Old school Extended challenge!!

So after some deliberations and playtesting I think I'm ready to set this off. This is using the pre-2010 extended model. All sets from Shards of Alara to now and m10-m15 are legal. Will do this like the other extended challenge. Everyone choose their own archetype, first 7 to join in. Only thing is sideboard is allowed and highly encouraged.

The following cards are banned from this challenge:

-Ponder

-Preordain

-Mental Misstep

-Jace, the Mind Sculptor

-Stoneforge Mystic

-Deathrite Shaman

-Bloodbraid Elf

-Treasure Cruise

My archetype is going to be RUG Splinter Twin. And with that I say good luck!

As a sidenote, ignore the sideboard. The deck happened to be built already and followed your rules about M10 till now. So like i said, just ignore it.

I'm gonna take a little more time with these to write up some match summaries, so it might take me a day or so to get it all done between getting my friend on for the matches and me sucking at typing, but without further ado, the brackets: (generated here)

Jund Titans vs RUG Twin

BW Tokens vs Esper Control

Dimir Control vs Chromatic Goodstuff

Infect vs Red Deck Wins

All I can say about these brackets is damn, these look to be some killer matches!!! Should at least have game one down soon. Stay posted!

November 11, 2014 12:56 a.m.

First match - This Shard of Alara will prevail... vs Old School Extended: Exarch Twin

Twin takes the match 2-0

I won the dice roll and kept a hand of 2 Scalding Tarn, Breeding Pool, 2 Deceiver Exarch, Mana Leak, and a Dig Through Time. Turn one played a Tarn, passed. My friend playing Jund Titans kept a 7 card hand (forgot to get it from him) and opened with an Overgrown Tomb, paying two life and following up with a Thoughtseize, taking Dig Through Time.

I cracked the fetch (Twin:19) to find Steam Vents, and to my relief I topdeck another Dig. Play another Tarn and pass. On his turn he plays a Bloodstained Mire and cracks it to find a swamp (Jund:15) and casts Farseek which I respond to by cracking the tarn to find a mountain (Twin:18) and casting Mana Leak - I don't want him getting ahead of me in mana.

Turn 3 I topdeck Faithless Looting and tap my mountain to cast it, seeing and binning two islands, leaving a healthy 7 cards in the yard for Dig Through Time. I pay 2 life (Twin:16) to play Breeding Pool untapped and passed. The titan player casts Rampant Growth on their turn and puts a forest into play, then plays Raging Ravine tapped. At the end of his turn I cast Dig Through Time, leaving a lone Mana Leak in my graveyard, seeing 4 lands, Snapcaster Mage, Izzet Charm, and Mana Leak. I take the charm and a Misty Rainforest.

Turn 4 I draw Mana Leak, play the Misty Rainforest and pass. On his turn he plays a Blood Crypt tapped and casts a Lightning Bolt (Twin:13) and passes. At the end of his turn I cast Deceiver Exarch and untap one of the land i used to cast it, crack Misty for an Island (Twin:12) and cast Izzet Charm, drawing and discarding 2 lands.

On my turn I draw another Scalding Tarn, play it, and swing with Deceiver (Jund:14). On his turn he casts another Bolt (Twin:9) and passes, I crack the tarn (Twin:8) and cast the 2nd Deceiver Exarch.

Next I draw Desolate Lighthouse, play it, and swing with my Deceiver Duo (Jund:12). On his turn he misses land drop number 6 and casts Liliana of the Veil, which is met with a Mana Leak.

On my turn I draw a Lightning Bolt, swing (Jund:10) and pass. On his turn he plays a Copperline Gorge tapped and passes, I bolt him (Jund: 7).

Next turn I draw a Dig Through Time and cast it, exiling everything but a bolt, grabbing a Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip and a Twisted Image. I cast the image on one of the exarchs, and my friend made a game costing error by letting it resolve. I drew Batterskull and attacked, he Abrupt Decays my 4/1 Exarch and goes to 6. On his turn he plays Garruk Wildspeaker making a token and casts a Thoughtseize, taking Batterskull (Jund:4).

Next turn I draw an Izzet Charm, drawing a land and Splinter Twin, discarding the land and the Huntmaster for a timely assembly of the combo we all love to hate. (Game One: Twin)

Game two I side in the Huntmasters, a Dispel and a Spellskite for 2 Faithless Looting, Twisted Image, and Grim Lavamancer.

My first hand got mulliganed due to not wanting to lose Batterskull to an early Thoughtseize (Jund:16) and go to 6, 4 lands, Spellskite and a Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip.

Fred opens with a Tomb into a Seize, taking my Spellskite (in my head at this point: mother fucking mother fucker!). (Jund:16) On my turn I draw a Gitaxian Probe and cast it for 2 life (Twin:18), seeing Wurmcoil Engine, Rampant Growth, Wooded Foothills, Garruk Wildspeaker, and Terminate and drawing a Lightning Bolt. I play a mountain and pass.

On his turn Fred plays the fetch and I cast Lightning Bolt on him at the end of his turn (Jund:13). On my turn I draw a Deceiver, play a Breeding Pool tapped and pass. At the end of my turn he fetches a tapped Blood Crypt (Jund:12)

On his turn he stumbles on his land drop and cast Rampant Growth to find a mountain and passes. On my turn I draw another Deceiver Exarch, play a Sulfur Falls and pass.

On his turn he casts a Thoughtseize which I respond to by casting one of the Exarchs, targeting his Crypt to be tapped. In response, he casts Terminate on the Exarch, then takes the other Exarch from my hand (Jund:10). On my turn I draw Batterskull and fetch an island (Twin:17) and cast Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip (twin:17).

On his turn he stumbles on mana yet again and casts Liliana of the Veil and -2's to try to save time, and I sac the wolf token. On my turn I topdeck a Steam Vents, attack Lili with the Huntmaster and destroy her, then pay 2 life for the Vents and cast Batterskull (Twin:15).

On his turn he desperately casts a topdecked Rampant Growth to try to catch up, pulling a forest. On my turn I draw Mana Leak and attack for 6 (Jund 4, Twin 19).

On his turn Huntmaster transforms into Ravager of the Fells  Flip dealing 2 damage to him (Jund:2). He casts Garruk Wildspeaker which is met with a Mana Leak and a concession.

So an unfortunate loss due to mana screw there! But I have to hand it to Jund, the disruption package is stellar!!! I had some difficulty pulling through it game one, and the mental anguish of losing your precious Spellskite :(. The wrath of the Jund Titans was surely felt!

November 11, 2014 5:57 p.m.

I wasn't playing your deck TheGamer and forgot to get him to tell me exactly what he sided - probably the Dismember and Inquisition of Kozilek I would imagine.

Ok game two!!! Fred B/W Tokens | Extended Challenge vs. Me Extended Esper Excellence

Fred takes it with BW tokens 2-0! This time I managed to remember to get more info from Fred. Fred wins the rolls and keeps a hand of Marsh Flats, 2 Lingering Souls, Intangible Virtue, Elspeth, Knight-Errant, Raise the Alarm, and a Swamp. I mulled a one-lander and kept a hand of Polluted Delta, Esper Charm, Hallowed Fountain, Vapor Snag, Watery Grave and Liliana of the Veil.

Fred opens with the Marsh Flats. I draw a land and play the Delta and pass. Fred fetches a tapped Godless Shrine (Tokens:19)

Turn two Fred plays a Swamp and passes. I play a Godless Shrine tapped, end of turn Fred casts Raise the Alarm.

Turn 3 Fred plays a Plains and casts Intangible Virtue. Fred attacks with both soldiers, I Vapor Snag one of them (Esper:18, Tokens:18). On my turn, I play a Plains and cast Liliana of the Veil hoping he doesn't have a Lingering Souls to discard. I +1 Lili and sure enough he bins a Souls, I discard a Watery Grave and pass.

Next turn Fred attacks Lili bringing her to 2 loyalty and casts the other Lingering Souls in his hand. On my turn I +1 Lili, ditching a land (forgot what he ditched) then Esper Charm him, he discards a Tidehollow Sculler and a Zealous Persecution.

Next Fred tops an Arid Mesa (Tokens:17), cracks it for a plains and casts Elspeth, Knight-Errant, gives his soldier +3/+3, swings it at Lili and the Spirits at me (Esper: 14). I crack a fetch for a Hallowed Fountain tapped (Esper:13). My turn, I tap out to cast Wrath of God.

On his turn he casts an Inquisition of Kozilek and sees only a land and Jace, Architect of Thought. He makes a Soldier with Elspeth and flashes back a Lingering Souls. On my turn I draw a Snapcaster Mage, play Jace and -2 him..starting to feel the heat. I end up taking Utter End, and putting a Sorin Markov and an Inquisition of Kozilek on the bottom.

Next turn he swings on Jace and me (Esper:11), makes a soldier and passes. I crack a fetch (Esper:10) On my turn I draw Elspeth, Sun's Champion and cast Utter End on Elspeth. I need to draw a miracle to get out of this!

Next turn he swings me down to 3 and casts Brimaz. I topdeck a Sorin Markov, and stuck on 5 lands, concede.

For game two I sided in Drown in Sorrow, Sphinx's Revelation, a Nevermore, the Mana Leaks and the Detention Spheres for Linvala, the Lilis, the Etherwrought Page and a Thoughtseize. Fred sided out 3 Path to Exile and 2 Zealous Persecution for 3 Mirran Crusader and 2 Sin Collector.

Unfortunately I accidentally deleted most of what happened game two including my opnening hand but Fred told me he kept a curvy hand of Thoughtseize, Tidehollow Sculler, Midnight Haunting, Swamp, and Godless Shrine. I remember mulling to 5 trying to get lands as well. Both decks got stuck on 2 lands for several turns and Fred topdecked 2 Tidehollow Sculler in a row and ripped my hand apart. I didn't draw into any removal for them and was overwhelmed by Sculler beats.

Both players gave it a great shot but the versatile power of BW Token swarms proved to be too much to control!

Next round: Me Infect - Uber Extended Challenge! vs. Fred Bash 'n Burn Extended-er. Red Deck Wins the match 2-0!

This match sadly ended short - mana problems caused me to mulligan several times, and both of Fred's hands started with mountain, Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear, and burn spells. Game one I had a couple Blight Mamba but only 1 Vines of Vastwood and could never swing in safely before I got overrun by a curve of Goblin Guide, Monastery Swiftspear + Burst Lightning, Goblin Rabblemaster, and a few topdecked burn spells. Game two I managed to get an early Plague Stinger and managed to get 8 damage in before he managed to Bolt it and I had burned all my protection spells, and was a mana short of saving it with a pump. After that I got whittled down after running out of gas.

Red Deck Wins lives up to its name! Final match of the first round coming soon!

November 12, 2014 12:08 a.m.

Round one is over!!! Me piloting Dimir Super-Extended takes the match against Fred piloting Old school Extended challenge!! !!

I keep a solid opener of Polluted Delta, Dig Through Time, Liliana of the Veil, Jace Beleren, Watery Grave, Go for the Throat, and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. Fred mulls to 6 and keeps a risky hand of 2 Rakdos's Return, a Sphinx's Revelation, and 3 lands.

I won the roll and open with a tapped Watery Grave. Fred opens with Misty Rainforest and passes.

On my turn I play a Polluted Delta and pass. Fred fetches a Watery Grave (5c:19) tapped. On his turn he plays a Temple Garden tapped and passes. I fetch a tapped Watery Grave (Dimir:19)

On my turn I play Urborg and tap out for Liliana of the Veil and +1 her, I bin a Go for the Throat and he bins a Rakdos's Return. On his turn he plays a Stomping Ground tapped and passes.

On my turn I play Jace Beleren and +2 him, then +1 Liliana, I bin an Inquisition of Kozilek while he ditches another Return. On his turn he plays a Breeding Pool tapped and casts Sylvan Caryatid.

On my turn I draw, +2 Jace and +1 Liliana, discarding a Mana Leak, he ditches a Chromanticore. On his turn he shocks himself for a Temple Garden (5c:17) and attempts to cast Child of Alara which is met with a Mana Leak. He then taps the Sylvan for Noble Hierarch and passes.

On my turn I +2 Jace, play a Verdant Catacombs, crack it to find a Watery Grave (Dimir: 16) and cast Mutilate wiping out his mana dorks, then -6 Liliana and blow up two of his lands. His topdeck shows him an uncastable Progenitus and next turn I hit him with a big Haunting Echoes, and he concedes before getting milled for 20 by Jace.

Game two I didn't get much written up about but it went to Chromatic Goodstuff in a landslide. I made a terrible boarding decision thinking I'd be ok without Go for the Throat and tapped out for an Ashiok turn 3 and ended up staring down a t4 bestowed Rattleclaw Mystic with no way to remove it in sight and got beat down hard. The threat of a Chromanticore is definitely not to be taken lightly.

Game 3 I ended up bring in Ashiok and Dissipate swapping out Jace, Despise, and a Haunting Echoes. I kept a hand of Thoughtseize, Dig Through Time, Dissipate, Go for the Throat, and lands. Fred keeps a hand of double Noble Hierarch, a Sylvan Caryatid, Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and lands.

I open with a swamp into a Thoughtseize (Dimir:18) taking the Sylvan. Fred plays a Temple Garden (5c:18) and casts a Noble Hierarch.

On my turn I fetch a Watery Grave (Dimir:15) and cast Go for the Throat on the dork. On his turn he plays a Blood Crypt (5c: 16) and casts a Sylvan Caryatid.

Next I play Tectonic Edge and cast Liliana of the Veil and -2 her to blow up the Sylvan. Next turn Fred plays an Overgrown Tomb tapped and casts another Noble.

Next turn I Thoughtseize (Dimir:13) a Chromanticore and +1 Lili, I dump a Dissipate and he dumps Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and gets the grave shuffle. On his turn he casts a face down Rattleclaw Mystic.

On my turn I crack a Marsh Flats for a grave (Dimir:10) and tap my 2 blue sources and Delve for a Dig Through Time, grabbing a Go for the Throat and another Liliana of the Veil. I -2 Lili, he sacs the Noble to it. On his turn he plays a tapped Godless Shrine and swings in with the morph, which eats a Go for the Throat.

Next turn I Thoughtseize an Avacyn, Angel of Hope and cast the second Liliana and +1, both of your hands are empty at this point. Fred tops a Flooded Strand, plays it and passes.

Next turn I cast an Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver and exile a Chromanticore and blow Tectonic Edge on one of his lands. With a Chromanticore coming against him next turn with Liliana backup, Fred concedes the match.

So an epic round one is over! Thanks to everyone who entered, some really interesting lists here! The semi-finals are

RUG Twin vs BW Tokens

Dimir Control vs. Red Deck Wins

November 12, 2014 7:21 p.m.

So this one was so short it's not even worth writing up - BW Tokens rapes RUG Twin!!! Both games were over by turn 6. Much tokens, many aggro. Instant speed token generation and all the anthems weakening Volcanic Fallout combined with multiple discard spells never left me with a chance. Great deckbuilding call, twas' too fair for me to fuck with.

Next semi-final is Dimir Control versus Red Deck Wins!!

November 12, 2014 7:46 p.m.

And in classic badmatchups, RDW flies through Dimir Control! Monastery Swiftspear one turn one took both games by storm with burn spell in tow. The manlands also played a huge role in the match, preventing Mutilate from being effective. You just can't pack enough Go for the Throat in a single hand.

So round two was composed of a series of ass-handings due to poor matchups. This last matchup is gonna be one for the ages. RDW is much faster and preys on the painful manabases and Thoughtseizes of this format, however BW Tokens generates a lot of card advantage and can chump block all day. Who will win? We'll find out!

November 12, 2014 8:38 p.m.

tooTimid says... #42

Whew!! Thanks reverendvile777. Good luck to whoever my opponent is in the finals.

November 12, 2014 8:40 p.m.

tooTimid says... #43

Oh! Ninja'd! Well good luck then!

November 12, 2014 8:41 p.m.

Game one goes to BW Tokens. Fred playing RDW got his first creature (Young Pyromancer) met with a Path to Exile but still took an early lead and almost took the game outright, but a timely turn 5 topdeck of Lingering Souls allowed me to block the opposing Blinkmoth Nexus and Chandra's Phoenix and put RDW on the defensive. Following that came a Tidehollow Sculler showing 2 mountains on the other side and as Brimaz, King of Oreskos, followed by a 20-point life swing next turn via Vault of the Archangel. By this point the Red Deck has run out of gas and has no way to overcome the immense lifegain, and Fred concedes the game!!! Game 2 is up next!

November 12, 2014 9:04 p.m.

And in an unfortunate finale, Bash n' Burn hit some serious hand problems and mulled to 5, only keeping a Lightning Bolt, Skullcrack, Satyr Firedancer, Chandra's Phoenix, and a lone Mountain. Sadly 4 turns in he saw 0 lands, lost the Firedancer to a Tidehollow Sculler, and just never got off the ground. So an unfortunate end for Bash n' Burn after a stellar performance in the tournament!

tooTimid's BW Tokens is the Old School Extended Champion!

I figure to make this interesting, next round's winning participant will have a showdown with this week's champion. So congrats to tooTimid and special thanks to everyone else for taking the time to enter! Some great decks were submitted and me and Fred had a lot of fun playing with them! Join me for part 2 for your chance to take on the champion!

So close... Oh well, finals is good too!

The deck's mana curve was going to be even higher, with Hero of Oxid Ridge, but I realized that I forgot Ash Zealot. Low curve is good curve, but not low enough.

November 12, 2014 10:04 p.m.

One thing that almost cost you in the early rounds was having too many colorless lands, in each of the first games I ended up with Mountain>Nexus>Mutavault draws that hedged on totally screwing me over. 3, maybe 4 manlands is doable, but more than 4 is risky with such a low mana count. But well done nonetheless! It was a force to be reckoned with for sure!
