Muldrotha, the Gravethot

This is my take at the deck and im always looking into some upgrades and some ideas people may have !

Muldrotha, the Gravetide is a really complex commander and overall deck. Most of the Muldrotha, the Gravetide decks you see dont seem to have a win con and thats the power of muldrotha, the fact that you can use all your resources until you dont have barely any, but then, you cast your commander being safe and start all over again is the wincon. The gameplan is not infinite, but turns will feel really repetitive until you feel safe enough to win on the spot.
This is my own version of the deck and i do not claim that this is the best at all, but i admit that for any casual, optimized and even competitive deck, this deck is heavy to play around and has the best defences possible.

The way the deck is built:

  • Control
  • Graveyard
  • Recursion
  • Loops every turn to make people either scoop or have no chance to win and end up killing them or winning with Jace, Wielder of Mysteries with an empty library

This deck might not have the biggest number of counterspells and other big resources to handle that out, but it does have a really good amount of recursion and creatures to actually deal with those issues.

The goal is to set yourself up until you feel like you wont have much more "Juice" comming up and that's when you cast Muldrotha.

If you feel like you did not hit the jackpot while self milling or drawing, it does not really matter, because you can use Muldrotha as a defence and use the lands in the graveyard until you draw something good or actually replay stuff that died if you are able to. Once you hit the big cards, like Birthing Pod, you are on a roll no matter what.

The deck rolls on multiple engines that really get you going and slowly but surely are on the way to make people feel like they wont have any luck comming back. Cards that help you out with this are the dredge cards like

  • Life from the Loam will help you alot with the landfall gameplay, make sure you always have lands, have constant protection with cards:sylvan safekeeper, and using the dredge effect to mill yourself to have more juice with muldrotha and keep going with lands.
  • Dakmor Salvage Is a pretty good card for the dredge effect, and if you can get Gitrog and manage to abuse dakmor, it is most likely already the end for other players but they dont know already.
  • Stinkweed Imp Is a great defence against dangerous flying creatures. There is not many Flying trample creatures, so with a simple 3 mana creature, you both get a defence and big self mill option. Stinkweed imp and a sac outlet can get you on a roll.
  • Tamiyo, Collector of Tales is a great planeswalker to have and also gives the option of recursion.
  • Ashiok, Dream Render is a graveyard hate against others and self mill for you. They also cannot search their library while this is on the board.
This is the cheat sheet everyone playing this deck must know. The reason is that if you dont know all of the options you have for each CMC, you will have a hard time playing around with this deck. Why do you need a cheat sheet? You need a cheat sheet to understand what you will use Birthing Pod for, since every cmc is insane value on the game state.

Its important to know because games can never always go in your favor and win as early as possible with no chance to lose, there are other players and you need the best option to answer whats going on so that they lose all of their gas while you are building yours.

Lets start this cheat sheet with the Birthing Pod grind with 0 cmc creatures :

0 cmc creatures will get you 1 cmc creatures, those are the options :

Hedron Crab for the early self mill with lands, but not really usefull other than accelerating your win. Mistcaller is for the players that most likely tries to win with early animate dead's, reanimates, like the Worldgorger Dragon combos, or simply cheating early creatures. Mistcaller will make it so that people will have to remove that card and slowing down their gameplan by alot since if they cannot get rid of it, they most likely have no chance to win the game. Siren Stormtamer is the best graveyard protection you can have as a creature. The fact that it can self-Sacrifice to counter a triggered ability means you counter Bojuka Bog and Tormord's Crypts. Also counters the worldgorger dragon combo.

The 2 cmc drop is actually really short and most likely not worth mentionning.

Coiling Oracle and Sakura-Tribe Elder are both either Draw or ramp, and Sakura is a sacrifice you can use to abuse Dictate of Erebos.

The 3 CMC drop is really important, the best creatures of the deck to get to your win.

Eternal Witness a classic for graveyard recursion, use it to abuse instant or sorceries. Plaguecrafter is insane because if you play it every turn, you slowly form a lock and will be able to pop off when people will have emptied their resources. Reclamation Sage is a hero, enchantments and artifacts are the best win cons in commander all accross the decks and metas, this will save your life.

4 CMC creatures

Glen Elendra Archmage is one of the reasons the deck lack counter spells, this one keeps comming back. Notion Thief Anti Draw and draw. World Shaper Will fill your graveyard but also using a sac outlet to bring all the lands back from your graveyard, this is a wincon.

5 CMC Creatures, at this point, you think about winning, because this is the cheat sheet for birthing pod do not forget.

Mulldrifter this is a great option if you really lack cards at this point, but means you are not winning. The Gitrog Monster this creature is great, but far from including the complexity of a gitrog deck. This is great since there is a good amount of self sacrificing lands and dakmor salvage, while giving us extra lands. This option to me is better than Mulldrifter if i have enough lands, because its a big creature and gives us huge value. Sidisi, Undead Vizier is insane to get, because it will tutor you something most likely better than any creature in the deck, this could get the removal you need or the wincon you need. River Kelpie If you need to draw into big stuff. Shriekmaw If you have no choice to destroy something thats not black or artifact creature.

6 cmc creatures

Bane of Progress Artifact/Enchantments Boardwipe and creating a monster.

This deck will win off of abusing recursion, repetitive turns that make people do endless efforts to stop you, and you wont feel like they have done much, but they used everything they had. Once that happens you can start digging for your infinite combo to win, or grind it slowly.

Now, what are the signals that you can tell you have won.

People seem to have not many cards left, all mana tapped out, seems to be burned out, atleast a player losing their wincon or not being able. Muldrotha requires good understanding of threat assistment and who is the worst player on the table that is against you, never trust the politics, they dont want you winning. One way to figure out if you are doing well and can start digging for a win, is being able to have controlled the board state to some point where you can have muldrotha on the board and dont feel like it will be gone soon enough. This also means that since you have muldrotha on the board, you can either keep going on with recurring stuff from the graveyard, or go to the next panel : Infinite combos on a Budget.

Infinite combos in the deck are a kind of 4 horseman that i found with the release of Kaya's Ghostform, a new all star in Muldrotha since War of the Spark. This is what the combo looks like :

Phyrexian Altar + Kaya's Ghostform + Muldrotha, the Gravetide + Lotus Petal = Infinite Death triggers and Infinite Mana. In this list, there are no blood artist or zulaport cutthroat, even if there should be, i feel like zulaport is a dead card in my hand unless i have the combo.

How to abuse Phyrexian Altar + Kaya's Ghostform + Lotus Petal is with the help of Muldrotha and multiple other choices but i like using Kokusho, the Evening Star and will explain it.

Have Kokusho, the Evening Star anywhere available, meaning your hand, your second hand(Graveyard) or already on the battlefield. With atleast Muldrotha on the battlefield and the 3 other cards that could either be in graveyard or battlefield, you can work it out. Put Phyrexian Altar into play (3 generic mana unless its already there), Lotus Petal and Kaya's Ghostform in graveyard as a strict minimum. Cast Kaya's ghostform targetting Muldrotha, Cast Lotus petal and sacrifice it for any color, but black mana is better if you want to loop this combo im explaining. Sacrifice Muldrotha with phyrexian altar to give yourself another black mana and Muldrotha comes back into play. This means you have 1 black mana, 1 mana of any color (black is the optimal choice for this combo to make it faster) with a new Muldrotha. With your Brand new muldrotha, the text is fresh once again, you can rince and repeat this until you have either infinite mana, and then you can do this to the infinite doing the follow : With infinite mana of every color, Cast Kokusho, sacrifice Kokusho using any sacrifice outlet, sacrifice muldrotha while being enchanted by Kaya's Ghostform so that it comes back fresh and new text so that you can cast stuff from your graveyard again, rince and repeat always enchanting Muldrotha.

This is amazing because people often dont expect this one to happen, because why a new muldrotha would reset all of those right.. well it does. The only thing that does not work is playing without cheating a land drop for infinite land drops.

There are plenty of combos like this available as long as you atleast have either the 4 card combo. I'll give some quick ones without having to explain why :

4 card combo + Essence Warden = Infinite ETB/Life gain.

4 card combo + Coiling Oracle = Infinite "Draw" or land drop all the lands and cast Jace, Wielder of Mysteries to win from a kind of lab maniac.

4 card combo + Eternal Witness = Infinite whatever you want at this point...

4 card combo + Walking Ballista = Infinite Ping

4 card combo + Sidisi, Undead Vizier = Infinite Tutor

90% of the creatures can actually do something with this combo. Of course it is more cards than the LED combos, but its on a budget, and nobody see's it comming. The only reason i do not have LED is for the money it costs.

The tutors are what people should fear the most in this deck, because this deck has the answer to everything, pretty much...

What is available to us : For the creatures we only have Sidisi, Undead Vizier that can exploit a creature to tutor. For the Instants we have : Entomb Intuition This is the best one for sure. Instant speed with a guaranted card into hand, and this gives us the 3 cards we need for the 4 horseman combo that i made/found for this deck, finding Phyrexian Altar + Kaya's Ghostform + Lotus Petal. What could slow us down here is if the player choses that we keep Kaya's ghostform in hand instead of one of the two artifacts, because it will mean that we will need two turns to actually get the combo going. Mausoleum Secrets is nice and most of the time we only want to get Demonic Tutor so that we can get something else that we really need, but it is really helpful as Kaya's Ghostform is only 1 mana and is both protection and a combo card. Only 1 creature neededs in grave for mausoleum secrets to be effective.

For sorceries, we have : Buried Alive searching up for 3 creatures, and this is a really hard spell to cast when you begin playing the deck, because the creatures give you so many defensive options and only few win cons. In my opinion, Defensive is always the best choice. I often get Spore Frog // Glen Elendra Archmage // Reclamation Sage Ravenous Chupacabra or Plaguecrafter as my defensive options. With alot of mana, Fauna Shaman + Stinkweed Imp + Sidisi, Undead Vizier can win you the game, simply manage to cast fauna shaman, discard a creature and get something that draws like muldrifter, dredge stinkweed in your hand and then you shit cards in the grave and in your hand. Pulling off something like this requires you to have the advantage.

Next for the sorcery tutors, we have a classic Demonic Tutor Diabolic Intent really good for sacrifice and cheap tutor.

Tutor that i did not mention : Crop Rotation I did not mention it because it is not part of a wincon, but more as one of the best/safest plan we can have. Sacrifice a land for synergy with gitrog, get Maze of ith or Command Beacon, and you're on a roll for a long time. There is protection every where in this deck, you only need to be creative.
