse the Outlands.

Apex of Power Apex is generally a crazy spell to even think about resolving, but it's a pretty reasonable shot in this deck.

And I consider recursion to be an important source of card advantage as well, especially in a spellslinger deck. Using the same sorcery twice is just as good as drawing a second copy of it.

We've got plenty of burn spells to kill off creatures, so the deck only runs a couple extra boardwipes. Many of our burn spells can be repurposed to kill creatures anyway; nobody would call Earthquake a bad Wrath effect. Our notable spells designed to clear super-scary aggro are:

Blasphemous Act

Conversely, we're focused much harder on dealing with noncreature threats, since the decks that can fight back against our strategy are usually control and stax oriented. Many of our tools are overcosted, but this deck can often afford to waste 5 mana on an Introduction to Annihilation that removes a problematic piece of stax. Our biggest threats are usually anti-spellcasting and damage prevention effects, and of course the ever-threatening Counterspell .
