Introduction

Welcome initiate, are you worth enough for Hazoret the Fervent to strike you down? The God-Pharaohs return is immanent and only the worthy shall join him in his glorious afterlife!

This is my Hazoret the Fervent commander deck. Some have called this goddess underwhelming, others downright horrible. But do these allegations have any merit? Maybe. Hazoret isn't your typical commander and her abilities and requirements go against the most important effect in the format; card draw. But that doesn't mean we can't make a good deck with her.

So how does one win with a god that wants you to empty your hand?

"Eternal glory awaits you my child."

Hazoret the Fervent gives you the option to discard cards from your hand by paying . While this is Hazoret's most important ability you cannot solely rely on it to win you the game or get you down to the proper hand size to start swinging. Hazoret often finds herself compared to Purphoros, God of the Forge but it important to understand that these two gods do not rely on the same strategies to win. We are going to need other ways to bring Hazoret online. In this case, discard synergies.

Enchantments

  • Seismic Assault and Molten Vortex give you two affordable alternatives to Hazoret's activated ability. While this isn't the deck's win condition you'll have plenty of Mountain's to discard (37 to be exact). They also serve as good ways to mow down your enemy's creatures so you can get your creatures through.

Creatures

  • Bloodrage Brawler is a surprisingly efficient drop. Anger + Bloodrage Brawler gives you a 4/3 minotaur on turn 2. You won't complain if you find this card in your opening hand.
  • Jaya Ballard, Task Mage gives you a way to discard cards along with several useful abilities for killing creatures and your opponents.
  • Molten-Tail Masticore makes sure you can keep discarding cards consistently. Any creature you can't retrieve from the graveyard can be exiled for damage, and if it dies you can simply regenerate him.
  • Sparkspitter gives us angry attackers in exchange for the cards in your hand.
  • Wolf of Devil's Breach helps you discard cards and deals out damage based on those card's cmc.

Instants

  • Firestorm is the star of this deck, allowing you deal cheap damage to your opponents and dump your hand as early as turn 1.
  • Dangerous Wager is fast way to get rid of a bad hand and get Hazoret online.
  • Ignorant Bliss removes your hand from the game, allowing you to block or attack with Hazoret, then gives you your hand back at the end of the turn. If you can keep recurring Ignorant Bliss with Charmbreaker Devils you'll be in great shape.
  • Lightning Axe acts as cheap removal and discard. There isn't much to it and this card could easily be replaced by cards like Lightning Storm.

Artifacts

  • Key to the City helps you get Hazoret in for free and keeps your hand small.

Planeswalkers

  • Chandra Ablaze offers a way to discard cards and her ultimate allows you to play all the instants and sorceries you discarded for free.

Sorceries

With all the cards we'll be discarding its important we include cards that can retrieve those cards from our graveyard. Unfortunately our options for graveyard recursion in red are somewhat lacking.

Creatures

Sorceries

  • Past in Flames gives your instants and sorceries flashback for extra value.

Wait a minute I thought we were trying to avoid drawing cards? Well, yes but just because we aren't trying to draw cards doesn't mean we can't have some form of card advantage.

Exiling Cards

Red's gets card advantage in the form of exiling cards.

Wheel Effects

Sometimes you're going to want to rerack your hand, and what better way to do that than wheel effects?

  • Magus of the Wheel forces everyone to discard their hand and draw seven new cards, great for giving you new options and for stopping your opponents from playing that card they just can't stop smiling about.
  • Enjoy Magus of the Wheel? Then you'll love Dragon Mage. Every time you connect with this dragon you and all your opponents will discard their hands and draw seven new cards.

Now that Hazoret's ready to fight its time to pump her up. While not a full voltron build, winning with commander damage is something that Hazoret won't find very difficult.

Artifacts

  • Champion's Helm pumps and gives Hazoret hexproof. Now your invincible god is immune to all but bounce and sacrifice effects.
  • Pariah's Shield makes you invincible. Any damage dealt to you is dealt to Hazoret instead.
  • Tenza, Godo's Maul gives Hazoret trample and a nice boost.

Enchantments

  • Berserkers' Onslaught gives Hazoret double strike when she attacks, a near deadly ability when paired with any of the previously listed artifacts. On top of that it gives other attacking creatures you control double strike. Berserkers' Onslaught + Insurrection will end the game in a hurry.

Lands

  • Rogue's Passage is an essential land in many EDH decks because of its powerful effect that makes a creature unblockable. This is not a land you want to discard.
  • Smoldering Spires is a good way to stop an opponent's creature from blocking Hazoret. It's good but not essential so feel free to cut it from your deck.

So how exactly does Hazoret lead your team to victory if she isn't a voltron commander? The answer is attrition.

If attrition is our strategy then we absolutely must turn to Heartless Hidetsugu. Tap him again and again to raise the stakes of the game. Then all it takes is a burn spell like Firestorm to win you the game.

We've already talked about Seismic Assault and Molten Vortex. Both cards will help you lower your opponents life totals in the late game when not having lands to play isn't a problem.

What about cards that punish your opponents for working against you? Harsh Mentor will hurt anyone playing those fancy fetch lands or trying to active their creatures abilities and Flameblade Angel will make players pay in blood for attacking you.

I decided not to run Manabarbs in this deck because of the negative effects it can pose to you. Instead I'm running Obsidian Fireheart to spread blaze counters to all my enemies most vital lands.

With all the damage you'll be dealing you're going to need a way to amplify that damage. Enter Dictate of the Twin Gods and Insult / Injury. The ability to flash in Dictate of the Twin Gods means you can use this enchantment as a combat trick and kill an unsuspecting opponent. Insult / Injury is the younger brother of Dictate of the Twin Gods but equally as devastating. Better yet, combine the two cards for quadruple the damage.

If that doesn't sound like enough double damage you can rest assured, Gratuitous Violence will give you that extra extra damage you're looking for. The downside is that Gratuitous Violence doesn't work with all your burn spells, only combat damage. Still, you can't complain when Hazoret deals 20 damage to your opponent in a single hit.

Any of these effects paired with Insurrection will easily win you the game.

  • Anger gives your creatures haste when it's in the graveyard. You can either play this card to beef up your board or discard it and give your creatures haste for free.
  • Dragonmaster Outcast is an early play that can build you an army of flying dragons. It's easy to cast, getting you closer to Hazoret's activation requirements.
  • Grim Lavamancerallows you to exile some of the cards you can't get back from the graveyard like the lands you discarded to Seismic Assault and Molten Vortex.
  • War Elemental quickly grows into a crazy monster that can protect you from some of the big beaters your opponents control. If you want to cut War Elemental from the deck I would suggest replacing it with Silent Arbiter, the creature version of Crawlspace. You'll be able to block your opponent's scariest creatures with Hazoret and stall the game till you find your win conditions. Or you can just run Crawlspace instead.
  • Caged Sun ramps your mana and pumps our creatures, a staple in any mono color deck.
  • Ghirapur Orrery lets you play two lands each turn, emptying your hand for Hazoret.
  • Ruby Medallion lets you play your red cards for cheaper. Hazoret's Monument does the same thing.
  • Vandalblast is a classic artifact wrath that can easily fit in any mono red commander deck.
  • Blood Moon because screw the non red players.
  • Braid of Fire gives you an extra to play with each turn.
  • Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle for that mono red land damage.

Final Remarks

Building Hazoret was definitely not any easy task. There are so few cards that synergies with her and red is not the easiest color to work with in commander. I decided to leave out the hellbent mechanic because of how hard it is to activate it. Still I enjoyed the challenge and I'm looking forward to some of the cards Hazoret can use in Hour of Devastation.

This deck is far from finished, and that's where you come in. Please leave any suggestions in the comment section below.
